Roster Building Thread VI (2022-23): Offseason edition

We're a cup contending team and the guy provides very little at a $3.6M cap hit. It's a detriment. Cap space has insane value right now

Let’s ask this then. In 2 years, when the cap jumps, do we think Goodrow will hold negative value? I don’t. There are teams who can use him to bridge a gap and fill a hole (both in the locker room and on the ice) and then could use him as a trade chip in the future

Anyway, you are free to believe what you like, it's all good, buddy, but don't expect anyone to stop talking about, and factoring in, the inevitable cap rise. I think you are on an island there.
If I turn out wrong, feel free to bust my balls!

Yes.

Vesey is a better player. He costs 800k. I'd rather have 4 Vesey's than 1 Goodrow. In a vacuum, I'd rather have Vesey than Goodrow tbh.

Goodrow is a 4th liner. You can't be paying a 4th liner that much. Our entire 4th line shouldn't even cost that much.

Goodrow should be forced to switch contracts with Vesey if he somehow stays.

I’m looking at San Jose. Heading in to a rebuild. Probably moving Karlsson. They have a few years of a rebuild coming. Goodrow knows the team and the area and his contract runs out when they should be on the upswing when they can trade him and add some picks or prospects.

If Goodrow was a UFA to be and it was at the deadline, he’s the type of player that returns a 2nd + probably from a contender.

In 2 years when the cap increases, the Vesey’s of the world won’t be making $800k.

Also, Vesey is criminally underpaid. He should be making $1-1.25m.

This I agree with. I think he returns a couple of late picks, say 5th + 7th

I like this line up. With Cuylle and Othmann in and CONSISTENT top minutes for Laf and Kakko, I see no reason why they can't be just as good as last year or the year before. If desired, we can sign a 4th line center to push Brod to 13th forward, which he is well suited for, but he has his family in Hartford so he usually prefers to be there. And he is the captain. And if its not Othmann on that right side, maybe another young guy makes something happen, or you sign a few more league minimum journeymen. With Lavi in, Hathaway is a real possibility though I wouldnt like him at anything over 1 million.

I think you need to flip Panarin and Laf in this lineup. You need to keep the puck away from Panarin in the neutral zone and Mika is the best puck transporter on the team. Also, a Laf/Chytil/Othmann line would be a way more in your face/forecheck till our legs falls of line than Laf/Mika/Kakko. Mika is good on getting in on the forecheck initially and then he just goes into float mode. We see this happen time and time again whenever Kakko gets put on his line. Mika doesn't play well off the cycle so he needs a miracle pass to get to him. Panarin works best with a floater center like Strome but Mika is a way better player than Strome. Kakko is a way better version of Fast. Now you have a seriously upgraded version of the Panarin/Strome/Fast line of the past.

Suter is a horrible option. His play has declined a lot but he is also not at all the type of person you want in that locker room. Serious character issues that is a large part of why he was bought out of minny
