I thought he was pretty poor in his two games since coming back from the WJC, even though he racked up some points. His decision making did not impress me. Held onto the puck too long at some times, panicked and blindly threw it away at others. Guess you can put it down to readjusting to the NCAA, but I actually expected him to come back and be more confident.
He had company. Lacombe was worse.

I think that happens to a lot of kids coming back on WJ to college specifically. Just an adjustment I think. College hockey is faster and tougher than WJ, with much less skill. I think he’ll be ok.

I really glad that many on this thread have overcome the board imposed stigma of having been obtained with the ROR pick and bein picked by Botts while other "better picks" were still on the board and are looking at Johnson and his development.

While I understand the frustration, many overlooked the player. He's developing nicely and as mentioned above could look good on Buffalo's left side in a couple of years.

People didn't overlook the player.

He didn't have a great Draft+1 season. That added with him being a defenseman who has never put up great offensive numbers at any level and being taken over impact forwards (Kaliyev & Brink) and people didn't like the pick.

Even with him having a solid Draft+2 season, there are still going to be people that wish that Kaliyev was the pick. And that has nothing to do with the ROR trade fallout.

I didn't like the pick I wanted Hoglunder but he has developed nicely and glad he is our pick.Smart quick shutdown defenceman with untapped offensive potential sounds damn good to me.I would however never hate on a pick just because I wanted someone else. I want all of our picks to succeed

Thanks. That clears it up

Mark Pysyk V2.0 doesnt move the needle for me for passing on a prolific goal scorer like kayliev. Even if Kayliev busts I'd know I rolled the dice on a game breaker. Johnson as our pick screams Karabacek, Cornell, Baptiste, Bailey etc etc etc all over again.
There's a reason teams like Tampa are on top of the world...they chance on pure skill and not low ceiling types.

No no no. RyJo will have an actual NHL career. Nothing about this screams Karabacek. Stop.

About 2014 NHL draft. That was the year that Botts tried to package the three 2nds to move into the 1st round right? If the take is we shoulda picked Montour and Dvorak instead of Cornel and Karabacek thats fine. But ostensibly it was a lousy 2nd round in the eyes of GMs on draft day. Just look at the list of 2nds that year its pretty rough.

Edit, Murray not botts

Botterill seemed to draft well based on preliminary results. Much better than Murray although both had their issues.

I get not liking the pick. But you’re not exactly being rational if you’re still going to hate the pick even if Kayliev busts.

Call me crazy but maybe see what the kid becomes (and Kayliev for that matter) before we decide if we hate the pick or not.

You put some god damn respect on that name!

Also, it's spelled Cornel.

Isn't Johnson a FAR better skater than Pysyk at the same age? Thought I remember Pysyk had to totally rebuild his skating style when he turned pro (think I remember reading a Dawn Braid piece at some point)

Pysyk was always a plus skater. I remember his pivots getting much quicker after he went pro, though. Johnson looks, to my eye, to be the faster of the 2. Pysyk was always very smooth, but Johnson just plain has wheels.
