I would have 100% taken Gauthier at that contract
If we could sign him for 1 year, $4M.... move Goodrow and get it done.
I’d rather punt goodrow lock up Laf and key, and force cuylle up early. If you can punt Goodrow and bring VT back…I would be beyond thrilled. Unlikely…but…
I’m a less extreme, but still vocal critic of Laf. People get this stuff by looking at the kid and watching him play. Sure, body composition isn’t everything (Hi Phil Kessel), but Laf is very clearly laboring at the end of shifts and he does not look like someone who is putting in the hard work to increase his fitness so that he can start physically competing better at the NHL level.
Again, he might actually be doing so, but people are looking for some evidence of that since we all agree that it’s pretty critical to his eventual success.
It’s definitely not the right way to look at it. We have squandered at least 4 firsts and 4 seconds between busts, ill advised rentals, and paying to make bad contracts go away. That’s a heavy toll for a team supposed to be rebuilding and finding a Chytil and a Miller in the 20s doesn’t make up for it. You’re supposed to find a hit or two in the 20s on top of success with your early picks.Eh I dunno if this is the right way to look at it.
I'd rather have Chytil and Suzuki than just Chytil.
I'd rather have Farabee and Miller than just Miller and a few games of Tarasenko. Farabee is really the only good forward from that 1st round taken after the top 4 so that makes that miss hurt less. Doesn't mean they couldn't have taken a D but it is what it is.
We got Bobrov'd and I'm glad hes taken his act to Montreal (where surprisingly, they passed on the Russian who is actually good this year.)
Eh I'd dispute that. Panarin is really the only "veteran mercenary". Trochek now too I guess but generally the Rangers did mix together draft picks and trades for young players/prospects to build this team up and added skilled veterans like Panarin (and Strome and Trochek as they came along and filled a need). It’s definitely not the right way to look at it. We have squandered at least 4 firsts and 4 seconds between busts, ill advised rentals, and paying to make bad contracts go away. And this is not counting the fact that Laf and Kakko are giving us pennies on the dollar for being first and second overall. It also doesn’t take into account mismanaged assets who were allowed to depreciate like DeAngelo instead of being traded at their obvious peak when it was obvious we had replacements in the pipeline.
This rebuild had so much promise 2-3 years ago but has gone complete belly up since then. It’s being held afloat by the same veteran mercenary types this org always relies on, plus good goaltending and a Norris defender who picked us instead of vice versa.
Great idea for a prospect who’s biggest flaw is his skating

Regarding Panarin, he has clearly declined. His first year with the Rangers, he was 100% worth his contract. He was great in all situations and played a 200 foot game. His 2nd year wasn't quite as good, but still worthy of that contract. Since then, he hasn't been nearly as good. His points the last 2 years have been propped up by a strong power play.
These are his points per 60 numbers at 5 on 5 since he's been a Ranger:
2019-20: 3.28
2020-21: 3.06
2021-22: 2.52
2022-23: 2.45
That's a clear decline in his 5 on 5 play.
These are his even strength numbers (all EV situations) and league ranks (among forwards):
2019-20: 71 in 69 games (1st)
2020-21: 40 in 42 games (10th)
2021-22: 59 in 75 games (18th)
2022-23: 56 in 82 games (25th)
25th among all forwards might seem good, but he's had the 2nd highest cap hit in the league all 4 years (MacKinnon's new contract starts this coming year, dropping Panarin to 3rd).
These are his plus/minus numbers:
2019-20: +36 (69 games)
2020-21: +14 (42 games)
2021-22: +21 (75 games)
2022-23: +4 (82 games)
I know people say plus/minus is meaningless, but it says something that a 92 point player was only a plus 4, particularly on a team that finished with 107 points. Mika managed to be a +25, Kreider +21, and Chytil +15 on the same team. Even Jimmy Vesey was +13.
Panarin is not currently worth his cap hit. He needs to be better if we want to win a cup.
Ottawa would make sense but he seems unwilling to sign anywhere at this point lolBrooksie says Tarasenko wanted to come back to the Rangers, didnt like the offers out there, and fired his agent. I mean, I dont see how theyd have the space to bring him back unless theres an out of left field move. I would be absolutely floored if he took what Wheeler did.
Andy Strickland is speculating Ottawa once the DeBrincat deal is done. Pretty sure Vladdy is close with the Tkachuk's from his time St. Louis.
Garland would require assets...In terms of fit, or need, I still don't see why Tarasenko would be the target. If the Rangers could find $4m, I'd go after Garland with some $$ retained if Vancouver was still looking at moving him. That would fit better
I mean, to me again goes back to how much you believe a coach and system make a difference. Panarin wants to freewheel but that just isn't a thing that can happen in the NHL. This playing aimlessly and with no plan or strong guidance from the coach has resulted in him being less effective IMOPerhaps it’s a Gallant thing, as the team itself has struggled at 5v5 with him at the helm.
Chytil and Kam are good skaters. CK could use his speed so much more than he has in the last few seasons. We might be the slowest team in the NHL right now. Other than krieder and zibby we have no one. I bet we are selling off parts by Presidents’ Day.
