Rule change to team icing the puck while their goaltender is pulled

I’ve never really thought about it so I’m not saying it needs to happen but is interesting to think/talk about.

Late in the Stars vs Preds game tonight on TNT Nashville was down by a goal and had 6 skaters and iced the puck. One of the announcers brought up how Saros was able to jump back on the ice even though it was an icing; of course they had mentioned how it was an exception to the rule.

Again just curious as to what other fans of hockey think about it; I’d say myself the six skaters have to stay on the ice and the goaltender isn’t allowed to be put back in.

The team that iced the puck should have to play without a goalie for the remainder of the calendar month. It's a clause on that stupid f***ing rule about getting a penalty for challenging a play.
Great take, thank you.

edit - I agree and think a team should be allowed one challenge without a penalty; after that then yeah they get a 2 minute penalty on a fail though.

After any whistle you should be able to keep your goalie in, or pull them as far as I'm concerned. Why would you want a rule that takes the fun out of watching? In the last few minutes, down a goal, it's entertaining to watch.

Smiles smugly as once again my 'no before opening' theory works out...

All this rule would do is either eliminate pulling the goalie for an extra attacker (reducing the chance of the losing team coming back) or essentially lock in the win for the team that's leading (assuming that that team is going to win the faceoff 50% of the time & then quickly score, say, 75% of the time after that (against a non goalie trying to guard the net). As a fan I'd rather watch the chaos of the losing team trying everything to tie the game & go to OT. Does it always work, of course not (often there's an ENG), but it would work a lot more often than with this change, seemingly just for change's sake as nobody else seems to have a vocal problem with the way things are on the rare time it comes up.

I think it's actually a good idea. Why allow a team to put a goalie back in when icing the puck with 6 skaters?

Doesn't make sense. The team icing the puck isn't trying to ice the puck. There is no advantage for them doing so. And they are already disadvantaged by having to put the goalie back in and faceoff in their own zone.

For the 5 or 10 times this happens per year, it's not something that needs tweaking.

Why stop there for such a minor occurance?

Let's make it a rule that after 10 rounds of shoot outs, goalies have to switch ends.

Because of injuries it will never change. Imagine the team with 5 wins the faceoff straight back to a Webber like shooter. He steps into a bomb. That extra 6th man would be standing in the net trying to keep the puck out to have a chance to tie the game ...... its a recipe for disaster

Sounds like it's not broken but let's break it so we can botch fixing it.

And offside should no longer be challenged. If the ref misses an offside call, it generally means it was so close that it shouldn't matter.

That's why there's a penalty if they're not correct. They won't use it if they feel they don't have a chance. And there are times where it's not even remotely close at all and they call it on side. Remember, the linesman is always on one side or the other with players crossing over in front of his view all the time.

There's nothing wrong with the rule. It has helped/hurt everyone.

If they are wrong they get accessed a 2 minute penalty. Are you also unhappy with that?

A goal and a 2 minute PP.

There's bigger fish to fry.

Edit: Thread about icing while goalie is pulled. I'm down for that, keeping the goalie pulled.

I expect the goalie exemption is there to encourage teams to pull the goalie, it's exciting at both ends of the ice when the goalie is off the ice. Not allowing a goalie to come back on during icings would mean teams would do it a lot less.

Both times it happens each year, I wonder if a team that has a player without a stick ices the puck if that player should be forced to start at the draw without getting a replacement.

Then I get distracted and stop caring.

Instead of having less players on the ice in over time, how about more!

Every minute into OT, another skater is allowed on the ice.

When we are out of players, we add pucks.

This should pretty much be the end thread right here.
