I don’t think that’s a terrible trade for the islanders. I know they are in win now mode but they needed money off the books and they grab a pretty high pick in return

The forward/blueliner protection rules to me are foggy on the Brendan Smiths and Stu Bickels of the world.

Do they go by games played at said position?

I’m seriously intrigued by Tyler Johnson. His possession numbers have been solid for a long while too and with his skating, he’s been an effective PKer in the past. I think he’s probably more suited to that RW/center in a pinch role but for 3 more years at $5m, if TB either retains or offers some sweetener to take him, and I’m Drury, I don’t hang up immediately.

The idea of Blackwell for Johnson + as a basis for a deal makes some sense from a cap perspective for TB. Similar playing styles and they would save $4m+
We would be dumb to take on an extra $2-4 million for Tyler Johnson without a significant add from Tampa in the range of a 1st round pick. They’re cap strapped, and no team wanted Johnson last offseason. People want to make moves just to make a trade at this point but TJ is not a player that really makes us better, and only pushes down prospects/young players even more. Zibanejad/Strome/Chytil at center (even though TJ isn’t a center anymore) already with Buchnevich, Kakko, Kravtsov at RW. LW is even more full.

You think he'd resign just to help the Islanders out and risk being picked by an expansion team at 38 years old? (granted the risk is probably pretty low)

Right, and if he does sign a contract and he's not taken they have to deal with that cap hit...

Strome's the one that mouthed off in the media. You can't sacrifice the whole top 6. You can make an example of the least valuable member of that group to make it clear that those days are over.
See, I find it truly troublesome that the PP1 ignored the coach and refused to come off the ice as instructed. It's selfish, disobedient, and emblematic of the me first attitude of the team. It looks like played to get the coach fired. Or Quinn couldn't manage the room and there was a mutiny. I don't like that the first unit screwed over their teammates which could have a direct impact on their future earnings, at least in theory.

Strome should have kept quiet but I'm not running him out of town without context. Was Quinn wrong and he stood up to something? Did he galvanize the room? Maybe panarin shouldn't be making roster decisions if he's getting paid nearly $12m a year. Or maybe we shouldn't be trying to assume things about the dynamics in the room. Seems like a reach for us way out of the loop.

It's not going to be hard for the Isles to trade a 6th round pick for a garbage defenseman who qualifies.

except everyone knows they need it. Plus everyone else is trying to make sure they have the appropriate garbage defenseman so they dont lose someone good.

Hajek isn't under contract, so he wouldn't count unless they signed him.

We could trade them ADA and then they could buy him out after Seattle doesn't take him.
oh that would be amazing. force them to burn some cap hit.
