You know what else I don't get? And I'm sure I'll get roasted here..but using the leafs as a model not to follow just because they didn't have playoff success these past few years

They finish at or near the top of their divison year in and year out. They make the playoffs. And then key guys get hurt and they lose in 7 games
For whatever reason, they can't seem to get past the first round....don't call that a successful model to emulate.

The key to this though is getting mika to buy in at a lower dollar amount..like 8mil

He will, look at the teams with more cap space starting in 2022 ahead of the Rangers it’s slim and it’s teams that aren’t exactly good (except Boston but they’re getting older? and Carolina but they have no need for him? Wouldn’t he rather play on a possible perennial contender as much as he likes NYC?

Toronto’s top guys have simply not been good enough (like they are in the RS in the playoffs) That has hurt them more than their depth

The rangers problem isn't getting eichel.

It's kreider making what he's making, and trouba making what he's making.
Here we go again. How many freakin times do we have to hear the same line about Kreider. Can't do anything about it. Move on he is not going anywhere and BTW you talk like he is useless. Last I saw he was on his way to another 30 goal season if you projected to a full 82 game schedule. How about talking about more constructive thoughts like how we can upgrade this team so we can compete next year within our division and conference and hopefully get into the playoffs. Because based on what I see in the playoffs, guys like Kreider aren't our problem. It is the soft and lack of grit players we have on this roster. The flashy plays are nice for the ESPN highlights but we need a couple of lunch pail players in the top 6/9. The last 2/3 weeks of the season showed what this team is lacking when they folded against the top teams in our conference and the playoffs cemented that.

This is OT kind of but I love Arizona as a match for Eichel. If I were them, I'd go all in for him. They've been spinning their wheels with a good but not great young core. They just took a huge hit for any potential rebuild, their core pieces are locked in at modest terms, and their in a really weak division next year.

Keller+Hayton+ for Eichel

Eichel - Dvorak - Schmaltz/Brassard - Larrson would be great center depth.

Throw some money at Hamilton too if the owner's behind you. Try to bring in Hyman maybe.

It's a shame they're so broke lmao.

based on the makeup of the team right now I think Kreider is more of the issue. Jake can be here and serve a very useful role especially until his nmc opens up. Kreider seems to be the one that would be great to move now to open options.
I can think of 3 players that are bigger problems. Zib, Strome and FC as the top 3 centers. No one want sto admit it but its true. Zib can be a highlight real but flash does not compensate for other areas of weakness. Strome is not a good 2 way player and FC hasn't proven much. Unless we upgrade this position with more 2 way balance no sense wasting time on a player CK who isn't going anywhere.

dont disagree with your statement at all from a player standpoint, my comment was based entirely on contracts and cap hits

Z has to sign at 8. Players have to agree to take less to build a deeper, Stanley Cup competitive team. Paying a player, any player(even Panarin), over 10 is dangerous. It is just so much cap tied to 1 guy.

The only saving grace is that in our case it is our far and away best player so other players aren't as obligated to say, "Look at that guy making money, I'm better than him, I want more."

Stay away from Eichel. We don't need the big splash, we need the right one. Z at 8(if he agrees) is better value on the dollar than Eichel at 10.

Trade Georgiev, Buch, Howden, Deangelo(If possible or just buy him out), Hajek and maybe Strome if something comes along. This team needs to consider the 8 mil that Fox will get, the 5 that Igor is set to make, Laf, Kakko, Krav, Miller, Chytil. It adds up fast. Real fast. Don't be so giddy to trade 1st round picks. You need those for good players on ELCs.

Also, I have a feeling with Laf showing some good stuff towards the end of the year that him and Z and be a good tandem. That will help keep Z producing the way we need to be a contender. Kakko or krav on the other side is a good look. Whoever isn't with Laf and Z plays with Panarin and Chytil.

Kreider gives you the type of 3 line depth you need to win. He will be great as a 3 LW and help make that line dangerous against opposing 3rd pair d. Get a good center there and its even better. I don't know who might be available or who they have in mind, but it could shape up to be very formidable top 9.

