Blue Jays Discussion: Save some runs for the other games, guys. (Jays score team record 28 runs in Friday night drubbing of Red Sox. Yes, that says 28. In one game)

They just got Ruiz last year so I’d assume they’d rather trade for Bichette over Kirk.
Ruiz isn't the kind of player that makes you stop wanting Kirk. Ruiz is performing around at starter level right now, Kirk is playing at an MVP level. Kirk's bat plays at C and DH as well. If they really were concerned, they deal Ruiz for another need.

I still think we say no, for the same reason that Vlad Guerrero and Alek Monoah are off the table. We are in a win-now mode, we need to be adding top-end talent that can help us win now - not removing it from premium position.

And before anyone says otherwise - a flash-in-the-pan, oft-injured Danny Jansen and a raw-Gabriel Moreno is not an adequate replacement for arguably the best catcher in the league.

If they want a more suitable 1 for 1 - Bo Bichette is a fantastic option. 24 years old, years of control and is a star in his own right. It would hurt to lose him but we can shuffle around a few pieces with the addition of Juan Soto to make it work.
i don't disagree but a part of me just wants to be entertained with a soto vlad duo lol.

So with ryu broken chances qre for the remainder of his contract if its insured i wonder if thr reds would do something along the lines of ryu plus for castillo and votto would love to drop kikuchi on them but we are stuck with him till he remembers how to pitch

Blue Jays: Brandon Barriera, LHP (first round)
The Florida high-school southpaw provided one of the best interview highlights of Day 1 when he told MLB Network shortly after going No. 23, “Looking at those 22 teams before me, they're going to regret this." Time will tell, of course, but the pieces are there for that to happen. Barriera shows three above-average pitches with his fastball, slider and changeup, and he isn’t afraid to go right after hitters. The Jays have had success in developing prep left-hander Ricky Tiedemann into prospect prominence and could do the same with Barriera. His competitiveness is already Major League-level.

Daniel Bard, RHP, Rockies
Bard’s third season in Colorado has been his best, as he’s posted a 2.02 ERA in 35 appearances this season. The 37-year-old has excelled of late, allowing just two earned runs over his final 21 outings before the break, pitching to a 0.81 ERA during that stretch. Bard is earning $4.4 million in 2022 and will be a free agent this winter.

Potential fits: Blue Jays, Padres, Red Sox

Anthony Bass, RHP, Marlins
The 34-year-old has been outstanding all season, posting a 1.36 ERA in 40 appearances for Miami. Bass held opponents scoreless during his final 16 outings before the break, holding hitters to a .441 OPS in 15 2/3 scoreless innings. Bass is earning $3 million this season and has a $3 million club option ($1 million buyout) for 2023, but the Marlins could capitalize on his stellar season and flip him for a younger player or two.
Potential fits: Blue Jays, Giants, White Sox

Weird they dont have the Jays as fits for Soto, Ohtani, Castillo, Bell or Robertson. If Soto, Ohtani and Castillo are all moved, i pretty much guarantee one is going to be a Jay. Probably Ohtani as Perry Minasian is the GM the Angels and he loves his former Jays, he was here when the Jays signed Gurriel, Castillo, Kirk and Moreno. He hired Brian Parker who fought to draft Bichette. Also here when the Jays drafted Biggio, Jansen, Mayza, Pearson, Saucedo, Romano and others.

Morosi actually posted this hypothetical trade on MLB network.

Which begs the question, who would we rather acquire: Ohtani or Soto?

Soto is younger with more years of control. Ohtani is an all-world pitcher and hitter but hes 28 with only 1.5 years of control before he hits FA.

If the prices are the same it would be hard to say no to Soto as you get him for an extra year but i think i might go with Ohtani. He fills 2 HUGE needs for the price of 1. He would be the lefty bat we need and have the 2nd best wRC+ on the team only behind Kirk and the 2nd best pitching WAR behind Gausman. To add a MVP bat and a Cy Young caliber arm in the same trade would be nuts.

Soto: 2.6 fWAR
Castillo: 2.1 fWAR
Total: 4.7 fWAR

Ohtani batting: 1.8 fWAR
Ohtani hitting: 2.9 fWAR
Total: 4.7 fWAR

Ohtani is as good as Soto and Castillo combined.

And with Ohtani's age and being so humble, he may not need a huge contract to re-sign him.

Decent savings here. And I like the prospect.

Looks like we will need another good OFer. Won’t be able to count on Springer. Oft injured, load mgmt etc. Any thoughts on a solid OF on the trade market? Not named Sosa. No way we can rely on Zimmer!

Bryan Reynolds of Pittsburgh could potentially be available and he's a good player.

Micheal Conforto could also be a option for an outfielder addition.

I figured fulharty would be a much cheaper sign than that. Don’t understand the early draft on a pure reliever that didn’t sign cheap and is a low 90’s pitcher. Hard to question their drafting but this one seems odd to me

I have a crazy trade proposal, but bear with me.

Bichette (24) + throw-in for Reynolds (27) + Bednar (27) + Prospect/Player

Rationale for Toronto:

We need a good lefty bat and late-inning bullpen help.

Reynolds is a power-hitting, switch-hitter who can play center field (although his defense this year has declined). He's good for at least 3WAR per year and put up 6WAR last season. He's only 27 so in the prime of his career, and still has 4 years of team control left.

Bednar is one of the best closers in baseball right now. He has strikeout stuff and could spell Jordan Romano when he needs rest. He's 27, not arb eligible until 2024, and has 5 years of team control remaining.

Bichette is a great young offensive player, but he's also not very good defensively. We could slot Espinal in at shortstop and actually improve from a defensive standpoint. Espinal will not replace his offensive potential, but he's shown he can contribute at least league average offense if not better, and whatever offense we lose at short we gain from Reynolds.

The third piece imo is necessary to even out value but I'm not sure which direction to go. We could target a prospect with potential like Ji-hwan Bae or Anthony Solometo, a young post-hype starter like Mitch Keller, or veteran starter like Jose Quintana to give us rotation depth (granted, Quintana is more smoke and mirrors than stuff now).

Acquiring Reynolds allows us to possibly move one of Teo or Gurriel for a top starter with Springer moving to RF and Reynolds to CF.

The Toronto throw-in could be any prospect type we have in excess and don't really need or a player really far away.

Rationale for Pittsburgh:

Bo is an all-star caliber, former 5WAR player, who fits Pittsburgh's rebuild timeline perfectly at only 24 years of age.

Their front office would know him well since they used to be ours. He has 4 years of team control left, but is arb eligible in 2023.

Pitt could probably get a bunch of prospects for these veterans but Bo is already established and still young with lower risk. He's arguably the best player they could get in a trade, and they're able to get him for two veterans who won't be part of their rebuild anyway.
