After another surprising win by the Russians, I noticed that somehow we have been able to get quite many positive results against the North American teams in the recent years.

Last 10 games vs USA:

2015 1/4: Russia - USA 3:2
2014 1/4: Russia - USA 5:3
2013 RR: Russia - USA 2:1
2008 RR: Russia - USA 2:3
2008 BMG: Russia - USA 4:2
2006 1/2: Russia - USA 5:1
2005 RR: Russia - USA 4:5
2005 1/2: Russia - USA 7:2
2004 RR: Russia - USA 1:4
2003 RR: Russia - USA 5:1

Last 10 games vs Canada:

2014 BMG: Russia - Canada 2:1
2013 RR: Russia - Canada 1:4
2013 BMG: Russia - Canada 6:5
2012 1/2: Russia - Canada 6:5
2011 RR: Russia - Canada 3:6
2011 GMG: Russia - Canada 5:3
2009 1/2: Russia - Canada 5:6
2007 GMG: Russia - Canada 2:4
2006 GMG: Russia - Canada 0:5
2005 GMG: Russia - Canada 1:6

That makes it for 11 - 9 in favor of team Russia.

Knowing how stacked the Canadians and Americans are every year, having an over 500 record versus them is quite incredible.

And this is all considering that we flop versus Europeans nations like Swiss and Czechs pretty easily.

What you guys think the main reasons for successful play vs NA teams?

Shows how strong the development system is in Russia. The best Russians have been developed in Russia which is why the so called Russian factor is ********.

Russia has been good for years and it isn't surprising anymore. They adopted the North American style a long time ago and can play with anyone now.

I don't think you can group USA and Canada together.

In that last 10 games sample size you chose Russia has a winning record vs the Yanks but a losing one vs the Canadians.

Russians have the "hanging in there" factor that we don't see with the more skilled teams(no offense intended). They know how to be badly outplayed and somehow come out with the win. Teams like Canada and the USA usually don't find themselves in those situations.

I think the more interesting factor is the last 5 matches against Canada and the USA Russia has won 4/5 matches.

10-2 to Russia.

That does not make Russia better. I feel the Russians are forced to play a conservative, defensive game against these two nations as they can not compete playing the "Russian" way. Russia does not have the players to do that.

Parking the bus in front of net and then relying on individual brilliance to steal wins appears to have been working for the last 5 or so years. They effectively have been adopting a traditional Finland like approach but with more players that can steal games on the rush.

Notice how against the Swedes Russia played more open and it was entertaining end to end hockey.

Sweden 9 - 1 Russia

It's simple.

Russian teams aren't physically intimidated anymore.

That may be true but they no longer play the game Russians are generally known for. It has brought results, so Russian hockey fans can not complain but in the future I hope Russia have squads that can control matches against these two. With the way development is going, it is a realistic possibility in the near future.

just no, among these games are the most lopsided games i've ever seen.
sweden and finns have inferiority complex before the na team, but we always bring the best out of them. expect another easy one for sweden in the semifinal.

I think we outplayed Sweden in the round robin game and were unlucky to lose. If we play strong, we can certainly beat Sweden

Your only able to beat NA teams because you copied swedish hockey. You play the exact same style swedish teams played 10 years ago. I know you want to believe there is a rivalry but cmon..

I have watched the majority of those games, and outside 2 or 3 the majority have been quiet even with Russia it's share control of play.

Another easy win lol? None of the wins were easy, I think the last 6 or 7 matches have ended with 1 goal wins for Sweden and Russia's only win against Sweden in the past 10 matches was by 1 goal.

ehmmmm... our problem maybe is that we didn't adopt anything from the swedish style.

and yes, there is a rivalry on the players' side.

I know you want to believe Russians had to learn hockey from anybody, but cmon...

10 years ago Sweden had embarked on a hot streak of not winning a Medal for 11 years at the WJC (1997-2008). I highly doubt Russia copied a method that was largely ineffective at Junior Level.

Matchups. USA and Canada like a high paced game and make a lot of plays off the rush. This allows Russia to go the other way while NA forwards are chasing the puck on the forecheck and they excel when they go through the neutral zone with speed(scoring goals, drawing penalties). But the mental fortitude has been impressive, aswell, in many of those wins.

Russia probably gets about half the amount of neutral zone rushes against Sweden(and Finland) that they had today against USA. It's a big matchup difference.

Making the russian players angry is just something you do to get them off their game. It has always been like that lol. Has little to do with rivalry. That the russian players gets cranky then when they lose doesn't mean theres a rivalry. Not from a swedish perspective anyways..

Sorry but all you have to do is look at how they play. It's old swedish hockey 101. And that they have asked our federation to teach them our hockey program kinda confirms it. Although it's a different program now they definitely have been snooping around.

I agree they have been snooping around and even recently adopted some Swedish development methods, as everything went to trash in the 90's in Russia. Many nations have played this style in the past, and the lesser nations pretty much still do. I don't think they really "adopted" it.
