It was more in response to Stanley. I think Mikkola is a pretty good player who is 100% an NHL level defenseman, but he isn't what we need at that spot.

It's not about making the bottom pair a top 4 pair, it's about having the right kind of players there to make it suck less than it has. All of this would have been easier if Jones had just taken off with his opportunity and/or Gallant had the patience to let him work through it but its clear that neither he (or Drury it seems) has any interest in another undersized D. Doesn't even have to be a pure PMD at that spot, just someone who is pretty good at everything would suffice. Mikkola is really good at some things, but he's woefully terrible at others and those are things that we just happen to need the most.
Someone who's pretty good at everything isn't a 3rd pair guy though.
Schneider is someone who will be pretty good at everyone if he hits his ceiling. The problem is that once he does that, he's a top 4d.
Look around the league at 3rd pairs. You're getting guys with flaws. Now if you want a pure PMD you get ADA.
If you want a guy who can clear the crease and stop goals, you get a guy lke mikkola.

Gallant has a type of guy he likes on his 3rd pair, and they need to be able to really clear the crease. Jones unfortunately will be moved this off season. Probably get a 2nd round pick.
The only way jones makes the team somehow is if theres a top 4 spot imo next to trouba.

For Kane to stay hed have to take near league minimum. I just dont see it.

Pepe can play too. Hes not a plug. Love his style of hockey too. Total prick

Yep, it would be a very cheap deal if he came back. For Kane though...You can't put a pricetag on peace of mind. He's not playing for Money at this point of his career. In addition to that, Kane will have lots of opportunities after his playing career. He's arguably the greatest American Born player all time. I don't think the Benjamins will drive his decision. I think getting to play on a contender in the place where he wants to be is going to factor heavy.

The roster comparison between McDavid's rookie season and what would be Bedards 1st season in NY is night and day different. Edmonton had Leon, didn't have a Panarin or a Fox or a Kreider or a Shesterkin. Nor did he have the overall depth that the NYR have and would still retain post the discussed proposal.

Additionally, one of the biggest challenges that Edmonton has that NYR will never have is the ability to attract AND retain top end talent.

Context matters and the comps for what McDavid went through during his career are absolutely and completely irrelevant to any situation where NYR were to acquire Bedard.

It's not a no brainer, but it's also not a deal you don't make out of concern over depth.
The point is having that ONE generational player is not better than having a stacked team. And its about way more than his first season. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush... Yes you can TRY to build around the one mega star, but it's IF-IER than rolling with a deep talented team. There's no guarantee there. In fact there's no guarantee that Bedard comes in and is a super star, though, sure, I would bet on it. And even McDavid has "only" broken 110 points 3 times, he's not been a 150pt per season player, great as he is.
It's all moot, no team is trading that pick, because, as I already said, if he does become McDavid, it's really bad optics just about no matter you got. No team is taking that chance.
I hope I don't come off like I wouldn't love Bedard on this team, It's just at a certain point it's diminishing returns as far as team success.

I expect Jones to be dealt for a pick at the draft in June. Regardless of what you feel about Ben Harpur, that he got games in crunch time when Lindgren was hurt when this defensive group fails to move the puck out against aggressively forechecking and pressing teams is telling. I don't buy the cap space excuse.

Would love to recoup a 2023 2nd and 2024 pick for Jones. Maybe like a 2023 2nd + 2024 4th from a team like Seattle would be doable.

He’s never going to get a chance here.

I hope not, that would be silly

Jones is better than Robertson and Harpur. They need to give him a shot instead of ripping him out of the lineup every other game

Fall 2023 is last chance café' for Jones and Robertson.

I think we get to camp with those fighting for the roster.

This is what happens when you spill paint in the garage
Lemus is exact guy we lack man I miss that guy, one of the best in the game, especially come playoff time
He was our only good player in the bubble, that one game he came back after suspension

People forget he couldn’t crack our weak depth lineup in 18 and 19, and could barely score.
He’s not that good.

I think the cap goes up $4m this off-season and the Rangers find a way to sign both guys to 3-4 year deals.
'At what cost?

Maybe this is just one of those arguments where I'm well outside the mainstream of thought on this board, but I can't believe we're talking about extensions for more guys over 30 when we have contracts coming up for kids that we don't want to lose.

I don't really care that much about the LW balance. Roll three scoring lines and if need be have the designated grinder on the skill line play the RW. These guys are rentals with salary retention for a reason- most teams cant afford to ice a roster like this all season with the salary cap unless you luck into a couple sweetheart deals.

I'm telling you if the Rangers go on a deep playoff run or win the cup watch Kane and Tarasenko take the Kariya/Selanne deals 1 year/$1MM.

Heard it here first! :sarcasm:

I wish. They both have made a lot of money, I see Kane doing this more than I see Tarasenko doing it.

I don’t want Kane for 4 years.
2 years sure.

It's all about cap hit. If Kane were to be okay with 4 years @ $3.75m per season would you say yes? I would. He may prefer security with term over a higher cap hit.

The cap will be going up, that's a matter of when, not if. In a years time, they will have options to move Kreider or Trouba as needed and I am beginning to wonder of Lindgren will be a cap casualty himself in the not so distant future. Signing a couple of skilled wingers who fit the team to medium term deals isn't going to stop the team from re-signing Kaako or Lafreniere or Miller.

I don't disagree personally. Just reading tea leaves. As @jerseyjinx94 mentioned, I just don't think he'll get a fair shot here. The current regime doesn't seem to rate him.

I think they legitimately thought Harpur was the best option.

I’d like to imagine they just used Harpur to not have to put him through waivers and for cap reasons but who knows they probably just don’t like Jones

No he can’t lol

There’s a reason LA basically gave him away

People fall in love with these fake tough guy bums and they actually play like ass
Hes an above average 4th liner. You guys act like we need to fill the team with top 6 talent/thats realistic. There are roles on teams
