Oilers stink after breaks. It’s annoying but a thing. This is still mostly a fantastic team.
They were terrible for like 6-7 games before the break and some against mediocre teams. There is a much bigger issue here than just rust after a long break, this is the worst an Oilers team has played this late in the season in a long time so I think major concerns should be had. I say this as a fan that's usually Glass Half Full but they haven't played consistently well since like mid to late January.

I've said this before, this is getting the feel of a team that's peaked already and is starting on its decline, a team that failed to cash in on its real Cup window the previous two years. Lots of backside of prime to past prime players on this team, there's no room for growth and lots of room for regression.

Oh come on. Big difference between the iffy hockey they were playing before the break and whatever this garbage is that they have been playing since the break.

You can tell who doesn't watch Parayko. He would be the second best defenseman on this team the moment he put on an Oilers jersey.
What do you mean? Literally every hockey fan and even many non hockey fans watched Parayko get hemmed in every shift at 4 Nations last week lol. He's so much worse than Ekholm/Bouchard it's not even funny. Not good at anticipating where pucks go and relies on his speed, not a good passer, frequently gets beat defensively. He's a better top 4 option than Kulak and maybe better than Nurse at some aspects, that's about it, and you'd have to pay him 6.5 million until 2030.

It's been worse since the break but I think you forget how bad some of the games were before the break, the egregious turnovers were happening even in games when they weren't terrible like the Colorado one right before the break.

Look at the games before the break. They were lucky to be beat the Blackhawks (almost an epic meltdown in that game) and the Blues and they were terrible against Seattle, Buffalo and Detroit maybe not terrible but definitely playing much looser than they did prior. The play was catering well before the break, defense has been atrocious for a while now, so my general point is that this poor play as of late is not solely due to rust coming off of a break. Their game hasn't been right for a while now.

If these turds dont look for a goalie, they are more than turds
It would sure be nice to have another D-man or a scoring winger but no doubt that finding another goalie is by far the number one priority. The problem is that most teams are still in the playoff hunt so prying loose a quality goaltender will be difficult.

The talk about Binnington is a good example. The Blues are still in the playoff race so would they really deal him in the next week and essentially tell the team--wait till next year guys? I think that even the most incompetent of GMs wouldn't do that.

I disagree with the Zito bringing a Cup. The league loves the Panthers and its 1000x easier to get players on good contracts living in Florida. This management should have brought everyone back (except Broberg) and ran it back. People keep saying "oh they only lost by a goal" so why the need for all the changes?
The Tkachuk trade was such a massive coup. Maybe they could use Weegar but imagine Huberdeau on that team instead of Tkachuk. We're just so used to the bare minimum around here.

There's been 3 big trades already. Rantanen, Miller, the Calgary trade was a fairly significant trade.
I think GMs are waiting for the market to form as we near the deadline, it's rare that we see too many trades the few weeks leading up to the deadline.
Yep, I think we’ll see some chatter during the weekend. Last year was a bit of a weird year though, most of the big names went way before the deadline. In the social media driven world we live in, it seems GMs are keeping things on a tighter lid now, or maybe it’s just me that thinks this.

Zito stuck his neck out for that move too. Traded away 2 of the 3 best players off of a team that won the President's Trophy.

The guy is worthy of the hype.
He knew exactly what he was getting and he also knew it was exactly what his team needed. Had they won the Cup in 2023 there's no doubt in my mind Tkachuk would've won the MVP.

He's a damn good GM and I think with him we probably have a Cup by now instead of the stupid also ran Hockey Canada buddy club.

Speaking of that...remember when people were saying that trade was Calgary getting two top6 players for free? haha

I guess good lucks Yotes-Not-Yotes, I'm sure the push to finish 10th instead of 12th will be very exciting.

They're only 4 points out and there's a few games before the deadline. I don't think teams should sell if they're within 4 points of a playoff spot at the deadline, especially younger teams like Utah. Not enough time to really tank anyway.

I dunno. Utah started the season as the 3rd youngest team in the league. Brand new market after being a perennial cheap, cap dump poverty franchise forever. Makes sense for this franchise to finally show some effort to make competitive strides.

This is not really true, he has lost the scoring title to Kucherov and Draisaitl before. He lost a Hart to Taylor freaking Hall.

The gap between any one player and other great players in the league is not what it once was.

If you want to see a decline in your 20s go look at Ovechkin, lol. And he's still ticking along here at age 39.
The season he lost it to Drai was the year after he wrecked his knee. He has never been Mario/Gretz level of separation compared to his peers except for his 64 goal season, but there has typically been separation.

Yup, they gain very little by waving the white flag on the season. I suspect the Blues might be the same for those pining for Binnington.

They are in different development phases as organizations. Utah is early life cycle emerging out of extended rebuild. Cupboards are stacked with prospects and picks to leverage their future growth. St. Louis has been pivoting out of a late stage post Cup organization into a reset middle phase competitive build one. They're attempting this through strong draft and development and exploiting shitty cap and asset management of another organization. They want to continue to pivot away from some of their remaining older players (30+ defenders all with no trade protection) and other positional areas, but it will require the market to reach their prices. No need to sell low.
