If a player makes less than the amount that can be removed from the salary cap by sending them to Bakersfield, the actual dollar amount doesn't matter for what the Oilers are trying to accomplish (i.e., ice a competitive team that accrues as much cap space as possible over the season).

it's also possible we replaced a good bottom pairing D in Vinny with a bad bottom pairing D in Brown. Money is important, but it's not worthwhile if we're looking at an overall downgrade. I think Emberson can replace Ceci well enough, but Brown has a lot to do to show he can fill Vinny's skates
I don't think Oilers chose to sign Brown instead of Desharnais for cap savings alone. They obviously didn't trust VD and likely identified Brown as a cheaper upgrade over him.

Oilers targeted Brown early and locked him up for 3 yrs.. they think of him as much more than a 'bad 3rd pairing Dman' .
Time will tell if they were onto anything or if hfoil GMs know better.

It's just for waiver issues, they intend to use Brown like a 7/8D, but having term on his deal gives them a little more assurance that teams won't pick him up off waivers.

I keep seeing people say this, yet I keep seeing Brown being the guy paired with Kulak at training camp.

actually they're paying Brown more than they paid Vinny last year.

But last year is irrelevant. Vinny makes double Brown this year

Exactly. Anything like 1.15 or less basically only matters to Katz’s wallet

I think the plan is more 6/7. Going off the contract dollar figure, he’s clearly supposed to play at least until we can get an upgrade later in the year. But the term, combined with the touch higher cap, definitely makes him near waiver proof which is helpful for stashing him as a depth dman if we improve enough

He was signed pre-offer sheets. Once that happened I think the team pivoted to moving Ceci out instead of keeping him for now and choosing to acrue cap space for the deadline.

So now they have basically two avenues of a deadline upgrade ... the acruing cap and/or using Kane's LTIR.

So that has moved Brown up a bit.

I honestly would have preferred having TDA as an option though at league min. Ignoring this past season's results, him playing mid pair minutes show him being a strong even strength producer.

And when he plays on teams that aren't complete dumpster fires, those defensive lapses that he's known for don't really show up on the statsheet at end of the year.

His personality is probably too much of a headache, why not just have thrown a contract at Barrie then or Schultz.

I don't see that not being an option, but at this point in their respective careers, I have DeAngelo ahead of all of Barrie, Schultz and Shattenkirk. He even has more of a physical game.

But you're most likely right. DeAngelo's personality is the obvious reason why he's run out of options in the NHL. I just think that this locker room is quite a bit louder than his ego. Especially when Corey Perry is still here.

Maybe but maybe not. Josh Brown was one of first free agent signings on July 1.. they clearly wanted him to replace VD and not to move between AHL/NHL.
The guy played almost 60NHL games last season.

Yup. I wanted to see him in training camp as well. Probabky would have come with only a PTO offer. His upside is way better than Brown’s, and potentially equal or greater to Emberson at this point. As for his political leanings and clubhouse demeanour, if that couldn’t be managed then this group isn’t as tight and strong as they suggest they are. Lots of old veterans to ride herd on someone who’s not playing nice in the sandbox.

Yeah and he might play 60 this year or he might play 20. The extra term means he will be able to be a contract that can be buried without getting picked up. You’re right that they have a role in mind but I think they are fine with him being a 7-8 guy.

Honestly some people (me) are just mad that Brown seems to be getting every opportunity over Stetcher and Gleason. Really liked Stetcher's game last season, much rather have him getting the first crack at the 3RD spot.
What opportunity is that? Preseason games? Please...don't say that like it matters.

Oilers essentially pre-purchased their trade deadline d-depth with the Brown and Stetcher signings. With x3 and x2 term these contracts are basically poison pills to prevent waiver claims and low aav which enables burial in Bako if/when the roster is upgraded.

Come trade deadline the Oil will be able to burn their limited trade collateral on roster upgrade at 2RD and salary retention, potentially double retention. Maybe stretch resources for a second roster tweak.

I see Philly is trying to sneak Ronnie Attard through waivers early.

He's a rightie I was eying as a potential claim if all else failed. Kind of Brent Burns-esque. 6'3'' 210lbs, athletic, rangy offensive risk-taker and has a nuclear weapon for a shot.
Love it. What's the worst that can happen? You put him back on waivers and he gets claimed or you gain a solid AHL D?

The right side bubble guys could use a little message sent. I know it's early in preseason, but they've all sucked.

Emberson was OK, but I would much rather have him play as a 6 than a 4.

I guess we'll see. Kalle Larsson must know him well from the USHL and Rick Pracey was scouting with Philly when they drafted him.

Meh, screw him for all the cheap shots and late hits he has dished out on our stars.

My biggest grudge with him is how he let little toddler Tkachuk turn him into his $@#&. Never did anything back to him aside from chirp. Lost respect for the Doughboy the more he turned into Matthew's punching bag.

and he's at least twice as good. The net savings are there from dealing Ceci.

Given how everything shook out this summer, I wonder if Vinny would have stayed for 1.5 million instead of signing with the Vancouver Demkos

It *should* matter though. Especially to a guy like Josh Brown, who is nowhere near good enough to coast through preseason like he has been.

Stecher at least has the excuse of coming off of surgery.

I would agree that Brown is a downgrade for Desharnais, and even that Emberson is a downgrade on Ceci.

I still say how it shook out is for the best just because the idea is that we are prepping to finally add that 2nd pair RD. If we make that deal then we see Emberson fall to a #6 and Brown to a #7 or lower

I'll believe it when I see it. Bowman is now the third guy to take on that particular challenge.

That's definitely true but I still say that it's the right move to at least create the opening that allows a move to happen.

The danger of course is that we become so desperate for a move that we will settle for a gamble. The last time we stuck our neck out like that was for Campbell.

So hopefully we do land the guy we really want and not plan C
