Kapanen and Podkolzin are not top 6 guys, and Henrique-Brown aren't 3rd liners. Impossible to upgrade all the holes on fwd but we have to get at least one scoring winger- and no, Kane is not a "deadline acquisition", he's been dragging Draisaitl down the last 2 seasons. This team under Knob has been great defensively and has good systems, but just needs more talent.
How in the world is Henrique not a 3rd liner?
The Oilers will be overloaded at forward when Kane and Arvidsson return. What do you mean not enough talent? They'll have 7 top 6 forwards when Kane returns so they'll have a guy that has played his whole career in the top 6 on the 3rd line when healthy then you have Podkolzin, Kapanen, Janmark, Henrique, Brown, Perry, Ryan, Philp.
They're loaded at forward. Granted, a lot of it hasn't clicked yet but there's a lot of talent to work with, old talent but it's there.

I think he would be good behind the defensive system that Knob has. He has outstanding athleticism in net and would be a fair alternative to Skinner who is poor in that area.

I'm not really sure if Arvidsson has a lot left in the tank anyway, maybe he does but his age combined with injury history raises some red flags. If we can get out of that deal and bring back someone who can make a difference in some games like a Gibson could, I'd be inclined to do it.
there are several good goaltenders out there that can be had without taking up 3.25 mil of cap space (if the Ducks even retain 50%)

use that 3.25 mil on a defenseman

Our defense is a team strength. I think it's far more likely they end up spending a bunch of assets on a d-man only to find said d-man is worse with Nurse than Kulak is and that D ends up on the bottom pairing.

If we can have more reliable goaltending that stays above .905 with the defensive system we already have, we are extremely difficult for other teams to beat.

I'd rather get a younger D that we have some run way with too like a Valimaki who is only 2 million than get another dinosaur on the back end anyway.

We need to be careful about having too many older players, Gibson at only 31 for a goalie is still a reasonable age, Valimaki and Fabbri are both under age 30.

Brock Nelson would have be traded at max retention if the Oilers are pursuing him this early. He probably cost what Rico cost. Maybe a sweetener.

That probably leaves the Oilers with St. Louis picks for a top 4/5 D.

Well then don't have him on the 2nd pair.

Nurse-Kulak are outstanding together, why are some people so reticent to overlook what's obviously staring them in the face ... Nurse has as D partner and his name is Kulak.
Because another puckmover wouldn't hurt. Great defence wins championships. If you want the bottom pair to be Stecher and Emberson going into the Playoffs... all I can do is lol

I'd like Nelson here, only because he scores on us every time.

Other than that, just seems a bit old. Being an American who's played in NY his whole life, he'd undoubtedly be a playoff rental.

Our defensive system already is great, we can't be so casual with the limited trade assets we do have to say "it wouldn't hurt".

We would probably have won the Cup last year if we had a 2nd goalie that could have stepped into any one of game 1, 2, or 3 and just given us one solid game of .905+ behind the good D we did have.

I am fine with a bottom pair of Valimaki-Emberson for example. All summer you said our D would fall apart this year "because Emberson and Stetcher are no Ceci and Desharnais!" ... well it turns out you were dead wrong on that, Ceci and Desharnais both suck this year, and the D is the 3rd best in the league from the third game onwards, and losing Ceci is the best thing that ever happened to Darnell Nurse.

If they manage to get fully healthy at some point I’d imagine the plan right now would be shift RNH back to center, reunite Janmark-Henrique-Brown as the “4th line”(knowing well they’ll get more ice time than a handful of guys above them), and then mix and match the rest of the wing spots. Kapanen’s play so far has earned him a regular spot in the lineup for me at least, his speed is impactful and is lessening the loss of Foegle, McLeod and Holloway. Plus he’s starting to get into the PK mix. I’d look at something like this maybe:

Skinner-McDavid-Hyman
Podkolzin-Draisaitl-Arvidsson
Kane-RNH-Kapanen
Janmark-Henrique-Brown
Perry

Skinner is the big question mark, it seems like his game is coming around lately but he’s still got a ways to go. If he still hasn’t clicked like they had hoped come February I do wonder if they’ll talk to him about a change of scenery. H’d be well within his rights to refuse and ride it out to break the playoff drought but he’s also making his next summer significantly more difficult with how it’s gone here so far. He might be open to a move to a bubble team where he would feature more prominently in the offense to show he’s still got it. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that though.
I don’t think Skinner would entertain moving at all, only way I could maybe see it is if he really doesn’t find his footing in the top 6 here and another contender with a spot in the top 6 for him was interested. It’s insane the forward depth this team has and I’m betting we’ll see their effectiveness ramp up in the second half of the year.

I would like to see them get Philp into the lineup as I do think it would be beneficial to have a right shot C in the lineup and Ryan just isn’t a full time player anymore but at the same time where do you put him when potentially you have a guy who scored 25 last year playing on your 4th line lol

Gotta think the Oilers are looking to LTIR Arvid is how we are able to add Nelson is my 2nd guess. Drai definitely gets moved to McDavid's wing.

I feel like this is the direction it ends up going. Bruins, Hurricanes, Kings, Lightning, Capitals and Jets are a few playoff teams that look like they could use a cheap Top 6 scoring punch player at the deadline on a quick peek.

Lots of teams would love to add a guy like him to supplement their scoring depth for basically no cost.

I'm leery of spending big assets on guys that probably are pure rentals.

If our front office(s) didn't f*** up so many assets and we had a more solid overall depth to the team, ok, but as is I think we need to be careful in that acquiring players should be guys who can help and be here for 2-3 seasons cost controlled, not just half a year and then gone.

They can do what they want on the main board. *shrug* Bob's got a better track record than Eklund does. Dude hasn't had anything in two decades.
He has no track record though. He’s your classic fake insider that just repeats what he hears from actual insiders hence the ban .
