Hi,

will Tobias Rieder (Kitchener Rangers) be a possible first rounder next year? He seem to have an amazing start with 11 points in 7 games (1 point more than Landeskog.

Any comments about his first OHL-games? I only know his stats.

Thanks

Greetings from Berlin

He's been a treat to watch. He could easily have had a few more goals (he's hit a few posts and had a couple just squeak to the outside of the net). His speed gives him a real advantage. He's starting to backcheck a little better than he was, and he's learning to deal with the physical stuff in the OHL.

Has had a much better start than Tom Kuhnhackl has in the OHL. Who is considered a better prospect? they had very similar years for Landshut last year but Rieder has come out of the gates flying in the OHL.

What´s up with Kühnhackl anyway? Don´t get to see any OHL hockey in Germany so any reports from guys who saw him actually play. His start i Windsor looks not so good

he looks to be heating up now, two goals in his last two games. I don't think he's playing a top 6 role but Windsor fans would be in a much better position than me to comment on that.

Thing is, most German hfboards posters have only read about Kühnhackl and Rieder and have not actually seen either one play so we're not a big help here.

Might be possible that we're expecting too much of Tom because of his famous father, who knows.

Tobia Rieder

Anyone have any thoughts on this kid? I've seen him play and think he's small but his game will translate to the NHL level. Just wondering what round you guys expect him to go by?

He's a top 3 round I'd think. He'll be a big-time player for Kitchener next season I'd imagine with Landeskog (NHL likely), Tippoff (OA), D'Amigo (AHL), and Akeson (OA) moving on.

Will have a chance to take over the offensive duties for the team.

Should go mid to late second round. Hes a really tenacious forward for his size, but he lost out in a numbers game in Kitchener during the second half so he fell from being a potential first rounder to second round or less. Hes pretty skilled though and good defensively so I can't see him dropping too far.

LIike Iannicello said, he'll have a big role next year, likely first line.

Tobias Rieder

Tobias Rieder is beside Tom Kühnhack the best german forward prospect right now.
In Germany Tobias Rieder was already as a young kid an outstanding prospect.
As a 14 year old he had 177 pts (113) goals in 34 games in the german school League.
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=34851
It was only the school league, but that were extraordinary numbers in Germany.
So with 16 he played already with Landshut (the former team of Marco Sturm) in the 2nd tier and did pretty good.
There were high expections for him.

As a great prospect in Germany he went to Kitchener as a 17 year old. His beginning was solid, but then he got exhaused a bit in the 2nd half ot the season and also had to play 3rd line minutes, after Kitchener made a trade for another forward I guess.
But for me the NHL potenital was always there and I thought he would be a 2nd round pick. Then he slipped to the 4th round and to my big surprise the Oilers really drafted him. :handclap:
That was great, and so I even hope more that he fits my expectations and become a good NHLer.
In the summer I said I see him as a mix between Marco Sturm and Brad Marachand. Without the nastiness of Marchand though.
I got laughed at when I said before and at the beginning of the season that expect him to become a Top 9 Forward in the NHL and I see him as a potential Hemsky replacement as our 2nd line RW.
But he developes pretty good this season as it seems.

That numbers look great. he also had another sh Goal tonight, and a sh assist yesterday. he seems to became a sh specialist.
It would be nice if some kitchener fans, or guys who see him often play could say something about his play and development.

His goal today was great, although it was a pretty bad defensive breakdown by the Knights. The Ranger squad didn't play that well today but he was definitely one of the bright spots for them.

I was just about to search for a Rieder thread and if I couldn't find one, I was going to make one.

I'm interested to hear what those who have seen him play have to say.

I myself haven't seen him play live, but it's sure nice to see him putting up some points. Along with Martin Gernat and Brandon Davidson, Tobias Reider has been a big surprise for me this year for Oil prospects. I did not expect them to have offensive explosions.

His RW position is also intriguing as the Oilers lack depth there when it comes to prospects.

Who are his usual linemates?

Michael Catenacci and Radek Faksa are usually his centers. For as much as I watch Kitchener I couldn't tell you the regular left wing he plays with. Varies a lot. Plays a bit with Andrew Cresenzi as well.

He's centred by Catenacci about 99% of the time; his regular left winger is Ben Thomson.

Reider has been fantastic so far this year - shooting from everywhere on the ice and using his speed to get to scoring areas and loose pucks.

I don't really like Thomson on the wing with him, but Catenacci and Reider are just amazing together i would attribute some of his success to Cat. Only because they have amazing chemistry.

Yeah, I always thought it was Faksa centering him. Glad you cleared that up for me.

Consistently he has played with Cat and Thomson all year. The odd time Spott will sprinkle in another player to stoke the team, but mostly it's Thomson, who, despite his lack of puck skills, creates lots of room for those two and is an under-rated passer.

As for Rieder, he's got good speed and a quick, accurate release. He has a nose for the net and can stick-handle in a phone booth. He's a good finisher.

What you won't see is dominance with the puck. He doesn't carry the play or do a lot of heavy-lifting. He's an opportunist for sure and knows where to go. Plus, he's as good as any junior I've seen with foot-to-stick coordination. It's like second nature to him. He takes countless pucks from the skate blade to the stick blade as he's accelerating. It's a high skill play.

He can easily be out-muscled though and a lot of the time you don't notice him out there. If I'm thinking of NHL comparables, he's closer to guys like Cammalleri and Perron in the pure-skill, find the soft spots in coverage-types who aren't puck raggers or dominant in any one facet.

He'll be hit-and-miss to play top-6 in the NHL. He has an excellent shot at it, but still needs a couple years of strengthening.

Thank you and the other posters for the detailled info.
I like to read several and different opinions about him.
So keep posting, guys, if you see some games from him.

I see it nearly the same as you.
He has a lot of pro's, but, especially, as a smaller player some cons.
But I believe he can make it to become a Top 6 forward in the NHL.
Of course only if he keeps developing.
I know that he has the heart and will to do anything to become a NHL player.
Pointwise he took a big step this year, and it seems that this year he doesn't slow down as last year.hope he keeps producing.
How is he defensively. I have in mind that he has a pretty good defensive awereness also.
How do you see it this season?
