I was looking at the rookie scoring at NHL.com, and I noticed that Peter Sarno, who got his first NHL goal last night, isn't on it. But as far as I can tell, he's a rookie. Here's the rule:

To be eligible for the award, a player cannot have played more than 25 games in any single preceding season nor in six or more games in each of any two preceding seasons in any major professional league. The player must not be older than 26 years before September 15 of the season in which he is eligible.

He's 23 years old, and has played 3 seasons in the AHL, and one in Finland. But obviously, players can play in both of those leagues and still be considered a rookie. So what am I missing?

is it though? I mean surely there are guys who play 6+ games 2 years in the row in the AHL and still qualify...or am I wrong? (ie does the AHL count?)

How is that the answer? Are you ensinuating that Finland and the AHL are major professional leagues? The NHL sure doesn't think so.

The Sedin's played 3 years in the SEL and were Calder eligible. The NHL only views one league as a major league, the NHL. Nothing in Europe counts. The only thing keeping Zidlicky ineligible is he is a 1/2 year too old. Not the fact that he played atleast 7 years in European elite leagues.

Yeah, but the WHA isn't currently in existence. The reason why the NHL made that statement about 'major' leagues was to include the WHA. But since they haven't been around for a while, I think it's safe to say the NHL is the only 'major' league in their mind.
