Rumor: R&P Thread | Oilers Sign G Samuel Jonsson (3-Years ELC), RW Quinn Hutson (2-Years, $875k AAV), LD Atro Leppanen (1-Year, $975k)

Curious to see what the plan is for depth goal tending next year.

Brochu has looked good, and I'd like to see more with him. I'd also ideally give Day and Jonsson as many starts as possible, regardless of where that is.

If it were up to me, I'd 1) leave Jonsson in Sweden for one more year, and let him build on his success from this year by playing in the SHL; 2) let Day be the go-to starter in the ECHL, and 3) have Brochu split starts in the AHL with a vet.

Though what I think is going to happen is they'll let Rod, Delia, and Brochu all walk; sign a vet AHL starter (similar to Pickard), and then have Day and Jonsson compete for AHL backup/ECHL starter spots.

Interesting Look at our forward group for next year without even touching on potential trades our July 1 free agents.

Locks:
McDavid
Draisaitl
Hyman
RNH
Podkolzin

Signed Vets:
(no guarantee they return, but listed in order of most likely)

Arvidsson (I'd be shocked if he wasn't back - but could be a cap casualty if we go big fish hunting)
Janmark
Henrique
Kane

Signed Prospects/Euros:
(listed in order of most likely to crack opening night roster)

Savoie
Hutson
Philp
Tomasek
Beryozkin (assuming he signs)

Then you have Frederick and Perry who could both come back. Perry I have time for until he proves me wrong on a cheap deal again.

It really shrouds a lot of mystery over next years opening night roster.

For those hoping for a change in D, I don't see it unless we are upgrading Emberson.
I'm confident something will happen in goal this summer.

I've laid out the details abit differently as a depth chart.

XX - McDavid - Hyman
(Kane) - Draisaitl - Arvidsson
Podkolzen - Nugent Hopkins - XX
Janmark - Henrique - XX

Forwards
  • Buy-Out: Kane ($4 million real dollars vs. $5,125,000 cap hit. Buy out creates cap space of year 1 $2,666,667 and cap hit in year 2 of $-1,333,333)
  • Free Agent: Frederic tbd (top 6 wing); Brown (4th line wing); Perry (utility wing); other proven top 6 maybe
  • Internal Growth: Savoie top 6 wing; Tomasek top 9 wing/centre
  • Farm Development: Beryozkin tbd, Hutson
On defense, they'll need to re-sign Emberson. Personally I don't see Emberson having 2RD upside without offensive production. They likely want another NHL d-man as well given the age and recent injury situation of this team.

Goaltending will be a question mark answered by this playoffs. I think that might require finally dealing for a #1 upgrade. (Guy I think could be a wildcard situation is a Swayman/Skinner+ swap similar to the Ullmark Ottawa trade. I think there's a window that Swayman can be available given the contract scrap and off year with no training camp. Risky move but potential buy-low upper tier goaltender).

You don't think Pickard will be back? Because otherwise you're forgetting Rodrigue.

That’s the scenario I’m hoping for. Either way both teams will be first round fodder.

Flames will most likely make it.
They will beat the sharks, the golden knights will lose because they would rather play the flames than the blues.
The kings will be resting players.
Flames will squeeze in.

Swayman would be a nice add and he's signed long term, but the Oilers may go hunting for other signed goalies like Saros or Binnington, and although Binnington has a M-NTC with a 14 team no trade list for the upcoming year, Saros has none so he could be easier to get but expensive and signed long term at $7.7/per starting next year. :dunno:

Far from it.
If it isn’t the primary or premier league (which would be the top league) it stands that it would be the/a non primary, ergo, minor league.

Call it second tier if that makes
More sense to you. The second tier pro league in NA is the AHL it’s called the minor league.

Saros is an interesting one. I can't imagine Trotz entertaining the idea of dealing him after choosing him over Askarov and signing him to the extension with no decent goalie in the pipeline to take the role.
With last summer's contracts, Trotz also put himself in a position that he can't just tear it down now either. He's in a win-now mode whether he likes it or not and whether Nashville wins or not.

