I'm ok signing Kreider after we trade him, but not before, having the return for him would let me forgive the contract we would have to give him. Having said that someone else will pay him more than we will when he is ufa.

Not as concerned to be honest.

  • Money coming off the books after next season. Significant money.
  • We can move pieces around. It wont be hard to move a Strome or Skjei or Buch or a combination of them. They will get value back and yes while they may still be taking salary back it either still could be less or a better valued deal. They could also do a 2-for-1 and then sign a cheap vet to fill a role that is suitable while you wait for a prospect to push through OR the next hockey trade
  • The 2nd contract for a lot of the kids just isnt concerning. They havent done enough to warrant a big pay raise that would not allow the rangers to make it through years 2-4 of Kreider’s contract. By years 5-7 the cap could be increased enough to handle these things. Players moving in and out. Howden doesnt deserve any big increase. Lias isnt even here. Fox is 2 years away still. Lindgren wont demand the world —may be selected by Seattle. Chytil will get the most and even that wont be crazy money

Yes but why would we move Skjei, Strome or Buchnevich who all fit better into our age group and are controlled in one way or another to give Kreider a long term contract?

with 5 left until the trading deadline and still 8 offers on the table the Rangers network went down
I don’t get the feeling the Rangers overplayed their hand as much as they wanted different assets that are typically not available. The disappointing thing here is waiting till the last minute negotiating with Kreider.

If the Rangers cant come to a fair agreement for both parties you have to trade him, it really doesn't matter if it's a late 1st and a player like Jost. Hell that pick might be the difference if the Rangers want to move up some spots and grab someone they really want.

Rangers need to keep building that pipeline so that when the Chytil's, Fox's and Kakko's of the world need new (and likely expensive) new contracts you have quality talent coming up through the ranks on ELCs. It's the best way to sustainablely good long term.

Yeah, self-rental should be completely out of the question. Sign or trade. The clock is ticking.

Panarin/Hall
Kreider/Palmieri
Hischier/Chytil
Greene/Staal
Zacha/Kakko

Zajac, Butcher, Wood, Vatanen, Severson, strictly talking this season, the rosters have some comparisons.
And goaltending is still the significant difference here.

The other difference is i like our “secondary group” much better..

Fast, Strome, ZIBANEJAD, Buchnevich, Trouba, Fox, DeAngelo, Lindgren. I especially love our right side of the defense which is a monumental factor in the success. Lemieux is important to for his role.

Because Kreider drives play more than those guys. You can win the tough playoff games with a guy like Kreider more than you can a Buchnevich or a Strome. They could move those players and their style of play and they would be fine. They are much more replaceable. Kreider is also the leader of the room. He is the captain without the title. He bring more to the table on and off the ice.

Gorton won't pull a (Columbus) Panarin. Kreider is either signing here or being traded - Brooks' article is just an obvious thing that's already a given.

sort of, but that team started hot and then really tapered off while being kept alive by Hall. They were sub .500 for the last 60 games of the season.

That devils team was a massive facade, everyone and their mother knew that a hard regression was coming

I'll agree that the Rangers are actually better both now and likely long term, yet for this particular season they are not constructed all that differently.

Panarin is awesome right now, Hall was that year for them. Both teams had/have some early draft picks and other youth trying to establish themselves. They both have some vets, some not so good depth, etc.

If they start bringing in guys like Grabner, Maroon, they are falling into a similar trap.

well, there is Strome, ADA, Fast in addition to Kreider. Not to mention any piece could potentially be moved while, who knows what’s going on with Hank.

it is possible, Strome and ADA hit arbitration for a year, Kreider is resigned and Fast is moved. It’s a cap train wreck and honestly not sure how the next trade deadline can be better b/c with an expansion draft.

If they self rent guys and do that? Yes, they would be doing very dumb and very shortsighted things.

Even in the event that they move Fast and Kreider, I'd rather slide other guys in the lineup into their spots than trade for someone like Grabner. If we're going to make additions, lets make meaningful ones please.

Why did you leave off players who likely could command a huge pay raise? If Igor continues to dominate, which is not unlikely at all, he could easily be getting upward of 6-7 million on his next contract. Kakko? If he suddenly puts up 60-70 points his 3rd year he is going to be getting a huge raise. Fox? DeAngelo? Our future Captain Mika Zibanejad is going to get paid his next contract as well. Using Howden, Lias, and Lindgren as your examples show you are really reaching hard on this.

You are basing things off assumptions like the cap going up enough where we will be ok and none of our young players getting big contracts. That a terrible way to run a business and horrible foresight.

This really is one of the most intriguing deadlines I've ever seen. I think they are gonna try to re-sign Kreider and I'd that can't happen then he gets traded.

I know we don't have a perfect roster but the goalie is like a cheat code and has me wondering if we really could win it all. I don't know that beating him in 4 separate games is gonna be easy for any team to do.

Unless I'm missing something, the Rangers have 15.64 million in cap space to resign Kreider, Fast, TDA, Strome, Lemmy, PdG, with Kreider and Fast being UFA. Georgiev is an RFA as well, but I have to imagine he'll be gone.

It's gonna be a tight fit, even if we buyout Hank or Smith, which would free up 4 and 1.5 mil respectively. Ideally we find a taker for Skjei, who should have some value around the league, but I'd imagine we'd have to take some salary back. Strome will have some value as well, and he's definitely the easiest to let go out of the bunch up for raises.

I'm not at all interested in moving Buch during his cost-controlled years.

Man oh man dude... yea im reaching because I didnt spell it out for you that the $22 million coming off the books next season plus 2 cap increases, this year and next, would be applied toward Fox, DeAngelo, Mika, and apparently Kakko who is scoring 70 points in the next 2 seasons.

Talk about basing things off assumptions and reaching hard...

I know we aren't likely to help out Carolina right now, but man they sure look like they could be ripe for the picking on a Georgiev deal.

I think they may start to think about it, I mean if they are keeping Kreider, Fast or extending them, why are they not making other moves that benefit their chance for these playoffs? It would be like 1 of the 3 or 4 those two would still be effective for.
