I've seen Schoenborn in person a few times. The team I follow (Lincoln Stars - USHL) drafted him last year, and he played a few games with the team earlier this year.

Big, big kid for a '95. Physically, he has all the tools. Watched him at the Stars' tryout camp in Minneapolis last June, and he had coaches and scouts drooling with his shot. Extremely heavy shot and accurate.

Footwork/Skating needs a lot of work, and he wasn't playing against kids who were that good when he was with Omaha AAA. He was invisible in the few games I watched him play at the USHL level, but that's to be expected. You go from playing against a bunch of 15 year olds who are 5'8", 150 pounds to playing grizzled USHL vets who are 6'5", 220 pounds.

I'm just disappointed the Stars wasted a USHL futures draft pick on him, only to see him go to major juniors. Hopefully it's not a decision he regrets later.

Thanks for the report! Hope to have something to add tonight if he gets to play.

RW Alex Schoenborn - Portland Winterhawks, WHL (2014 Draft)

Alex Schoenborn, RW, 6'01, 194 lbs (68•17•17•34•18•114): Schoenborn might not have the same scoring ability as Iverson but he's meaner, loves to get involved, knock players around or drive right through them, as evidenced by his 114 PIM (Twice this season I've had him ranked twice in the CHL for PIM by 2014-eligible players). But he's also showing a knack for getting open and going to high-traffic areas and of his 17 goals only 1 came on the power-play. When he starts to get more ice-time next season, there's no reason he can't develop his game even further. Wsa ranked 57th on the CSS' mid-season list.

...the talent to be real steal in this year's draft.

Schoenborn really opened my eyes during a trip to Portland earlier this season. My kind of player.

Sharks would have won a Cup if they drafted Brayden Point instead of Schoenborn. Point was the significantly better player in the Dub and the Sharks opted for size instead of track record.

Sharks under Tim Burke drafting would have never drafted Point. Zero chance they wouldve picked a small guy.

Also plenty of other things changing wouldve also led to the sharks winning a cup, I wouldnt single this random pick as one.

Every team passed over Point, TBL included. He obviously surpassed even the wildest expectations. If a team thought he would have turned out how he did, he would have been one of the first guys picked in the entire draft.
