His shot will need to continue to develop as the velocity is average for his age. However, when he shoots, the puck seems to find a way through on goal. As Ty shoots the puck more, the penalty killers in front of him will be forced to respect the shooting lanes rather than assume Murchison will keep the puck moving. Ty walks along the blue line very well and often uses this to his advantage to keep the play alive and change the angle for a pass or shot attempt. “Ty Murchison showed good awareness in his own zone, noticing a player slip behind his partner. He realizes this is happening and forces the player into the boards, leading to a turnover. Later on that shift, he gets caught into defending a 3-on-1 and looks a bit like a deer in the headlights. Trying to defend the pass, he doesn’t rush to the pass recipient once the pass is complete, giving the opponent a clear lane to the net. I’d like to see him react faster in this moment. He doesn’t have a very low defensive stance, keeping his ankles fairly straight with no flex. I’d like to see more bend so he can increase his defensive circle. Murchison does this well on the rush, but not against the cycle. He carries the puck well under pressure, knowing how to put his body between the attacker and the puck, fighting off incoming sticks. Uses his body and strength well along the boards to pin opponents. Defends the rush well, angling out his opponents into the boards, leading with his stick before committing with the body. Every year, the ROI for later round NTDP players is awful. They never pan out.....but there's always a first! These players are only on the team because they were advanced or heavily scouted to get noticed as 16 year olds; the NTDP is scouted as much as any team year long; and the cream always seems to rise to the top in the program.

It's basically lighting picks on fire. Better off exploring overagers if you're tapping into the USHL. With how sparse the CHL games were, the Flyers are basically admitting they don't even want to gamble or deep dive. Just a bunch of lazy picks, with ample viewings and maybe organizational depth upside.

ASU is not a great place to develop as a hockey player, and yes I know they are D1, but really. If he goes to Portland at least there is a little chance. I doubt he is a real prospect though.

You can wait five years for a late round pick, which is why I prefer the college route, stash him there for a few years and see if he develops without wasting a contract slot.

I actually agree with that, just think that Portland would be slightly better than ASU. The reality is I don't think he becomes anything at ASU. Another college? Maybe, and I would definitely prefer he goes the college route if it was elsewhere.

Yeah, I actually picked up 4-5 of his games and went through his shifts. Skating is alright, but when he transitions from skating backwards to forward is when he is easily beaten. He has a hard time stopping plays within the high danger area 1-1, but is real good along the boards imo. I wouldn’t call him a bruising Dman, but any opportunity to throw a check he will likely do so. I would compare his aggressiveness to Connor Clifton.
His decision making in the Ozone is BAD. Against Green Bay, he had Jack Hughes open on the left side where the F2 in the right side was pushing the net, so the natural play is to send it to your star and let the play develop as Green Bay had 2 F up and open space within the slot. Ty brought the puck to the center blue line and tried to shoot into 5 players. Awful hockey sense and decision making. Sadly, that seemed to be the norm. He had a bunch of low danger shots without trying to at least create room for a play.

He’s ultra aggressive at closing a play which I love. He’ll attack puck carriers and will try to close gaps. He will get beat, but with some coaching and training you can knock that out.

Definitely a project prospect that will need to marinate in the AHL and NCAA. I want to see how he reacts against faster and stronger competition.

During this time he was able to play against his future teammates as the Sun Devils faced off against the U.S. National U18 team in two exhibition games in Tempe.

A native to Corona, California, Murchison spent his youth career with the Los Angeles Jr. Kings. In the 2018-2019 season in U16 he scored 14 points, four goals and 10 assists in 43 games. In the season prior he had 30 points in 52 games in Bantam AAA play. Murchison is the first California native to commit to Arizona State in the NCAA era.

With so many bigger players taken in the recent draft he is a bit of a throwback and could be a nice compliment to the smaller puck movers coming up through the Flyers' pipeline. With ASU moving up to the NCHC this year, it will be interesting to see how he does.
