We have the 2nd lowest goals against in the NHL since the 3rd game of the season (Cup hangover). That's with Emberson and Stetcher who people swore up and down would cause our D to collapse. Well it hasn't collapsed, from about game 3 of the season it's allowing the 2nd lowest GA/G I believe (2.4 GA/G).

I mean I'm not really sure it's a smart idea to spend huge on this.

Even a TJ Brodie (I know some people will flip their lid) would be fine, our D is Knob/Coffey's systems play it's not about individuals. He is a left shot D that plays the right side primarily.

In our system, a Brodie would probably look fine especially on the bottom pair.

A Skilled Right Handed Defenceman that can score goals and make plays. You put that on this team, we will be dominant.

Nurse excels when he has a partner that can retrieve the puck with success, can exit the zone with success, and deny entry to the zone- basically one who plays transition defence well. Stetcher’s analytics the last 3 seasons shows he does this well. Last time Nurse had a partner like this was Ethan Bear. His partner doesn’t need to be an elite shutdown guy, like I’ve said many times. Just a guy who can get the puck going the right way

A right shutdown D is the exact opposite of what we need- I agree.

Money.

One could argue he has enough and has his buy-out money, but we aren't using him in the way I think he envisioned, likely expected some McDrai time and he needs to put up stats for his next contract, which requires a more offensive role.

If Jeff's primary interest was winning I think we would of tried getting traded from one of the many bad teams he was on and he likely would of tried learning better defensive hockey from one of his many coaches he had over the years.

Though in saying this I acknowledge that he finally took some defensive strides with us, but it seems like Knob forced it on him relegating him to a 4th line role till he had a base competency level and fit within the general structure of our system.

This hurts. Poor asset management because they could have matched Holloway is they didn’t sign Skinner.

I agree. But here’s the caveat with Stecher, as it was with Bear. When the giants of the Panthers forecheck comes crashing down on you, can you rely on their size to eat that pressure and make the play?

Stecher has been great. I’m a fan. But we need better and bigger. And while Kulak can work in a pinch, we sacrifice from the 3rd pair to make that happen.

A skilled playmaking, goal scoring RHD that can navigate forecheck pressure is what I want.

You’re right. By not good enough I am including not consistent enough. When Skinner is on his game I think he’s a perfectly capable goalie. Probably won’t steal you many games but won’t lose you many. But he’s off far too often to not have another option behind him that isn’t better than Pickard.

What are your F lines when Kane is back and we are healthy?

Does Kapanen go back on waivers when Arvy is healthy?

If they manage to get fully healthy at some point I’d imagine the plan right now would be shift RNH back to center, reunite Janmark-Henrique-Brown as the “4th line”(knowing well they’ll get more ice time than a handful of guys above them), and then mix and match the rest of the wing spots. Kapanen’s play so far has earned him a regular spot in the lineup for me at least, his speed is impactful and is lessening the loss of Foegle, McLeod and Holloway. Plus he’s starting to get into the PK mix. I’d look at something like this maybe:

Podkolzin-Draisaitl-Arvidsson
Kane-RNH-Kapanen
Janmark-Henrique-Brown
Perry

Skinner is the big question mark, it seems like his game is coming around lately but he’s still got a ways to go. If he still hasn’t clicked like they had hoped come February I do wonder if they’ll talk to him about a change of scenery. H’d be well within his rights to refuse and ride it out to break the playoff drought but he’s also making his next summer significantly more difficult with how it’s gone here so far. He might be open to a move to a bubble team where he would feature more prominently in the offense to show he’s still got it. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that though.

Kane is on LTIR. But the Oilers are not using any of the additional space he would create so when he comes back they simply add him to the roster and do not need to do anything further.

He was also 28 the last time he was in the playoffs. He’s 34 now.

I find the idea entertaining because how could you not? But I’m not sold it’s actually a good idea haha.

Actually the more challenging part may be this year. Friedman was speculating on the cap going to $95-97M which would be reasonable given revenues. Bettman threw a slight bit of cold water on that but did not rule it out completely. In that range the Oilers would probably be able to afford both Kane and EK at 50%. This year though, unless someone is on LTIR it would be tough. They could move J. Skinner and make it work if they waived Perry, Kapanen or Brown and replace Ryan with Philp. But that is a lot of moving parts. It might make more sense to make a move for EK in the off season rather than this year if he was a target.

Honestly, right now I am completely unsure of what the Oilers plan should be. As @Soundwave points out after their 3 game debacle at the start of the year this team has been third best in the league in GA/gm even with shaky goaltending at times. At full strength they can go with many combinations that give them balance forwards. Adding an impact player would be great, but where that player plays is up in the air for me right now.
