I wouldn't hate that move. Maybe Anderson can pull a super savvy veteran move and "strain a groin" in practice.

Edit - KA most likely does the boring thing and sends UPL down.

The plan is to get UPL a lot of starts. The boring thing will be what they do but they will know better how Luu looks at the top of his game now.

Well I have no idea to be honest. Again, trade boards make it sound cheap, but we know how that goes, probably not reality.

I'm not sure what rangers fans want but its probably something between that and the main board saying less than a first.
What did Nuke go for? ... Of course I'm not sure Nukes age when he was dealt

I know carrying three goalies is usually a pretty dumb idea but why not as long as the skaters are pretty healthy? Tough part is if you want to carry a 7th D you need to waive Asplund or Vinny.

Maybe UPL cools down though and plays his way back to the AHL. However, I feel like sending UPL down when he is hot is not a good developmental choice, let alone for the Sabres. Good goaltending is a major boost to this club right now and It would be stupid to send down the goalie that is getting us wins for one who’s coming off injury and hasn’t proved anything yet this season.

Not really sure when Comrie is expected to be back after his conditioning stint though but there is certainly a decision to be made.

Just like how they wanted similar value for Lias Andersson. Just wait and watch that value tank too.
The level of skill is much different though.

We're still talking about a 21 year old 40 point guy. I don't think a first is a stretch to be honest

Did they put out any press release on the length of the conditioning assignment? The likely outcome is a healthy, condition stint completing Comrie comes back up and UPL goes back down to continue to get a lot of games in Rochester. That could be soon, it could be in what, 14 days?

A mid-teen-to-later first, I could see. But that's not the ask. It's akin to Andersson in that they initially wanted similar draft value and at this point Laffy doesn't hold that.

It likely gives Adams a lot of confidence having UPL and Comrie signed for next season.

I believe 14 days is the limit for a conditioning stint per the CBA but perhaps @dotcommunism would know for sure.

So here's the question: when Comrie is back up, do you waive Hino to make room? Can't send UPL down at this point. I think Hino is the more likely waiver fodder than Asplund.

on this roster…

I want to keep Hino from a depth standpoint. He’s more flexible in substitutes.

they could play roster games between him and Krebs. The days he starts Krebs gets sent down.

I saw a Rangers reporter suggest they want a 1st or a recent 1st round prospect for him.

No thanks.
The ask is too much. His ELC ends so his price will drop. See Lias.

i don’t have a problrm acquiring him. Not paying thst ask.

id do 50% Olofsson+ middle 2nd for him. Or a bigger trade of him and one of their extra prospect D.

There are alot of other options.

Trade Hino, Aspland, Olofsson, Fitz, Bryson for anything that frees up a roster spot. Any two plus a pick for a genuine roster player would be welcome as a talent concentration.

You can also send Krebs, Quinn, or Peterka down without wavers, so there may have to be a short term sacrifice there to buy time to move assets.

Or wait until UPL has one bad game and the board call for him to be jettisoned into space! :P

I'd see if KA could get something for Hino at 50% retained. Gotta think some team would love that and would give up a late rounder.
I think given how things have played out for Hino, that KA would want to do Hino this favor to maintain some reputation with league veteran players. Give the vet an opportunity to continue his career somewhere else. Its not like he was a scrub.

How do you think we should f*** with the highest scoring group in the entire league so we can find a seat for a sub .900 goaltender to not play enough?

No bad ideas.

I'm not even sure if some of those guys would get claimed on waivers let alone be packaged for a genuine roster player.

Trading a defenseman doesn't free up a roster spot, because you're still going to have to carry 7 at any given time anyways. A trade of a forward could work. Ultimately, if you're buying time, it's almost certainly UPL going down until you get space to bring him back up.

Here is how I expect it to work out:

They send UPL down when Comrie’s conditioning stint is over.

Fans lose their minds.

Comrie looks a little rusty his first couple of games back. But, the Sabres put up 5+ goals for and win both games.

Fans lose their minds some more.

Then Comrie settles in and people forget why they were ever mad.

Love Larkin but idk how I would feel about that move. We shouldn’t break up the top 6 and I would be against trading really good assets for Larkin to play on the 3rd line
I think Adams needs to focus on constructing another good line. He’s got Mittelstadt and Krebs to start. Larkin would be a huge completion of that.

And I don’t think Adams needs to trade anyone off the current roster to get a player like Larkin.

Lafreniere would be a huge add to this group. He can play a gritty game.

Would take Larkin in a heartbeat
Me as well.

I don't want to give up the ask for Larkin. I'm also scared of trading with Yzerman.
But adding him and Wood to our bottom 6 would give Granato a lot to work with.
Puljujärvi is enticing as well.

Thats not why.

We don’t have anything on the farm right now because Johnson wouldn’t sign and Laaksonen didn’t work out. We drafted very defense heavy under Botts (8 of 18 picks were dmen). Those are the draft years that should be the depth in the organization right now (like Laaksonen and Johnson).

We’ve been forward heavy for only 3 years under Adams and still drafted 5 dmen. One is on the NHL roster (Power) and 1 or 2 may be in Rochester next season. Hopefully we might have Johnson in the mix as well.

Why would a team trade us a player like that?

More importanly, why do we need to go hard to get a player like this? Our top 4 is currently very good. Its going to get exponentially better as Power and Sammy gain more experience and Power gets stronger and more physically mature. That will happen no matter who the #4 dman is.

Sammy/Power along with Dahlin are basically a cheat code for building a very good defense. Think Nieds/Pronger and Beuchemin.

Why would a team make a trade of a top 4 d man? I dunno, because you offer quality back in the form of forwards.

Our top 4 is a top 3. Look at the game today against Bruins. Three guys played 81 minutes. Bryson was in our #4. He stinks. Sorry, Jokiharju is not really doing it for me, even when he gets back. We don't have any D men in the pipeline ready for 2023-24 or maybe even 2024-25.

Johnson? He didn't sign and is a UFA soon.

The Sabres overloaded on forward depth with Savoie/Kulich/Rose/Nadeau/Poltapov looking like our best bets to make the NHL.

On D? Maybe Novikov/Lindgren make the NHL. Maybe.

It simply doesn't matter if we screwed the pooch on multiple drafts, we don't have much on D coming up.

You guys think a under the radar vet like Luke Schenn would work? Hed be a rental but I would imagine he wouldn't cost more then a mid round pick and/or mid level prospect.

Been asked a dozen times the last month or week. I think KA learned after Stahl, older vet impacts are minimal at best. I dont want to give up the Philly 2nd or our first for him either. Let some other gm overpay for him.

I can’t believe I’m still seeing people trying to send Krebs down.

what a world.
When, who ? That was weeks ago at least (not me) ?

he would cost more and would not change anything

After watching today really wish we could of gotten a player like Zacha in here (there was Sabre interest rumors). But those are the moves the top teams make/get.

We don’t need a ton of D coming. Our Top 4 is made of 23 and younger players. 5 and 6 can be filled in with trades or vet UFA signings. If you want to upgrade Joker then trade him in a package for an upgrade.
