If you put Marc Staal and Gritty in a police lineup, who here could honestly tell the difference?

I'd deal Lafreniere, Lindgren, and a prospect for Nylander and run away laughing. Don't @ me.
Lindgren was another option (has already been discussed trading him in here) and he would certainly help Toronto.

That cap isn’t enough tho (3M + 2.3-5) is 1.3 short

I will say I'm not opposed to any ideas for improving the team and while I don't want to trade Kaako or Lafreniere, I wouldn't have them completely off-limits.

In saying that, a move of one of those guys would need to bring back a cost controlled asset at least for a few years and than one who was a RFA. Think Zegras or someone like that.

I like Nylander, but if he is going to go UFA and expect that type of contract, I'd just take my chances to see who hits the open market.

I mean, here is the list of guys who may be hitting the market:
Matthews
Stamkos
Aho
Nylander
Reinhardt
Scheifele
Guentzel
Eberle
Berttuzzi
Teravainen
Backlund
Marchessault
Hanifan
Lindholm
Perron
Toffoli
Toews
Pesce
Debrusk
Duchene
Barabonov

Obviously some/most of these guys aren't going to make it to UFA but if given the choice, I'd take:

Lafreniere + Lindgren + 1st + someone like Toews/Pesce + Debrusk over just moving all of that for Nylander

People shit on him all the time but Staal isn’t a bad 6/7 option and had a decent year.

1100+ games. Crazy.
Hes a fine 7/8 option at cap min.
He’s the exact same guy we paid to get rid of.
1.1 million for a turnstyle.

Nylander at 6.6 is a great value right now but that extension/signing will be around 8.5-9 and that ends up changing the value

He's a good veteran presence on a rebuilding team.
Is he?
I’ve heard nothing about that in his time in Detroit.
I don’t automatically believe anyone who’s worn an A on the rangers is a great leader, and I don’t automatically believe veterans who are good leaders on a cup team become good leaders on a rebuilding team.

If this season doesnt include our 1oa and 2oa picks in the top 6 we can forget about it, nothing happens until those kids are a major part of this team, the vets make too much and you can't fill in the top 6 with guys like Vesey and Goodrow. Wheeler was a nice signing at that money but he should fill the 3rw spot not the 1rw spot.
Exactly.

Kane is going to come back when healthy and basically for free. Play him with Laf, nothing better for his development than ice time with a Hall of Famer.

Other than that, this is the team.

Have you watched local Detroit or Florida broadcasts? They espouse his mentorship towards younger players and how valuable it is.

I’m not going argue with you that a winger, who kills penalties and plays on the PP, with an ATOI of 18+/game isn’t a 1st liner. It’s ridiculous.
I think the issue here is you are talking about talent and I’m talking about non special teams ice time. Which he was not in the top six of. Which you brought up... I’m not arguing that he’s not a first line talent. I don’t care what we call him, but hopefully the kids start getting (and deserving) increased time and responsibility across the board. People get caught up in line numbering. I personally dont give a shit what we call the lines.
In any case, even though Kreider is a beast, he might benefit from more judicious use as he advances into his mid 30’s.

If I am choosing between guys coming off hip surgery, its definitely Kane over Puljujarvi. Would much rather gamble on the future HOFer than the draft pick bust
Also, just ONE hip for Kane.

Det putting Zadina on waivers. Guess there was no market for him. Some team should take a gamble on him but NYR can't afford him at close to 2mil. Only way would be for them to move Goodrow but no indication Dru wants to do that.

what thbis says to me, is that Detroit is trying one last option to move him without taking money back. It won't happen. Goodrow to Detroit confirmed
