It seems like Wahlstrom’s injury was a long time ago, but for Wally it’s only been 59 games(he has 10 points jn that time span). We saw how long it took Lee to get his game back after an ACL tear. Over the last -5 games has probably been some of Wahlstrom’s best hockey post-injury.

Why not give him more time? It’s not like we don’t have other struggling bottom-six forwards.

If nobody claims him tomorrow he’ll get his time in the AHL. And since Wahlstom’s on a 1 year contract he’ll really need to start showing signs that he knows how to play the game at a lower level before another team gives him a chamce.

I'm sure there's stuff behind the scenes that may explain this decision, maybe they need every penny of cap saved, or maybe it's loyalty to previously core guys like Martin or a coach's kid like Maclean, but I have seen nothing to suggest Martin or Maclean bring more to the lineup than Wahlstrom or Engvall. To be clear, none of those four bring much of anything and choosing these two over the other two will basically have no impact on the ice. but I do think there is a remote chance some other team will claim Wahlstrom or Engvall and no chance a team would claim either Martin or Maclean. Maybe that's why they made this decision.

Gross was saying the team sees Martin as a leader (Lou too, probably), that’s why I’d guess he stayed instead of Wahlstrom. Costs a little less as well.

Whalstrom? Maybe someone takes a flier on him, short term commitment.
Nobody is touching Engvall with that contract. Thank God Lou isn’t allowed to waive him and claim him at the same time.

Martin and McLean bring low cap hits to the table, a very important factor with players returning from injury. They are fourth line/spot start fodder.

Fourth line has not been the problem. Special teams kill them. That top six should be able to have a functioning power play

And the bottom 6 should have 4 competent penalty killers, we have neither

The difference between Wally and Engvall vs Fasching on salary is the amount needed to get Barzal and Pelech on the roster. George will be sent down when Duclair is ready. Can't make it work otherwise without someone like Casey getting dealt.
