Barzal also went from a great player in his rookie year to a meh player.

at least the NYI have a dynasty and 4 cups. Buffalo doesn't have anything but the memory of Dominic Hasek. SO the fall of the NYI is more interesting to me than the depression that surrounds the Sabres.
Barzal had 80 points last year and has been a pretty consistent #1C his entire career. Not sure I'd call him meh.

okay.
Take a close look at Montreal right now. Kent Hughes will be facing 3 options of what to do with his first round pick. Interesting choice to be made here.
Actually drafting for a future trade is one of those options though i think there is a more interesting one that will be on the table.
Montreal has 9 options for their future top 6 already. They have too many quality D for their top 4 now. They have their future goalies most likely in Jacob Fowler and Jakub Dobes. They need to upgrade their bottom 6 players. There are a number of strategies to do that but you dont draft bottom 6 guys in the top ten. (i mean unless your stupid fricken past Management of Ottawa). I have no Doubt either in the short term (at the draft) or the longer term (draft and trade) Kent Hughes will turn this years pick into 3 plus assets for his bottom 6.
Montreal is not the only example of this.
If you have a high pick I'd say the value at the draft table will be greater than the value three years down the road the majority of times. This is especially true if you think that prospect will have a difficult time breaking into a lineup.

We should find a way to fleece Montreal in a trade. They are desperate. Last place just like the good old yakupov, eberle, rnh, hall era with no way but down until they get their generational talent. Slafkovsky is a bust. Lane Hutson zero goals and nothing good except those end to end Instagram highlight dangles leading to dead puck.

They need to rebuild the rebuild.

We give them 2nd and 3rd from blues, oilers receive Kaiden Guhle. Hometown Edmonton boy.

They need a roster player, a good defensive player right now in the short term for their bottom 6 and they need a short term top 4 defensive D.
We might have a bottom 6 guy to spare when were healthy but as far as getting Kaiden back your in never never land.
BUT they have a defenseman Luke Mittelstadt (Casey's brother) and a Goalie Quentin Miller both unsigned you could look at. Future pieces with good upside. Calgary and Montreal make excellent trade partners for this coming draft. Calgary doesn't have their first but will back the brinks truck up to get Roger McQueen. They have two firsts early and likely mid 20's. Plus their own 2nd and maybe even a bottom six guy like popisil. Going to be hard for Boston to beat their offer but they will try because Boston will be desparate for Roger too. Fits their style well.
FOR our top 4 two way D you will have to look elsewhere.

Once an Oiler....

They will move Fowler before Minty unless the little ball of hate is as stupid as he looks.
- Minttyukov being traded just seems strange to me what's up with bad teams trading promising young d-men? (I prefer Jiricek)
- Borgen I like a ton, but the analytics has him as roughly a bottom 10 d-man in the league, at the moment (not the norm for him) and while I do think we can turn him around, 2nd pairing d seems too important to leave anything to chance.
- Provorov I like just not as a partner to Nurse
- Martinez, I see as roughly on par with Kulak, but I doubt he matches the Kulak Nurse synergy, so seems more like a partner for Emberson.
- Savard, in his prime was someone I coveted, but these days he's got slow boots and a slow mind. Easy pass.
- Dumoulin, I prefer to Martinez, but he strikes me as a bit vanilla
- Fowler- deservers to get shit on for his level of play, but like OEL I think he will bounce back and find his game again, I just don't know if it will be with the first team that gives him a try or the second.
- Andersson- is the stud pick-up that I think is a really good match for Nurse, but I can't see CGY giving him to us for anything outside of a stupid price.

Solid breakdown, though I think Martinez below Kulak because the years and miles are catching up to him.

With Mintyukov I wonder if it's a situation where he's the player "he is" but the team keeps wanting/expecting him to be something else and it's causing them to wonder if the "grass is greener"?

In the end, he's the best option (assuming he can play consistent at the NHL level for the Oilers), because he's young, cost controlled and seems to move the puck like a beast. The Oilers should be willing to pay a lot to get him because there's a strong fit there.

With Borgen I don't know, he hasn't wowed with is resume so far, but I do wonder if there's a bit more player there, like what Kulak has become, but he is a fit as well.

How about this?

Beau Akey
2nd and 3rd

Kaden Guhle

Or we find a 3rd team involved. Somehow habs end up with fowler

Akey for Fowler with the ducks

To Montreal
Fowler
2nd, 3rd

To oilers
Kaiden Guhle

Ek Bouch
Nurse Guhle
Emberson kulak
Stetcher

Guhle played on the right side this season.

I would much rather get Mintyukov than Guhle.

I wonder if St. Louis is gambling on a flip here.

Pay a 2nd now with retention in place, see if he revitalizes his game with a new team, then ship him off at the deadline with more retention for a much better return.

He'd have to have a strong little run with them, but I doubt I think Armstrong is going for it.