More important than what the Rangers add from the outside will be how they develop and improve from within. Maybe part of the reason that our supremely skilled top players tend to fade as the intensity ups is that under David Quinn they've been assured their 20+ mins every night, their full PP time, and that the results in the standings don't really matter that much. Maybe a little less pressure and demands on how the kids play and a little more on how the vets do.

to me, lundkvist is without a doubt trade bait. Maybe not this year. But he’s the guy teams would want to give value for, and he likely won’t be playing top 4 mins here or 1 PP so his skillset is kind of a waste in that regard.
He’s blocked by Fox and a trouba on the Right for at least 3 years. And there’s a bigger meaner player nipping at his heals. Even though Schneider isn’t as offensive a weapon as nils, he fills the need more of a 3rd pair RD with regard of style of play and the type of minutes he’ll receive until the rangers can eventually move trouba. Then Schneider slides to 2nd pair and a guy like skinner takes on a 3rd pairing role because he’s cheap and again likely to not play a lot of minutes. But that’s far far down the road still
From the looks of it to me, it’s not if but when the. Deal Lundkvist. Maybe he plays great on 3rd pair this year and his value goes up even more. But long term with Fox trouba and Schneider in the fold, barring a major injury somewhere, I think he’s moved. Just one mans opinion.
I'm not against anything you said. you make great points, I think he should at least ply this year on the third pair as his smarts and 2way play will help (if ready as we think he is) and will indeed up his value. very interesting develpment on the rangers blue line in the coming years...

That's not a bad idea.
The problem with that is kadri isn’t a 2C and I’d hesitate to extend him, hes repeatedly gotten himself suspended in the playoffs. Strome at least has been our 2C and for all people say he’s carried by Panarin he managed to perform at comparable levels when he was out.
If we don’t make any further moves then you’re rolling the dice on Chytil as 2C. I will say I think Chytil should be our 2C.

There's 12 forward spots on a team.

Personally speaking I'm a 3 line kinda guy...4th line playing select few minutes here and there to change momentum or give the guys a breather but even if you're a 4 line guy you're still likely not dividing your time up evenly.

If you have 4 stars and are playing 3 lines..that's half your regular lineup. You just can't have 5 black holes out there

Let's just say to get eichel it's gonna cost strome buch some prospects not on the roster and a first this year. I'm talking maybe trading strome for assets and flipping them oraybe strome fills in for other assets we have to move.. but that's the basics.

So that's still leaving you womith the following forwards.

Eichel
Panarin
Mika
Kakko
Lafreniere
Kreider (if he's here)
Chytil
Kravtsov

That along with a strong defense and elite goaltending sets you up for a championship caliber team.

And regarding future contracts..you've got bridge deals to buy time or you figure out how to move kreider and or trouba.

If you have to trade a big contract you'll get assets for those guys.

I guess this is where I just disagree, especially over the medium term.

1. From a team construction standpoint, to me this represents "doubling down" in a big way on last year's NYR which would be a disaster. Top heavy, high offense roster. Just don't see that working out well in crunch time.

2. Adam Fox is gonna get PAID in 2022. Also keep in mind Shesterykin is a UFA in 2023 and will be due a decent raise.

3. Basically forcing yourself to bridge / play hardball with all the young kids is also to me extremely unwise. If Lafreniere does what we hope he can do, and is looking at a big ticket next contract, do they really want to say tough shit kid here's a bridge?

4. Banking on being able to just "move a big contract" and get assets is a risky assumption. When other teams see the NYR in a desperate position, it's going to make that a lot harder. See Tampa.

Except Laf, Kakko, Chytil, Fox, and Kravtsov don't stay on ELCs for the next 5 years, and Zib doesn't stay on his bargain basement contract either. We aren't Tampa Bay. The league isn't going to let us go 17 million over the cap because we really really like our RFAs.

Every team has to make hard decisions. The Rangers aren’t losing guys they’ve identified as core pieces because of the salary cap. If that causes some guys we like (Chytil, Kravtsov, Buch, Lundkvist) to get dealt somewhere along the line, so be it.

|--------------------------|---| Rangers firepower w/o Eichel
|---------------------------|--| Rangers firepower w/ Eichel

The kids along with Panarin and probably Zibs will lead the offense. That's the beauty in it. Offense is expensive. We will be getting great value out of the kids. With their ELCs to their bridge deals.
