I don't think LA or Anaheim are potential landing spots if he is looking for opportunity, even without a Chyrchrun trade to LA.
As the roster currently stands, Buffalo is a pretty good landing spot. Only 3 of 7 defensive spots are locked down. Burn a ELC year and unless he sucks will likely get third pair minutes in the NHL next year.

Still unsure with what he does.

This actually gives me muuuuch more confidence. I just don't think he wants to say oh yeah I'm 100% in so he can get some leverage to burn a year off his ELC.

But Lance seems to think taking the 2nd round pick in this draft would be much more valuable in terms of us using it as a trade piece. Which I could understand if we see him maxing out as a 5 or 6th defenseman.

Color me intrigued.

“I really like the Sabres, and I really like Buffalo,” Johnson explained. “It's crazy that this year is going really fast. Just gonna have to wait and see, too. And obviously, just focus where I am right now. That opportunity will be great when it comes.
“I think Buffalo, they do have great opportunities, and it's an excellent place to play. So, I don't think that will be a problem. It just going to be my decision and talking to their general manager to get their view.”

Solid quotes.

What would happen if Buffalo didn't sign him, took the comp pick, then signed him afterwards?

Seems like an unlikely scenario

All signs point to him signing. Thats fantastic. I disagree with Lance that the pick is more valuable than Johnson. Even if Lance has a personal evaluation of Johnson as a number 5 or 6 defenseman, that’s still valuable especially to us.

I don’t think Kevyn is happy with his 3rd pair. Johnson may not be a world beater but if he’s an upgrade on Bryson? I’ll take that in a heartbeat over a lottery ticket we won’t see for what, 4-5 seasons from right now?

I believe the comp pick in is 2024 since the Sabres hold Johnson's rights beyond the date of the 2023 Draft.

Also odd to think that getting another 2nd round pick is something more valuable than the player when they already have three 2nds this coming year.
I don’t get his valuation at all. Why would Johnson ask for PP time? He’s not even the PP guy on his college team. He’s a good defender first. A PK guy. Is he hoping the 2024 pick becomes Ryan Johnson in 2027?

Yeah, the PP time talk regularly chaps my soul since it isn't even what he does in Minny. He has a lot of the tools we would think of in a PP QB type but that has not been his game in the USHL or NCAA. He's more of a Brett Hedican type - great skater who kills plays defensively.

Has there even been a quote of him saying he wants PP time? No idea why people are sooo caught up on this

Queue annual "3 2nds for a 1st" trade talk.

I agree with him that he will sign elsewhere. I don't agree that the 2nd round pick is a valuable trade piece since KA doesn't trade draft picks to improve the roster.

I really hope he signs, he could be the defensive D we need to round out the PK.

If him and Levi sign in April I will be over the moon. If not I will be waiving my first at clouds screaming ' f you Cal Peterson, you started this'

He sent a 3rd round pick back to Vegas in the Eichel trade.

But maybe you're talking about other types of trades where he moves a 3rd for a middling role player that will get waived within a year.
