Rumor: R&P Thread | Oilers Sign G Samuel Jonsson (3-Years ELC), RW Quinn Hutson (2-Years, $875k AAV), LD Atro Leppanen (1-Year, $975k)

Ya, the bolded is really hyperbolic. Would bet you anything they clinch earlier next year than they did this year. Shit tending and injuries have added up this year in a big way.

You're saying the guy who predicted McDavid would struggle to hit 15-20 goals a year, isn't great at predictions??? :sarcasm:

Scouting report on Hutson?

A give a go to the net or slip into open space kind of winger. Ran the umbrella with either of his brothers and Celebrini/Eiserman the last couple seasons on the PP and grew to become dangerous to score anywhere on that formation. Was hard to imagine BU being as good as the Macklin Celebrini & Lane Hutson season but it turned into the Cole Hutson, Cole Eiserman, and Quinn Hutson show in the second half of this year. Without looking, probably has as many points as Lachance & Copponi combined.

With all of these signings, as well as Savoie making the jump next year, I do wonder if we see an exit of some vets this summer and have these cheap contracts come in so we can do some big game hunting this summer.
They're going to have to spend their way out of their problems. Both an anemic pipeline and on the NHL roster. Thankfully there's a three year cycle of big cap jumps that will help. And the Oilers are one of the top revenue driver so the capacity (and urgency) is there.

Sounds like Quinn has a lot of experience playing with elite skill. And if he is actually really good at getting open and shooting fast he’s filling a need. Feels like we’ve been missing guys that can find those soft spots and get open for a pass, McDrai are so good at passing but their options suck a lot of the time.

Think you just described Matt Savoie!!

I know it's not in fashion at the moment to show positivity, but if guys like Savoie and Hutson develop into key offensive roles, the outlook of the forwards really changes next year.
I'm reasonably optimistic for Savoie. He's been a top player and prospect at every level. Certainly open minded about Hutson, though I do think NCAA undrafted guys tend to be overhyped and not live up to the free agency ticket. The Oilers need to look for nickels under every seat cushion. Take every free shot possible to add organizational depth.

The NHL roster mix will be interesting. Not sure how many small, slight wingers this team will want to carry. Appreciate and respect your positivity for sure. Great thing is this organization has the franchise setting elite pieces in place.

In regards to small players, a few cheaper guys like this might also allow us to take on Frederick after this year for some toughness in the lineup.

More of a shooter.

What I don't get is we why are burning ELC unless they think he's a better top six option than we have. lol Maybe this is just what it took to sign him, which is ok

Giving college kids guaranteed spots during a cup window is pretty clown world. Nothing against Hutson, but our roster is really that bad and the injury situation must be dire.

I don't know what they have with Frederic but I liked his short 7 minutes in LA and aggressive, hard ice power forward type for this roster construction. Want to see him play with McDavid or Draisaitl. But as I've posted in the Frederic thread there's so much we don't know about the player and his priorities going into UFA.

Regarding next year, Savoie will be a no brainer. Hutson is going to have to prove ability to play at pro speeds, physical and heavy pro game, and apex competition. I'm guessing that will mean farm time despite the entry level deal and one-year burn to lock down the signing.

There's alot riding on this playoff in terms of how this roster is constructed beyond the core building blocks.

This. Speaks to the hole the org finds itself in, with respect to injuries and organizational depth.

Pathetic.

Safe to say it's probably mostly this. The Oil also don't have spare bodies up front, so no harm letting him sit in the PB for a week, maybe play vs. the Sharks, and then enjoy the playoff atmosphere.

I can imagine the Oilers being a very attractive organisation for skilled winger free agents like Hutson.

Having 2 of the best centers in the NHL with only 2-3 wingers to realistically compete against for a top-6 slot to play next to one of them.

Yup, I was being a big cheeky. Though I think Savoie has much more utility in his game including a good shot though greater strength is a distributor.

I don't put too much stock over the rumoured burn year on a multi-year entry level deal. Likely needed to secure the deal in the overhyped NCAA free agency cycle. If that gets the kid on a plane for a last minute twirl in game 82 or simply a press box ride through the playoffs, that's okay as a cost of doing business, imo. They frankly need to close the NCAA draft loophole and equalize draft rights across all leagues.

Now I'd be more concerned if this organization fast tracked the shiny new signing over Savoie who put the grind in as their pedigree prospect as a first year pro. But I don't think that will happen.

Free stuff. Urgent need to build up this scorched prospect pool.
