When Islanders defenseman Johnny Boychuk learned that he was coming to the Island, he wasn’t the only person to hop onto the Isles bandwagon. His brother, Sam, is the Isles’ newest fan.

You may have heard of him from one of his hilarious rants on Twitter or from his prominent brother. Whatever the case — Sam Boychuk has a great story to tell about his place in a hockey family.

Justin Weiss (J.W): Can you pinpoint one moment that describes how proud you are to have your brother, Johnny, playing in the NHL?

Sam Boychuk (S.B): I would have to say I am proud of both my brothers for what they have accomplished in their life journey. I would have to say there are two moments that I would say I am most proud of so far in his NHL career. ( 1 ) When our family officially realized Johnny made it as a full-time NHL player and was there to stay, and ( 2 ) Having the opportunity to watch his team win the Stanley Cup.

Cool article. Seems like they have a close relationship, which makes me like this:

"S.B: I know Garth and TSC are working hard behind closed doors to get something done sooner than later. I think that Johnny couldn’t have asked for a better fit than on Long Island as well I think he was exactly what the Islanders needed as well. Match made in heaven sort of speak."

His brother is right, it's a perfect fit. I expect it gets done like I did when we first got him. This guy is no Vanek and there is no way he'd join that tire fire in Edmonton.

I really hope this happens.

I'm still optimistic/hopeful it gets done but when the season started I thought it would have been done by now. I thought January would give both sides time to assess where the deal would need to fall.

I'm still hopeful but with the trade deadline coming shortly, you'd really like to see Boychuck wrapped up by now. Sam Boychuk's comments are pretty reassuring though.

From a business standpoint his agent might want to allow the market value increase above the Staal contract. JB is a much more productive player than Staal. Whoever else gets signed between now and July 1 could affect the market price.
I think we pay the price that makes him happy and that he stays. The team is quickly developing and should be a Cup contender for a number of years, the Island is a great place to live and raise a family if you make what he will make. Suburbs, city, beaches, fishing, golf, mountains 3 hours away.
I am very hopeful.

Great to hear this. It is a different vibe than all the bs and no comments during the vanek waiting period.

less than three. lower Catskills are only about 2 hours from Manhasset, where he is now.

The Boychuk Bros. are #IslesTwitter rock stars.

Hopefully #JB55 re-signs so we can enjoy the whole Boychuk family long term.

A number of the traditional big spenders just do not have the cap space to take him on. It would require some of those teams to move out other contracts to (its been done before) to accommodate him.

Most likely to sign him: NYI, DAL, FL, and ANA all clearly have the cap space in the summer of 2015 to sign him.

What amazes me sometimes is that teams in the NE corridor travel so much less than WC teams, yet it does not make that much of a difference to a player. Why? For all the family talk, these guys love being on the road and the camaraderie it brings that they only during their playing window.

Of those, Anaheim would be he most tempting from a competitive standpoint. Dallas is still a few years and a few players away from being a force in that division. It should be us and and Anaheim with the most to offer. And we are younger and really deeper, plus he knows the guys here already and likes the guys. When you go through fire together the bonding is strong.
I know I am looking for the bright spots but they are really there, not making this up thru my Islander lenses.

You call those mountains? :)

Boychuck grew up near the Canadian Rockies and was close to VT/NH/Maine when he was in Boston. I don't think the Catskills are that much of a draw...

But Hunter's got those wicked bunny slopes.

And Hunter would be about 3.5 hours from his house... The west side of Hunter has some pretty good runs if the snow is good... I haven't been there in about 20 years though. Imagine they added some new terrain now.

JMO, but if he gets to the point where he is considering offers from the other teams (i.e. doesn't re-sign with us during the season), we are in trouble. Sure its possible that he can hit FA and then return here but that usually doesn't happen. I'm sure we're offering him top dollar and he knows what he's getting here. Either he wants to come back here and will re-sign or he'll move elsewhere. It sounds like he wants to stay here but if he passes the trade deadline with no deal I'm not as confident. If he says he wants to test FA, he's as good as gone in my book.

That being said, the price should be right here and is the perfect fit for the young team we have. All the elements are there but who knows what a guy is thinking/feeling about a situation. For all we know, his wife might hate it here.

Went to hunter for 4 days in August.
Hiking at Kaaterskill Falls was awesome.
Stayed at a lodge right across the main rd from hunter ski mountain.
The town was empty and so was the lodge. Me and the wife and 4 kids had a blast
