It's amazing that he would go before Connor Brown. If McDavid and the core would rather have a country club than win then don't be surprised if we don't win. Foegele couldn't get dealt in the offseason because he was buds with the core, now worthless Brown stays over Gagner who bleeds Oiler blue. I've never been the biggest Gagner fan and I have been tough on him on here more often than not. That said this is wrong, Gagner deserves better than this. It's amazing how this is twice that Holland shits on Gagner and casts him away, yet he says that you can't squeeze GM's etc. I guess you just pick and choose who you shit on while you sit there with a smile telling stories about Detroit. Hopefully if he is traded this time it will be better for us than the last trade that Holland made involving him...

I guess that means the trade is coming and they need a roster spot. I doubt Gagner gets picked up. Probably just goes to the minors.

And I thought Gagner had a strong game the other night.

This Brown stuff is silly, isn't it?

Very disappointing news...gags is a great bottom 6 vet who will actually contribute on the score board . This whole brown disaster has spiraled out of control. Unless he knocks it out of the park in the playoffs...its going to be a huge waste of cap space next year. This buddy business is getting old

I like Gagner as much as the next guy. But it’s not exactly like he’s done much in his last handful of games

0 points and -3 in his last 7 games.

This is as simple as Brown kills penalties and Gagner doesn’t.
Brown fills a niche, Gagner's more or less a soft tertiary scoring option on the bottom line. We'll see who they bring in through trade. If it's an offensive player, it will make all sorts of sense.

Brown obviously would have been my first choice. The concern I’ve had about Gagner this year though has been his durability. He’s been physically pounded in pretty much every game he’s played in this year and I think that’s been a contributing factor to him being out of the lineup so much. Maybe the team doesn’t see him being able to contribute going forward.

This and his lack of playoff experience doesn’t move the needle this time of year.

We disagree quite a bit but we agree on this.

The other part of this...nobody is claiming Gagner.

I suspect that the issue is the pk. Brown is on the Oilers second unit and Gagner does not pk. Right now Gagner is a 4th line/pb forward and if you have that role and don't pk its going to be tough.

That's certainly part of it. Sorry if I mentioned it before, but I really wonder where Gagner's health is at? I sincerely hope he clears.

I would be shocked if he did not clear. Teams know where Gagner is in his career path. He obviously wants to be part of the Oiler organization and I think they are happy to have him. But the first priority is to win. And it sounds like the plan is to add a couple of forwards who can help more than Gagner can right now. Waiving Gagner will open up some additional cap space which could allow them to do this without having to move someone out.

Totally fair, but until he clears I'll be concerned. I actually agree with the flexibility it provides, it's just tough it's Gagner.

Let's also put to rest the "fact" that Brown is somehow some kind of elite penalty killer. He's not.

Here's the best penalty killing forwards on the Oilers in net G/60 on the PK this season:

#1 Foegele 1.08 GF/60 4.32 GA/60 Net -3.24
#2 McLeod 0.73 GF/60 5.11 GA/60 Net -4.38
#3 Draisaitl 2.93 GF/60 7.33 GA/60 Net -4.40
#4 Ryan 1.85 GF/60 8.02 GA/60 Net -6.17
#5 Brown 0.00 GF/60 6.93 GA/60 Net -6.93
#6 RNH 1.66 GF/60 8.83 GA/60 Net -7.17
#7 Janmark 0.00 GF/60 7.22 GA/60 Net -7.22

So Brown is actually the 5th best penalty killer in terms of net on-ice goals differential... and even there RNH and Janmark are only slightly worse than him.

He's not some sort of savant on the PK.

Add that to the fact that he's f***ing abysmal at 5v5...

0.99 GF/60 and 1.86 GA/60 when he's on the ice... dead last numbers on the team,

He brings nothing in other skills/intangibles either as he's not physical and isn't a faceoff guy.

He plays such a soft perimeter game that he's also dead last on the team among forwards in penalties drawn at 0.22/60 at 5v5 and also 2nd worst in hits/60 among forwards with 2.08 hits/60 at 5v5.

Guy has been a complete dud so far and the only thing keeping him on the team is his relationship with Jackson/McDavid and that he's a "nice guy".

Brown wouldn't even be playing on a Chicago or San Jose roster as they'd put a younger prospect in there instead of a 30 year old with zero upside..

31 other teams would have him waived to the AHL as he's a net negative on the ice.

I actually hope this post ages poorly and Brown turns into an actual decent penalty killer and ends up being a positive on the ice at 5v5 instead of the all-around total negative on the ice that he is now.

Selfishly I want him to clear so he can hopefully join the Oilers in the playoffs. Even if he doesn't play, he deserves to be with the team for a run. Then he can always be ready to go if needed
He was here through almost the entire DOD the man has earned the right to play at least one playoff game in oilers silks. If he gets claimed or traded it’s a damn travesty and KH or Jackson or whoever is running the show should be tarred and feathered.

Does Foegele kill a lot of penalties. I don't remember ever seeing him on the Pk. The guys at the bottom, like Janmark and RNH, are often on the ice killing penalties, hence they get scored on more often.

Stats are all about usage. Brown has been very good on the penalty kill.
