2024-25 Prospects Thread: As We Wait For Alexander

Nadeau has a small frame and other warts in his games, but he certainly has an NHL release. It was nice to spend first round currency and get a first round shooting talent. Seems like most of our NHL forward lines in the past few years haven't had one player with a release like that. You put a little shooting talent in our system with a guy like Jarvis or Roslovic and you see the impact it has. During the outdoor game against the Caps a commentator famously told us we needed more 45' players, and I think Nadeau is our man. I'm not yet penciling him in for next year or anything, but I do think he'll make the show and add that much needed shooting skill.

We released Pashin last year. I wonder if we slightly regret doing that. He’s got 36 points in 47 games in the KHL this year.

Well that sucks. Wonder why he won’t sign with us. He’s been to camps, hasn’t he? We have a relationship with him.

On paper he’s potentially a great bottom six fit.
On one side I agree.

On the other, I remember we were all excited about Chase Priskie in 2019. Fast forward 6 years and he's a good AHL defenceman.

Almost certainly because his agent knows that there are craploads of teams with f**k all in terms of a farm system and an ever- perpetuating need for cheap bottom-six talent. The Canes have a pretty backwards roster where our core is cheap but our role players are expensive. Most contending clubs are built more like Toronto, Tampa, or the Rangers.

"The Montreal, Quebec native"

I wonder if we might have offended his childhood fave team at one point or another.

Easier said than done when you're at the tail-end of the first round and subsequent rounds are a crapshoot. Honestly the fact that we have any guys at all worth talking about from each draft is impressive...most of them won't make it, but we definitely have a lot of guys that give hope. I do think we need to start drafting some size though, undersized skilled Russians may be low risk high reward late in a draft, but if they don't turn into top 6 players you're pretty much SOL
TBH I liked the strategy we had with our second round guys for a while there. Eetu, Drury, and Pono all already are or look like long term NHL guys even if they never top being 3rd liners. Rees was trending the right direction as well until he got screwed by Chicago thinking they were above being an AHL squad.

I’m glad we now have a farm system. I think we over rate that system a tad. There’s plenty of room for a two way center with size and a willingness to use it. He’s actually number one on a list of one.

My argument is that the Canes usually find the best bottom-six support in trades and free agency, not the draft. Guys like Noesen, Carrier, Robinson, and Jankowski are generally a heck of a lot more effective at playing the Rod style than the younger types floating around the AHL.

I like the strategy of going for boom or bust guys in the draft. Might be a good idea to adjust the models to weight size more favorably though.

Generally-speaking, below the 1st round, almost every one of the potential top-6ers are going to have some sort of defect. They compensate for this by drafting in large quantities. The Canes have a bunch of small guys, but they're still one of the best defensive teams in the league (and likely the best if you exclude goaltending factors, such as Hellebuyck in Winnipeg).
