How has he looked in his time in the NHL? I know he’s supposed to be a super skilled offensive defenseman, but has his defense been decent enough? I expected him to make the team this year, and it’s not exactly inspiring to see that he’s stuck in the AHL when looking at San Jose’s roster.

This guy has so much talent but his issue is that he refuses to work on the things that will make him an NHLer. He’s talented enough offensively that he could be a regular third pairing guy despite his defensive shortcomings, but he refuses to improve on this one thing that’s holding him back: glacial decision making. He’s got incredible vision and passing ability, but he’s too slow to make decisions and by the time he does make the pass, defenders are on him.

No one should give up anything if value for him. I’d be thrilled to get a 4th.

He needs time in the NHL to grow. I think he's pretty much a finished deal in the AHL. Should be similar if he's playing the way he does in the NHL. He plays at a very deliberate pace that can be problematic. He hasn't found his offensive game at the NHL level but he also needed a year in the AHL before he found his offensive game there as well. I think there's late bloomer potential with Merkley but someone has to really give him rope. And for a guy of his size and reputation, it's going to be difficult for me to see any NHL team give him what he needs to succeed. Someone will probably take a shot on him but it will be more limited than he would need to get better. He's great at moving the puck which depth levels on teams can definitely use to get better but he's not good defensively.

If the Sharks are looking to move him, I would suspect another similarly aged defenseman is what they'd look for since they have him, Kniazev, Laroque, and Hatakka as their only depth defensemen outside of the NHL under contract.

Could see the Canes poke around if the price is right. They may see the potential to rehab him like they did with DeAngelo.

The fact they they need a 2nd unit ppqb might also play into their possible interest.

I would agree with this. I think our best bet is to get a Trevor Carrick type D (good AHL D, not good NHL D that’s a bit older) which honestly I’d welcome at this point. Cuda are trotting out a bunch of ECHL level guys on D.

He’s no where near that level. He made the PP look worse for the Barracuda.

I know it gets said about every offensive defenseman that struggles defensively but Merkley should honestly just be a forward. I think most of the time this gets said it doesn't consider how the player actually generates their offense (with many needing the space provided up high in the zone) but I think with Merkley's tools he could be/could have been if he's as bad as Sharks fans are saying a very good winger.

Wasn't he dece last season when he played almost half the year on the big club? Was surprised to see him start in the AHL this year.
6pts in 39 games as an offense first player.

Seems like he hasn't shaken his issues, which was the risk part that people talked about and were dismissed by more optimistic fans.

Zadina for Merkley seems like a decent change of scenery trade
That seems horrible for Detroit unless they really plan on using that cap space.

Merkley is a cocky, jerky, lazy, annoying, bum. He isn't good enough to produce anything above average OFD production and that is only if you discard any idea of a team concept and let him run wild.

He is questionable defensively on a very mediocre San Jose AHL team and is not exactly a point producer. At this stage Adam Clendenning looked like the more complete player and they are very comparable types of players.

While Merkley may have some level of potential left and is that "rhd" position so sought after. He does not seem driven enough, effective enough or intelligent enough on the ice to warrant any level of quality return and might be best viewed as a potential waiver wire pick up in the future.
