Aqueduct (New York):
  • Linda Rice is 10 7-2-0 the past two days at Aqueduct. She had a 4-win day yesterday (Jan. 2). She specializes in claimers.
Financials:
  • $11.2 billion bet on U.S. racing in 2024. That mark is down $400 million from 2023.
  • The average purse distribution per race set an industry record at $40,593.

Santa Anita (California):
  • BARNES is named after Jimmy Barnes, Bob Baffert's longtime assistant and cost $3.2 million. Won his debut. The San Vincente is not an official Kentucky Derby prep but Baffert has tried this route in the past.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • An Iowa-bred aptly named Cyclone State won the Kentucky Derby prep at Aqueduct (NY). Three wins in a row for the victor.

Santa Anita (California):
  • BARNES opened it up with a stretch drive that decimated the competition. He was sent off the co-even money favorite. No match. Bon Baffert finished 2-2 with ROMANESQUE, a $675,000 purchase, placing at 7-to-1. A healthy $14 exacta with Baffert's horses.
  • Bob Baffert's barn put on a show today at Santa Anita. He won all four races in which he entered and finished 1-2 twice.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 8: Cyclone State (Luis Rivera. Jr./Chad Summers) won the $150,000 Jerome Stakes and with it earned 10 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. He may go to Saudi Arabia next time out. The breeder is from Iowa, hence the name.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: Exceeded $13 million which I believe was the industry leader in North America today.
  • Rainbow Six: Mandatory payout on Sunday and the total could reach $3,000,000.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 9: Coal Battle (Juan Vargas/Lonnie Briley) won the $250,000 Smarty Jones Stakes and with it earned 10 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. The popular Arkansas route to Kentucky includes this first of four Derby preps (also the Southwest, the Rebel and the Arkansas Derby). Coal Battle has won at smaller tracks in Louisiana and Oklahoma but now is among the early big players for the Run for the Roses after a comfortable victory today.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Exceeded $11 million.
  • Juan Hernandez rode five winners including three times for Bob Baffert. His successful day finished 9 5-2-1.
  • Bob Baffert entered four races and won each. In two of the races, he finished 1-2. In total, he finished 7 4-2-0.
  • Race 5: Barnes (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the Grade 2 $200,000 San Vicente Stakes defeating a small field which included stable-mate and runner-up Romanesque (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) who was sent off 7-to-1. Barnes, names for Baffert's assistant Jimmy Barnes, cost $3.2 million and is now 2-for-2. Baffert has won this race 14 times.

  • Race 9: Richi (Kazushi Kimura/Bob Baffert) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Las Flores Stakes. Richi is a multiple-graded stakes winner in his home country of Chile. He won off a long layoff following his U.S. debut in June 2024.

The finalists for the Eclipse Awards are now confirmed. Horse of the Year will be announced that night, January 23.

Jockey of the Year should be easy as Flavien Prat set incredible totals. Irad Ortiz, Jr., winner five of the past six years, and Tyler Gaffalione, a prior winner for Apprentice of the Year, were also nominated. Good for Gaffalione for reaching this level, the kid is a star as I said from his earliest days.

Trainer of the Year, no surprises with Chad Brown, Brad Cox and Kenny McPeek honored. Cox remains my pick but the voters seem to be looking elsewhere.

Distressing photos from Southern California including one image of the catastrophic fires near Santa Anita. Right now, no cancellations to that track's cards. Good health and safety to all.

Santa Anita has been having a successful meet to date.

Oaklawn is in the center of a southernly snowstorm with potential of eight inches this weekend at Hot Springs, AR. That will be monitored for potential cancellations.

UPDATE: Oaklawn canceled all three cards this weekend.

Charles Town (WV) and Turfway (KY) announced cancellations for tonight.

The lawsuit between Stronach daughter and father a few years ago had the dooming message if her side controlled real estate, racing could be in peril. Since that side was awarded land rights owned by the conglomerate, Golden Gate in California and eventually Laurel in Maryland will have ceased operations with land to be redeveloped by the Group.

Stronach maintains Santa Anita and Gulfstream. While southern Cali racing oftentimes is unstable, Florida seems secure. But the past 48 hours involving the decoupling issue, very important in Florida issue, has been making headlines. If Stronach, as the owner of Gulf, is able to separate the requirements of parimutuel facility on the same land as a casino in order to operate the latter, then that sends a foreboding message to the unthinkable. Denials are being offered now. The area once boasted Hialeah and Calder in addition to other shuttered tracks. Gulf's casino and entertainment operations could be the desired route with expansion that includes hotel space. Still far from anything concrete but nothing should be surprising anymore.

Turf Paradise hosted the NTL title -- a league based on teams with profiled public individuals and private investors representing different cities. More than $3 million was bet that day, the highest in 25 or more years at the Phoenix facility. Julius Erving represented the Philadelphia team.

Snowing in New Mexico. Doesn't appear to be sticking but Sunland is Snowland today.

Santa Anita canceled Friday's (Jan. 10) card and moved it to Thursday (Jan. 16).
