Rumor: R&P Thread | Oilers Sign G Samuel Jonsson (3-Years ELC), RW Quinn Hutson (2-Years, $875k AAV), LD Atro Leppanen (1-Year, $975k)

Yup, I was being a big cheeky. Though I think Savoie has much more utility in his game including a good shot though greater strength is a distributor.

I don't put too much stock over the rumoured burn year on a multi-year entry level deal. Likely needed to secure the deal in the overhyped NCAA free agency cycle. If that gets the kid on a plane for a last minute twirl in game 82 or simply a press box ride through the playoffs, that's okay as a cost of doing business, imo. They frankly need to close the NCAA draft loophole and equalize draft rights across all leagues.

Now I'd be more concerned if this organization fast tracked the shiny new signing over Savoie who put the grind in as their pedigree prospect as a first year pro. But I don't think that will happen.

Free stuff. Urgent need to build up this scorched prospect pool.
I think we will see both of them play in the last few games.

Oilers are likely going to rest key guys for the last two games.

I know they are saying that Hutson will report to Edmonton and might play this week, but can he actually play for us this year? I thought you had to be signed before the TDL in order to play or how does that work?

Also I will not be surprised if they retroactively put Ekholm on LTIR and activate Kane.

EDIT: I forgot he played a minute. Never mind.

I'd have zero problem with that. Give some energy for meaningless games while resting peeps. Not sure how the recall situation works with Bako and the hoops Oil have had to go through with cap, shortened line-ups due to emergency recall considerations of the cap.

But adding no cost skill to the organization is where they are at. Pump money and hope to find NHL supporting cast members.

What I don't get is we why are burning ELC unless they think he's a better top six option than we have. lol Maybe this is just what it took to sign him, which is ok

Giving college kids guaranteed spots during a cup window is pretty clown world. Nothing against Hutson, but our roster is really that bad and the injury situation must be dire.

Burning a year is just the price of doing business. We're so low on warm bodies and cap space we can't field a full lineup. I don't think it does us any harm, it'd be a stupendous thing if next time they meet at the bargaining table Quinn Hutson has earned a raise in such short order. Could see him playing in the regular season to let others rest, and if he forces his was onto a playoff lineup, we're laughing at found money.

The most likely scenario:

- Play a game to end the regular season and burn a year on his contract.
- Skates with the black aces as he's not eligible to play for the Condors in/if the AHL playoffs.
- Spends the summer trying to be a right handed version of his brothers.
- Starts '25-'26 in Bakersfield with plenty of opportunity for career advancement.

Interesting Look at our forward group for next year without even touching on potential trades our July 1 free agents.

Locks:

McDavid
Draisaitl
Hyman
RNH
Podkolzin

Signed Vets:
(no guarantee they return, but listed in order of most likely)

Arvidsson (I'd be shocked if he wasn't back - but could be a cap casualty if we go big fish hunting)
Janmark
Henrique
Kane

Signed Prospects/Euros:
(listed in order of most likely to crack opening night roster)

Savoie
Hutson
Philp
Tomasek
Beryozkin (assuming he signs)

Then you have Frederick and Perry who could both come back. Perry I have time for until he proves me wrong on a cheap deal again.

It really shrouds a lot of mystery over next years opening night roster.

For those hoping for a change in D, I don't see it unless we are upgrading Emberson.
I'm confident something will happen in goal this summer.

It just means that STL can offer sheet him a year sooner.

I have no issue with it whatsoever. If we didn't another team would. If that's what it takes to add a young potential top 6 forward without giving up assets then you do it without thinking twice.

Don't think there's anything retroactive they could do. Today would be the first day he could go on LTIR, as he played last night.

Darn shadow edit, here I wanted to be smug on the interwebs

He's also signed next season so I expect an overhaul of the support forward group this offseason and for some youth to be injected into the lineup which is exactly what should have been done this season but I digress.
Next step is getting Beryozkin BERYOZKIN @Cloned signed.

Unless I'm mistaken, since he wasn't on our reserve list at the deadline, he isn't eligible to play for us in the playoffs.

We're burning a year off his ELC because that is likely one of the stipulations to agree to a contract with us. Pretty common for players coming out of college to burn off a year of their ELC at the end of NHL seasons.

Don’t worry, you’ve still succeeded at that. ;)

It’s probably one of the reasons he agreed to sign with us. If we didn’t agree to burn a year he very likely might have signed with someone else who would.

I see several people beat me to it.

If Hutson earns himself a big deal after just 1 year as a pro, thats a good problem to have.
