Such a dismal start to the season means positive regression for the team. We won't be anywhere near the bottom at the end of the season. Just try and maneuver a hockey trade at the deadline.

Not necessarily. The team could just be bad. It's not like all team regress to 16th place.
If you are a bad team, and are bad again, yes. If a top scoring team can no longer score goals for half a season, you expect that to revert. Our players aren't all of a sudden unable to play hockey anymore.

I don’t think we can trade Tage or Dylan, they really are the future. Same with Dahlin and Power. The only other two I would put in the “no trade” category are Benson and Kulich.

The one I’ve been thinking about is Tuch. I hate mentioning him because he’s kind of a local and a fan but as power forwards age, their bodies break down.

I would never of entertained it, until we crapped out another season. It’s looking more realistic that any growth in this team is not happening any time soon. Plus, he’s got value. Now, I’m not trading him for picks. I’m only trading him for an up and coming version of himself. I don’t know who that guy is but that’s who I’d target from one of the contenders THIS deadline.

Well that went pretty much exactly as predicted.

I think this Chychrun news should be much more of a warning for Buffalo than an invitation.

Perhaps. Yet they can't think they can continue nothing but internal promotion at every position. They need an actual top 4 defenseman who can provide stouter d-zone and PK play while being a safety value for their more offensive partners (Dahlin or Power).

Not that Chychrun is that guy, just that ignoring trade opportunities because someone didn't work out in a specific situation is going to keep painting themselves deeper and deeper into a corner.

They only scored a lot because they were allowed to completely ignore defense, which no other team in the league is allowed to do because it leads to losing more often than not.

Once Buffalo had to play like adults with the training wheels off, they completely shit the bed. The team stinks and will positively regress from a bottom 5 team to a bottom 10 team.

He's a very similar player to Hanifin, who everyone also wants. Neither are a good fit for Buffalo, but decent defensemen are so hard to find that you really can't be choosy in the slightest if you want to sign one who can play in the top 4 and not sink your team.

Eventually, Buffalo will have to bite the bullet and sign a defenseman who isn't an ideal fit. We can afford one if we trade one of our wingers after next season (Tuch/Mitts/JJ).

We need a mature defense sooner than later, so I hope Adams has some deals in the works if he isn't going after one of these two, who I don't even really like.

Chychrun again anyone ?

Damn. It likely would've played out the same way here. A big problem I noticed with the team while I was still watching them was the forwards being completely inept at putting forth the effort and focus it takes to win in this league.

I don't think Chychrun moves the needle enough. I'm enamored by Benson's potential. We dodged a bullet there.

The dream is still calgary blowing up and us getting Andersson right?
Andersson, while a good defenseman, is kinda sorta more of the same. Smooth-skating, non-physical, relies on positioning.

Weegar is the guy from Calgary to target.....but he ain't waiving to come here.
I'll gladly take Roy in UFA...if things like that could ever happen.

Oh, absolutely agree. I think the big argument last TLD that this reinforced was that the cost to acquire vs length of control has to be a top factor.

Chychrun was never a good target because he was always a risk to walk in two seasons and a large portion of his value increasing his cost to acquire was his contract savings which aren't even really a factor for this Buffalo team as his deal is up and he will require a big extension exactly when this team is going to need extra cap space the most.

With Hanifin, at least they could work out an extension before a deal (for the record, I do not want Hanifin and his upcoming new contract), whereas Chychrun was always going to be a huge gamble for any small market team to take.

This team only recently actually plays defense. You watch, they will be fighting for a playoff spot.

15. No team has been more disappointing this season than the Buffalo Sabres and it stems entirely from the team changing its entire identity. In an effort to be a stronger defensive team, the Sabres have completely neutered their offense and the results have been dire.

That’s clear to see when watching them — they’re a shade of the chaotic rush team from last season. And it shows in data tracked by Corey Sznajder.

Last year, the Sabres had 12.5 entries that led to chances per 60, the third-highest mark in the league. Sure, they gave up a lot (12.1, fifth most in the league), but they came out ahead. This year they’ve cleaned up the chances against dramatically (8.4 per 60!) but at an incredible cost to their offense. This year they’ve only generated 8.9 entries leading to chances per 60, a bottom-five mark.

A whole lot of work for the exact same difference means even less when the team just doesn’t have the right personnel for the change.

16. That shows in how little the team’s top stars are contributing to scoring chances this year at five-on-five (scoring chances plus scoring chance assists). Alex Tuch (12.2 scoring chance contributions per 60), Tage Thompson (11.1), Jeff Skinner (10.8) and Dylan Cozens (9.5) all earned over nine last season. This year only Tuch is above that mark.

PLAYER
SCC PER 60
Alex Tuch11.3
Jeff Skinner8.8
Tage Thompson7.9
Dylan Cozens7.7
All four veer toward rush specialists and when those opportunities dry up due to a safer style, so too does the team’s offense.

Maybe one day we’ll see Buffalo’s best of both worlds as the team’s talent continues to grow. Right now it just seems as if the Sabres aren’t being themselves — and paying the price for it.

I doubt that very much. Not that I am advocating for Chychrun but their family is very good friends with the Pegulas and I think I read Chychrun grew up going to school with one of the Pegula kids. I thought we would have drafted him but we got Nylander instead.

You're treating Buffalo like they have been a top scoring team for years. They had one good year of scoring, with many players having career years at once. They are showing themselves to be exactly what they have been for years, and that's a below average scoring team.

One could say they have never really knew how to play hockey in the first place, as in having a complete game where they had to participate on the defensive side of the game as well.

If playing in front of his family has lost it's shine because of losing, I am certain that playing for the Pegulas would lose it's shine quicker due to losing.

claims people make that can't be proven for 500 Alex.

Gotta start assembling talent to make the team better sooner or later.

Chychrun instead of Erik Johnson on this team does make a difference.

Of course it can't be proven.

But, what is more important to you? Your family or people you went to HS with?

If it's not your family, I feel sorry for you.
