Florida being gifted a 3-0 start meant no matter what they have like a 99% chance of winning the Cup.

If we had a goalie that could've held serve in any one of the first 3 games we probably win the Cup.

Skinner was horribad in the Vancouver series, we're lucky he didn't flush that series down the toilet because if they did you'd be getting taunted by dumb Canucks fans probably to this day of this site.
Getting shutout in game 1 and only mustering 1 goal in game 2 had nothing to do with it?

We solved Florida/Bob too late. If you rewatch that series too, and I doubt many have around here, we also got complete f***ed up the ass by Maurice and his gaming of the Refs.

It is of your opinion that we didn’t win the Cup cause of goaltending. But it’s an opinion only. An opinion that JJ and Oilers management that lived through the Cup finals don’t agree with. We know this cause they upgraded offence this off season, they wanted the ability to score more.

We can debate which is the right move. But don’t act like it’s a for sure conclusion that it all came down to goaltending.

They should claim Alex Nylander if for nothing else that to up the skill level at Bakersfield and giving Savoie and Philp someone more skilled to play with.

The thing with Skinner is he's not consistently mediocre. We could work with that.

Instead he revolves between excellent and unplayable with pretty much no predictability at all and that's a problem when you don't have much more than a plug filler at backup.
Just play well every time. No one in this league is adjusting their effort/systems based on predictions on their goalies performance.

Yes I would agree with this. We need to bolster the AHL roster. Give our prospects something to work with. Developing in a losing environment is not great.

The time to get Dostal was last year, but of course this team is too lazy to be proactive on things like that. Now Dostal would cost a 1st + Savoie if the Ducks are even interested in selling.
Oh, I agree. That ship has sailed. Still the only goalie from that team i'd be interested in though.

Game 1 we allowed only 17 shots against and lost, Skinner .882
Game 2, Skinner with a .893
Game 3, Skinner with a .826

Skinner was absolutely a big part of the reason we don't have a Cup banner. Hard to win a series when your starter starts it like that.

2/3 bad games to start a series, ok fine maybe you can work with that, but 3/3 is virtually impossible to come back from.

Not sure if this scenario has ever happened but can another team have claimed Fabrro and then traded him to us with 50% retention? Or does he have to go back through waivers first?
I am not sure why a team that has a 26 year old dman that is on a decent contract who is playing well would want to trade him. I would try to re-sign him if I were them.

Mintyukov? Yes please.

Game 1 we scored zero goals.
Game 2 we score 1.
Game 3 we scored 3, Florida scored 4.
Games 4-6 $10M Bob went .688-.842 essentially giving us back all of Skinners “bad” games.

Not scoring enough is also a big reason we don’t have a Cup banner as well.

Truth is you can break this series down one way or the other and pick and choose which narrative you want to support.

But Hockey wins and losses are the result of many variables. It’s not one or the other. It very well could be both. So I disagree with assessment that it’s only on one thing.

Also let’s keep in mind we went 99.7% of the way to a Cup. The Oilers build and strategy was 99.7% correct. We got closer than every single team in the League with our roster build last year except for 1 team.

It's one reason, but Skinner is a big reason too.

First time in the McDavid era we made the playoffs, you want to guess how many goals we scored in games 1/2/3 combined?

5.

You want to know what the series was after 3 games? 2-1 Edmonton. You want to know why? Because Talbot was outf***ingstanding. We won that series because of Cam Talbot.

Goaltending matters. A lot.

Speaking as someone who was at Game 2 vs the Sharks, I don't know I've ever seen a more dominant performance from the team. I could've been in the net and the result would've been the same.

Also uh, they got their asses blown away in game 4 and needed the offense to save the day in game 5.

They got blown out in one game, whoopity doo.

In the 2 games they won to get that 2-1 series lead, they had a whopping 3 goals total.

Talbot is absolutely the main reason they had a 2-1 series lead, with that level of goal scoring they could have been down 0-3 just like the Finals.

He was outstanding in the series clinching game too, .964 save percentage we won basically scoring 2 goals that game, McDavid added a nothing empty netter with one second left.

We have that Talbot in net and we win the Cup no questions asked last year and maybe even the prior year too. Team is too lazy to put in the work to find someone like that.

And Skinner allowed 1 goal in two games in LA. He allowed 12 in the entire Dallas series, 16 in the entire Florida series. what's the problem again? Oh right, the Vancouver series.

I wonder why the Red Wings stopped using Talbot? Hard to be good when you're hurt.

The problem is every other playoff round he's not that great. He wasn't good in the Finals either, not having a single .890 or better game to start a series for 3 straight games is dog shit. You basically need a miracle to win a series at that point.

I actually would like to see how many NHL teams have ever won a playoff round with a goalie that was sub .890 for the first 3 games of any series outside of like the 1980s when a .890 was OK.

