I'm warming up to either drafting a big, mobile PMD or using that pick to trade for one.

I didn't think Jones was bad, I just thought he was kind of unimpressive. As an undersized offense-first player, you have to be good. If you're just there, you're perceived as being terrible. If you're 6'6" and you're terrible, you're perceived as being just there.

This is why NHL teams consistently drink bleach instead when the bodega is out of their favorite beer.

I would concur with this statement. I didn't see anything egregious. Just a guy trying not to make mistakes, which isn't really his game

I think it may be wise to give Kane a game off or two, in the final five. No way he should play Thursday.

I mean if they want to trade REDACTED for a upgrade sure but whose cap hit can they afford?

Why can’t they?
Cap reasons? emergency call up? not sure but I would imagine we can't just rest a player and call up someone from Hartford?

Lmao.

Everyone knows whats wrong here though. Its not going to get any better by giving him time off and he's going to be so doped up in a few weeks that his ass is going to glow in the dark.
Less chance of him getting smashed into the boards by Fat Maroon...I mean Pat Maroon in a meaningless game.

They should definitely be drafting defense in the 1st round if there's a strong one available. We have more wings than we know what to do with and with Mika-Trocheck-Chytil under contract through the next election cycle, center is really no longer a pressing need. The defensive depth has dried up quickly.

Do we have the Mikkola-Fox pairing stats over the past five or six games? I suspect the numbers are improving as they settle in together.

Over the past week, which is 4 games, they have an xGF% of 54.72%, but the other metrics aren't great. Their CF% is still below 50% and their chances and high danger chances for and against are about even.

IDK if a center or RW like Brindley or possibly Danielson is around I would hope they don't skip over someone like that

What I don't understand is that teams are afraid to play these undersized mediocre puck-movers (even if they're much better than dreck like Harpoon) because they don't want Neal Pionk (understandable), but actual Neal Pionk is a no-questions-asked regular, farting along in the 2nd percentile defensively and putting up 35 points.

Sometimes I reach the point where I'm just like "yeah, they just like bad players."

It's certainly an understandable line of thought. If we want to be better defensively, then we need defensemen who are better defensively. The problem with that thought is that it is too simplistic. It leaves you with a 3rd pairing that can't move the play up ice and winds up pinned in their own end until a goal is scored, there's any other type of stoppage, or one of those hand grenade lobs into the neutral zone buys enough time for them to change (but then the next shift has to start in a bad position).

I am not sold on Mikkola-Fox as a long-term option. When Mikkola was acquired, the general consensus from St. Louis fans was that he was an OK depth guy but don't expect too much from him. He's played reasonable well next to Fox for the past few games, but I don't know if that level of play is sustainable for Mikkola. He very well may revert to looking like the 3rd pairing defender he was in St. Louis and when he was playing with Schneider.

Lindgren has established a track record of being able to play with Fox. You can have concerns about his health, but he's still only 25. If we give him a reasonable 4 year contract after this one, we can avoid having another Girardi situation while still having a heart and soul player through his prime years.

Panarin isn't physically capable of playing like the kid line, is the thing.

It was like asking Gaborik to play black-and-blueshirts hockey.

Panarin thrives on space. Counter-intuitively, the kid line is elite when they've got very little space.

I disagree. He's more than capable and we've seen it from him... His bad habits have formed and gone unchecked since Covid. He's better over the past month(s) or so... He can still drop it into another gear IMO

88th percentile, elite at moving the puck, doesn't take penalties, and if he gets more than $2m, I'll eat my hat.

You guys keep going tall. To say it's a cap league is an understatement at this point. If you want value, go short.

Who does he play with though? Trouba and Schneider are already defensively questionable.

Gallant showing the top 6 video of the kid line. Maybe if they decided to work as hard as they do the results would follow. Tarasenko is probably the one guy I'd exclude, he's been hustling since the returned from that western canadian trip.

Tarasenko and Tro i'd exclude.

Kreider needs to wake the f*** up, he's been by far the worst and least effective.
