Rumor: R&P Thread | Oilers Sign G Samuel Jonsson (3-Years ELC), RW Quinn Hutson (2-Years, $875k AAV), LD Atro Leppanen (1-Year, $975k)

The decisions the organization has made this year have set the team back significantly, JJ and Bowman are likely the last front office we get in McDrai's prime, and they have had an unbelievably bad start that will take years to recover from. It seems all of Drai, Frederic, and now Ekholm were rushed back and all were re-injured. This is decade of darkness level incompetence we're seeing right now.
The rot's still there, McDavid just overshadows it with how good he is.

There might not be anywhere to hide for the dinosaurs if this team fails to win a playoff round.

I think his point is more that this faith in Jonsson is unjustified, especially since where he's at in this stage of his development doesn't compare favorably to Swedish goalies currently in the NHL.
This reminds me of Savoie getting dumped on for not being in the AHL. You can only do your best with the opportunity provided.

But we've seen plenty of NHL players follow the same path as Savoie. I'm just asking people to pump the brakes on getting too invested in the guy until he's better tested. That said...

If you're good enough to potentially play in the NHL one day, then wouldn't you attract more opportunities in a weaker minor league like the SHL, especially when every Swedish goalie currently in the NHL received better opportunities at his age (or went to North America instead)?

Scratch everyone for the remaining games and forfeit them.

I don’t care about the integrity of the league, it’s not like the league itself cares about it either.
Avs are sitting basically every key player in their game today against LA. We should be doing the same, we aren't catching LA.

Don’t you think that you are a bit over thinking a player who just turned 21 playing a season in a league he was clearly way too good for?
Clearly way too good for? He had the best stats in his league but wasn’t even played the most on his team.
It's very rare for teenage goaltenders to play and start in the Swedish Elite League. I think Wallstedt is the picture boy of that and he was accordingly an NHL first round draft pick and #1 goaltender in his draft class.

The inherent challenge of this position is only one guy ices in a game. So they need to get reps to build their game and experience. In North America terms, it's why the ECHL is a reasonable development starting point for goalies versus stigmatizing their assignment to a lower pro league. Play, compete, grow, and develop.

Jonsson playing big games against pro competition and excelling in a tandem pairing with an age 32 teammate is a really big deal.
Is it that rare?
12 Swedish goalies in the NHL this year.
Every single one has played 20+ SHL games at the same age/stage of development as Jonsson. If Jonsson just finished his 19 year old season sure, but it was his 21 year old season, not a teen anymore.

Filip Gustavsson was playing Hockey Allsvenskan at a similar age and had weaker numbers than Jonsson.
