I think about this a lot.. like we traded a 1st for Henrique last year. What if we traded two 1sts? Would we have got a real solution with term? Probably! And there’s a good chance that pick is just another Bourgault or Schaefer.

If they have term like Ekholm it is kind of a move for the future rather than just a short term rental.
I still like that trade.

I wouldn't be surprised if whoever gets him looks like a genius in a year or so. Buffalo tends to give good players away, and you can run him all next year too, before his buyout cost goes up from a measly 1.18. So basically a season and a half test run of a big RHC that has scored 30 goals, with minimal downside if you can't turf him if he doesn't work out.

Unfortunately, I don't think we have the pieces to make it work. Buffalo probably doesn't want picks/Prospects at this point. Also I don't think this management group is keen on a reclamation project that would tie up that much cap space.

I would be a fan of the move, depending on cost.
Even Buffalo's management given this amount of time has figured out that moving Cozy is not very astute unless they get alot more....
Maybe they move Tuch....for a player and another in development.

The Oilers can fit him in. Next year cap is 95M minimum. This year we can move Arvid and keep Kane on LTIR the rest of the season. We got 9M. Cozens makes 7.1M

Is there a rumour that he's available? Or are you saying there's rumour that he's available?

If he's available, to me I'd drool over that even more than Rantanen. That's our elite 1G for years. I just don't see why the Isles would do it.

Just piggy backing off a speculation thread on mains. If Isles continue to flounder, could see them selling off and retooling. It is probably pretty rare, but fingers crossed that Bowman would at least take a shot at it.

I didn't say anything about fitting his cap, aside from the bit about management not wanting to use most of their capspace on that player. I know they could make it work, but I don't think they want to. They obviously don't value youth, judging by their moves this offseason; so why would they use most of their capspace on a guy that isn't close to a sure thing and is 24?

Their moves this past offseason scream "win now", and I don't think Cozens is that in their eyes. I personally think it could work out great, but I doubt management agrees.

It wasn’t so much the trade- it was the overpayment. Servalli was talking about this too. The Oilers were the only team to give up their 1st in a trade last deadline. Better players were moved for less. As we we have seen this year- Verbeek is a GM easily squeezed- it’s hilarious he squeezed Holland

I find this distressing. The Oilers made critical roster decisions based on their ultimate goal of accruing cap space for a deadline acquisition. Can it really be that they used that space on Klingberg and the Savoie call-up?
And Kapanen. They can easily put Kapanen on waivers again and trade Klingberg. Both were low risk acquisitions

Bouch+ Stu+ Cap Dump for Sorokin+ Dobson

Come on senile Lou, you know you want to
I've definitely thought that there may be an outside chance of Sorokin. Isles are on a downwards trend.

Leave Dobson and Bouch out of it, IMO. I'd rather stick with Bouch despite the recent struggles.

iirc, private models also rate Sorokin even higher as I guess isles defensive metrics are even worse than public models suggest. There is not much I wouldn't give up to get a goalie like this.

They could pretty easily manufacture space if needed. But they were never going to be able to accrue $8-9M in actual space. This would always have been a combination of accrual and retention even with Kane not on LTIR.

I like Vejmelka the most for a goaltending target.

Easiest to get, hasn't performed worse than the others, shouldn't require more than a mediocre draft pick, and comes with no or little cap increase freeing us up to add the defender the team also needs.
He's by far the highest risk of any of the candidates available. No track record of success, late bloomer, pending UFA, playing in a low pressure environment on that a team that's just happy to be playing meaningful games on the back half of the schedule, even the career best season he is having isn't all that impressive.

These types of guys pop up every few years and get a few teams interested(Husso and Korpisalo, even Campbell kind of qualifies as some recent examples), they rarely pan out and usually fall back to irrelevancy by the next season after someone bets on them.