With that being said, Saros would be a bet I'd take as a 29-year old with a 3-year extension. I just don't see it.

Swayman might be the best option for a #1 we could realistically aim for.

For a guy who was such a consistent and calm coach Trotz has been very erratic as a GM. Frankly, I have no idea what he might do, which is actually a good thing. The Preds have a core that is aging rapidly. They may be in a win now mode but there is not a lot of reason to believe that they can do much better than squeak into a playoff spot over the next few years,

Saros is 29 with a long deal that end in 2033 (not a three year extension) and a full NMC that will give him full say in where he plays. He may not want to play out his career with two to three years of trying to scrape by followed by 4-5 in a complete rebuild.

I would do filthy, horrible things to get Saros on the Oilers. Things that even @Cloned and @tardigrade81 would be embarrassed of. Truly depraved stuff lol :naughty:

Hopefully Bowman throws the kitchen sink at Trotz and keeps adding until he says ok.

I’m not sure if going big name hunting for a goalie will be the best move. We could very well “Campbell” ourselves yet again as goalies are voodoo. I’d rather take a stab at an up and coming goalie. I’m looking at San Jose again and they have Askarov and Romanov. I’m not sure how pleased Askarov is at this point as the whole point of him leaving the Preds was to get more starts at the NHL level. Hasn’t really come to fruition despite excellent numbers on the farm.
As for Romanov, If you look at Romanov’s stats, they look pretty underwhelming but if you omit his first 3 games (where he was finding his footing in the NHL) he has been quite solid for his team. He is only 25 so he’s pretty much at that age where he’s coming into his own as a goalie.
Could both of these goalies not work out here? Of course. With that being said, I would rather make a 1-2 million dollar mistake though as opposed to a 7 million dollar one.

I would do them to you too buddy!

I mean with you!!!!

I mean... To people. To get Saros. Is what....I meant!

Saros would be awesome !

Is it hot in here.......

If that is true and Frederic can't go, we will be so soft in the playoffs.

We are soft now so at least nothing changes. Whenever I see the Charmin commercials with the cartoon baby bear with toilet paper stuck all over his ass I think of this team and our soft as butter coach.

Won't disagree with the assessments, but no more buyouts please. Just finishing up the remnants of the Lucic fiasco (Neal), and then another 3 years of Campbell pain to the tune of over 6 million, on a team that needs all the precious cap space it can get.

I hope Kane ramps it up and can play as a mid 6 body. A bit high priced at that level, but might be more effective than buying him out, incurring that cost + whoever you replace him with. Barring that, do you think he could be moved? What would the sweetener be to do that?

Ottawa is a shining example of how a team can go from wandering the desert to finally making the dance and being a legit threat, by acquiring a good goalie. I think Buffalo should do the same thing instead of shuffling other deck chairs all the time. As for us, it will be same old.......

Hey you two, keep the bedroom sex talk to a minimum please! This is a family religious forum!

Edit: But if you think that whatever you do will get us Saros, then please proceed with the sites blessing.

More of a shooter.

What I don't get is we why are burning ELC unless they think he's a better top six option than we have. lol Maybe this is just what it took to sign him, which is ok

Giving college kids guaranteed spots during a cup window is pretty clown world. Nothing against Hutson, but our roster is really that bad and the injury situation must be dire.
Sorry but giving the kid a few games before playoffs is a clown show? You do know he can't play with Edmonton in the playoffs right?

You don't think Pickard will be back? Because otherwise you're forgetting Rodrigue.

Yeah, I think they'll move on from Rod regardless. He's RFA, so I doubt he's qualified.

Sure he's had good numbers in the past, but I can't think of any 24 year olds who put up a sub 900 SV% in the AHL and still went on to have an NHL career of note.

I think these playoffs will determine which one of Skinner or Pickard is kept. Regardless, I think there will be a new 1A in Edmonton next fall unless Skinner manages to find a new level of consistency this postseason.