Your buddy Talbot could've been in net and it still wouldn't have helped us put up some goals.

Hell, go back to that Winnipeg series. We scored one goal in 2 games at home. You know the rest.

What does that have to do with shitting the bed for 3 games to start a series?

How many teams do you think have come back to win a series when their goalie starts with sub .890 in the first 3 games?

We threw away a Cup and for what? Because we were embarrassed by the Campbell situation and didn't want to give any second effort. That's our front office. They live to do the bare minimum. McDavid deserved a Cup but they probably don't, not with that level of effort.

You can't win if you don't score. The Panthers didn't win in the two games where they put up a single goal. And that game 2 was an atrocious effort from the team. Don't believe me? Check out McDavid's tirade.

Well it's not like there was like a Bobrovsky in net stopping us from just scoring at will.

Florida's front office deserved that Cup, the Oilers front office didn't deserve it.

The only sad part about it is Draisaitl and especially McDavid deserved that Cup though, but they won't have it because our front office doesn't want to try as much as other teams' front offices.

Even look at who was Florida's back up ... Stolarz ... he's lights out in Toronto this year. That tells me their scouting dept knows their shit.

They don't want to try with goaltending, won't change the goaltending coach, won't do a damn thing about anything because a drunk Jack Campbell broke their heart one time and now they want to be a bunch of sappy bitches about that and never try again.

Weird, because Bobrovsky certainly looked vulnerable in games 4-6. Even the one goal he allowed in game 2 was hilariously bad. No goalie is invincible and every time I hear the "Goalie'd" excuse I roll my eyes.

Bob is a bit of a weird goalie, he is able to elevate his game to almost super human levels but then can have a stretch where he isn't great, but he has that upper end talent roof so when he is locked in, good luck. His roof is as high as any goalie in the modern league.

I still think he was the best player for the Panthers in the Finals, in all four games they won he absolutely killed us and you only have to win four.

He wasn't really that great outside of game 1. The Panthers did a very good job boxing us out (especially in game 2). Once we adjusted... well, the rest speaks for itself.

But again, all goalies are beatable. I distinctly remember all the chatter around Hellybuck after the Winnipeg series. Then Montreal, a team with a lot less offense, handled the Jets effortlessly.

That's just the same thing, picking out the one variable in wins and losses, but you picked a different series, against the downtrending Sharks. But yes, of course Goaltending matters. So does alot of other things, have to consider it all if you want to nail down the right optimization for this team going into the playoffs. For as much as we want to bellyache about last year, the result is still 99.7% of the way to a Cup, we got close. Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater and pretend like it was a complete failure of a season and management did everything wrong.

Montreal only made the Finals that year because Price was outstanding.

Good for Florida for winning, at least this part of it I'm at peace with ... their front office deserved it, ours didn't.

Their front office built that team with a ton of great moves, took risks when necessary, and put a lot of care into building all aspects of the team, not just 1 or 2. Our front office frankly just doesn't work that hard and isn't that smart.

They deserved it on that basis.

If any one of our management teams was in charge of Florida, they wouldn't have a players like Forsling or Verhage, they never would have done the Hubderdeau trade, they'd have stood pat and kept wandering the wild.

Okay listened to the Fried segment.

"One of the teams I wonder about is Anaheim, they got 5 LHD, but Oilers are generally looking for a Righty right, so I don't know if that's an exact mix right..."

I don't really even know why Fried is throwing up some of these names in relation to Oilers. He mentioned the Ducks have 5 LHD, well shit, we are full up on LHD as well. It's one of the reasons Broberg was squeezed out of here and never felt part of the picture. In relation to MINTY, he said he's a good young player and you want him to play. Later on in the segment he mentions Cam Fowler for sure being on his way out. He never really said the Oilers are looking at Mintyukov, it's just Fried wondering out loud and thinking Anaheim needs to move someone cause of the logjam at LHD, which we all know they do cause Fowler wants out and they tried to include him in the Trouba trade.

Their Front office also gets to play with 15% more effective cap space than us, and their front office also has the son of the VP of the NHL. No one wants to come out and say it and act like a sore loser, but I guarantee if you sat down and rewatched that series, you'd get the impression that we got completely f***ed by the Officials. Then you watch Maurice's pressers, and you can just hear him gaming the Refs and adjusting his team's play based on the officiating. But credit is due for that, if you aren't cheating you aren't trying to win. And Maurice has spent his whole career battling with Refs, and figuring out Refs in this League. A luxury of experience that Knoblauch has never had.

The time to get Dostal was last year, but of course this team is too lazy to be proactive on things like that. Now Dostal would cost a 1st + Savoie if the Ducks are even interested in selling.
Even last year was too late. By that time the Ducks had already known that Dostal was good, and Gibson was already being floated as a possibility to be on the outs for that reason.
