Sam Girard enters player assistance program

translated article from yesterday

Defender Samuel Girard has left the Colorado Avalanche for an indefinite period due to a health problem, a member of his entourage told TVA Nouvelles.

The Robervalois missed a first match on November 13. He returned to the game for the next two, collecting a goal and two assists. He has not played since last Saturday, and thus missed two other games.

It appears Girard had been experiencing recurring headaches for some time. He is currently being evaluated in a specialized clinic in the United States. For the moment, too early to say that it is a concussion or another problem.

The same source indicated that Girard's absence for an indefinite period of time is strictly related to sport and that he may have returned to the game too soon.

His coach Jared Bednar cited personal reasons to explain this withdrawal on Wednesday.

“We are in the unknown, so it’s certainly worrying,” admitted Samuel’s uncle, Roger Boutin, who was just going to play his match in a recreational league for adults.

In Roberval, people want the young 25-year-old defender to recover quickly.

“He’s the only representative from Lac-Saint-Jean in the National League! We hope to see him back on the ice soon!” confided one man.

“I feel sorry for him,” added another. It must be hard for parents.”

Samuel's parents declined our interview request.

Some degens already going off on Twitter, classic.

Hope Sam finds help for his headaches and it's nothing more than stress induced ones.

E: Apparently the headaches thing was just some bullshit.

If it's a medical issue it seems weird he wouldn't go on LTIR.

Edit : explanation was posted simultaneously and makes sense. Seems like the 'headaches' thing wasn't correct.

Headaches could certainly by alcohol withdrawal. Could have tried cold turkey, and not responded well.

Wish him the best. Hope he gets the help he needs.

All the respect in the world to a guy who can come out, admit a problem and seek out help for the betterment of himself and his family. I wish him all the best and it would be really nice if people could give him and his family the privacy and utmost respect in what will be the most important period of his and his loved ones life's I’m sure. He’s a hero in my books

The headaches thing was weird at first, recalling celebs entering rehab for “exhaustion”. Glad he’s honest. In this day and age substance abuse is a serious issue and good on him for taking a step to get better. Hopefully one day the stigma of substance abuse will disappear so more people can be open about getting help. It really doesn’t discriminate between race, sex, class, etc. Best of luck to him

Good luck to him. I’ve suffered from my own anxiety issues for the best part of the last 15 years that I’ve only recently found the strength to tackle.

We’re in a better place than we were even a few years ago, but some people still have a really poor understanding of mental health and addiction. Some people don’t even try to understand it, and can’t grasp the reality that it’s not just an excuse.

I get the sense overlapping issues are at play
old injuries=chronic pain
addiction
anxiety

poor guy would have been in a tough spot if that were/is the case

How so? Headaches are a very common symptom of withdrawal...

If it was correct it was only a small part of the story.

Vancouver has a player on LTIR in Tucker Poolman with headache/migraine issues, hence it seemed odd that 'headaches' would lead by themselves to going into the assistance program instead of just to LTIR. Then the situation was clarified.
