"Where I believe Jack Eichel will succeed is a place where he doesn't have to be 'the guy'...to carry the entire load of a team."

I actually think this is true even though for 10M you SHOULD be able to and should be required to, but he wouldn't have to do that here with Panarin et al.. He would have to do that in ANA, LAK (at least for a while), in Minn he would have Kaprizov

So, another Rick Nash.

I see Larkins name thrown around a lot, but why would Detroit trade him?

I’m intrigued by some of the Veteran Defensemen that are now available. I know some aren’t what they used to be, but for a year or 2 to help the kids and be a stop gap would be pretty valuable.

thats an interesting issue, because they would just gave him a ton of leverage on a contract, and they might be stuck with it which could eat their cap hit.

Last year the isles sat on the Greene, Martin and Schneider deals. They can’t be this dumb so it’s just a matter of filing paperwork .

Likely Greene but could be Coburn

Oh i agree its alot, i just believe he is the right player to go in on. Unless Barkov comes loose, there really is no1 else that works better. Then youre really playing with fire bc if not Barkov youre left with interesting choices but no1 really that can grow with this core. We can draft but again that will take 3+ years to see the end result and the end result could be nothing. I doubt Larkin is a finished product. The kid is 24 yo and already easily a top 25 center in the league(what we hope that player will be even if we traded for Krebs or Turcotte. )

Also as my guy @Ola just said, Strome would obviously be traded for picks and prospects to restock the cupboard since the center lineup would be Zibs, Larkin, Chytl... Thats sexy now and for our future.
I like larkin, but I think getting him out of Detroit is going to be too hard of a task. Especially with Stevie Y there now.
I do agree that If Chytil isn’t the 2C to start the season they need to get a more established guy like - larkin, Cirelli, Dvorak, Lindholm etc.
I don’t think they are completely out on Eichel either, depending on price. But the sooner they figure out the 2 C situation, the better it is for the team. Management can also focus on fixing our bottom 6 come Free Agency.
In terms of highest need IMO
1- figure out a stable C situation by getting a solid 2C. That is going to determine if/how long Zibby will be here long term.

2- start reforming the bottom 6. We need at least 2 maybe even 3 guys to shape the bottom 6 into what a winner looks like.

3.- the 3rd D pairing. This comes last because who knows if they plan on dealing Nils or not. Most likely for an established 2C, he’s in a package going the other way. Maybe Schneider kills it in camp and proves ready? Still a lot of unanswered questions about 3rd pair but there’s time at least.
I am sure however, that Drury/Co won’t want an all rookie 3rd D pairing. So I expect at least some battle tested vet back in a trade or free agency

Not specifically with the Islanders, this is the reason DeAngelo wasn’t cut loose yet. The Rangers could always trade Bitetto to them and still have ADA to fulfill their expansion draft requirement. Someone else may end up in this position.

Bitetto played 14 games last year and DeAngelo 6. Not sure what the benchmark is but if they have to had played in 27 games in 20-21 neither meet that criteria.

Also, people need to make a decision. Is Chytil better than his numbers suggest and he just needs opportunity or is he just a 3C? Moving Strome to backfill the 3C spot, based on Chytil’s p/60 and other metrics shouldn’t be that large of a drop off in production. The team GREATLY needs an identity 3rd line. In an ideal world, sure, they trade for someone like Larkin but is that really necessary? Look at Chytil’s numbers and his age. Does the team not have a soon to be 2C already in house?

Next year will be another transition year more than likely, it’s time to see what Chytil and others can do. Build a big, strong, defensively capable 3rd line with a couple of veterans and see how the young kids progress.

Strome and Buch traded

Sign Foligno and Bonino

Howden taken in expansion

Lafreniere-Zibanejad-Kaako
Panarin-Chytil-Kravtsov
Kreider-Bonino-Foligno
_______-Rooney-Gauthier/vet

The 3rd line is capable of playing more minutes if needed. If someone gets hurt, any of those 3 guys can step up and Gauthier or Barron can step in.

Howden is overhated to a comical extent
This is correct. He’s never going to be the 2C we thought he could be when he was acquired. But it doesn’t mean he can’t carve out a role as a good bottom 6 career player. I just don’t think it will be with NY
We have youth and question marks all over the line up, I think we are going to want more of a vet presence in the bottom 6, especially on the 4th line where Howden currently plays

maybe someday but so far Howden is not a good hockey player even as a 4th liner. he's below replacement level

Can we please not play with words. It will be a major development jump if Howden somehow manages to become a 3rd liner. At this point even an effective 4C is not a given though still possible. If we take Francis’ familiarity with Gauthier out of equation it’s really Howden’s “versatility” and NHL experience is what would make him more attractive to Seattle but I don’t think it would be enough to overcome said familiarity. From the Rangers perspective it’s the same question - do they value the experience and ability to stand in as 4C insurance from Howden in case of injuries or still think they’d be able to get Gauthier to develop into the player they saw when they traded Keane for him.

But not really, though. Howden STINKS. All over the ice and in all situations. The eye test is backed by the analytics.
It's difficult because he has the heart and he gives the effort, but the skill package just isn't there. And the league the way it is now you can't really support jed ortmeyer type players in your lineup these days. Just about everybody has to be able to contribute on both sides.

It's 40 games in the previous season or 70 in the last 2. I'm not sure if that been prorated due to the last 2 seasons being shortened. If it wasn't, ADA would meet the criteria but Bitteto wouldn't.

Edit: The games requirement is prorated so Bitteto is eligible as well since he's played about 60 games the last 2 years.

  • One of the exposed defensemen and two forwards must not only be under contract in 2021-22 but must have played in 27 or more games in 2021 OR played in 54 or more NHL games between 2019-21

I wanna see both Berard and Pajuniemi play in Hartford.

I know its gonna be a few years for Berard, but two little guys with aggressive approaches to the game (Berard overall and Lauri from a shooters perspective)

I absolutely loved what I have seen from Berard, especially in the WJC where his motor just never stopped.

Reminded me of a faster, less physical Callahan.
