Other than cost and risk of being a LTIR guy, Eichel doesn't really help us anywhere we really need it.

Unless we turn around and trade Zibanejad, I don't think adding him makes a whole lot of sense. It's not just the neck with Eichel either, he's got a pretty lengthy history and had 4 or 5 things that were ailing him this season. You can't win with just elite talent. Tampa tired that 2 years ago and failed miserably. It wasn't until they augmented their talent with some diversity that they got over the hump.

Yeah people fail to mention that Manning basically had no arm strength at all after he got his neck operated on and was carried by his defense for super bowl #2.

He was also much older, but its not like he came back and was the same guy.
Well we should turn around and trade Zibanejad. But there's no reason why the Rangers can't add Eichel as well as add those elements that they are missing. Maybe that won't happen in the UFA market, but by identifying low $ high value assets on other teams, instead of paying UFA market value.

The more I think if it

sign Danault and Cizikas
Trade Strome for picks or a LD vet

Laf, Zib, Buch
Panarin , Chytil , Kravtsov
Kreider , Danault , Kakko
Rooney , Cizikas , Blackwell
Gauthier
I think Cizikas is going to want good money. He plays heavy, but enduring game that has him miss games from time to time. How long will his body hold up for? We can’t risk ending up with a Callahan-esque contract. I like Cizikas as he is today but I worry about down the line.

I also think you need to come away with one of Goodrow/Coleman. I even prefer both depending on what salary you move out. Do I prefer both over a combo that would include Cizikas? I am not sure there.

Danault’s price worries me. I would prefer to try and pry Lindholm out of Calgary. I would also prefer a combo of Danault/Lindholm/Hertl/Lark. 2 from that group. Strome and Chytil out.

Lafreniere-Zib-Buch
Panarin-Hertl-Kakko
Kreider-Danault-Kravtsov
Goodrow-Cizikas-Blackwell
Gauthier

It's Larry, he's a hack's hack who hates the Rangers. Lou runs the Islanders, ergo, they can do no wrong in Larry's eyes.
upload_2021-6-10_18-49-33.jpeg

The Islanders are winning more because of the commitment they've made to play a certain way 100% of the time than they are because of their personnel.

The Islanders are winning because they have gotten great goaltending and faced the worst goaltending in round 1. They have the 2nd worst CF% out of the 16 playoff teams and 5th worst xGF%. Their PK has been horrible (3rd worst PK%). They are routinely getting beaten up at 5v5 and being saved by Sorokin/Varlamov.

I don't know why Larry Brooks looks at the five remaining teams in the playoffs and decides the one we should mold ourselves after is the Islanders.

I'm not a 'physicality doesn't matter' person but seriously?
Honestly thought he made a couple of good points. Fact is we do lack some grinders on this team. Everyone focuses on a 4th line improvement but we need to sprinkle in a couple of guys with this trait in the top 6. The fancy goals are nice but they are easily shut down by good checking teams. That is one of the problems with our centers.

For everyone who is scared of Eichel's injury, Friedman today on a radio show/podcast mentioned how Peyton Manning had a similar neck injury and opted for the surgery Jack wants. He later went on to win a super bowl a few years later so perhaps its not all doom and gloom regarding his injury.

article link: Peyton Manning had a neck surgery BEFORE winning 2nd Super Bowl

This is not the re-assurance I was looking for. Granted Peyton Manning was 37 by the time he got the surgery, but the Broncos won that Super Bowl in spite of, not because of Manning.

Give me more stories about that UFC fighter, that's a story about the surgery I want to read.

I always find it amusing when people want no part of elite players because of...reasons.

He's too expensive...well no shit..he's elite.
He's got an injury concern. Well yeah..that's why he's cheap right now.

He's a 24year old franchise center signed for 5 years at a known number that can be had for pennies on the dollar. He's right handed which makes him an ideal for for a right handed left winger named panarin. He can pass or shoot and dominates possession.

Go. Get. Me. EICHEL

i find your post amusing

- are you are aware of a flat cap?

- have you bothered to research the injury? Hello? Neck surgery is risky so they’re trying a conservative therapy? Time to buy?

- that is so ridiculous lol. You have a flat cap with a $10 million dollar player with a neck issue. Pennies my @SS.

- yeah, healing in a chair is really productive on the ice

I don’t think we need to “completely reinvision our top six”

Some physicality is good, but people have this archetype of the power forward of which there are very few of at any given time in the league.

When we make the playoffs and start doing damage people will be talking about Lindgren, Trouba, and Rooney the way Brooks talks about Staal Girardi and Boyle

Chytil hasn't shown yet that he's a 2c, personally i see him on the wing at this point and if not as a 3c. He needs to see the ice better , be better on faceoffs and use his wingers more. Im not against the Strome out and Danault in but if thats the case he has to be able to be a 2c and not the 3c especially at the price point he appears to want. I'd want Danault at the contract Mtl offered him, otherwise i go looking for someone else who is either better, or as good and cheaper.

The key to getting "gritty, playoff tested" guys in the top 6 is Lafreniere & Kakko. As they mature, they will play that game more. The same goes for Chytil & Kravtsov. The reason I want Eichel is that this team needs to get there first, and spending big on stars (Mika/Panarin/Eichel) who can make this team a contender while the 19 & 20 years olds are on ELCs makes a lot of sense to me. Thats maximizing the present but not mortgaging the future to do it. Acquiring Eichel wouldnt preclude them from bringing in some veteran bangers (Goodrow, Reaves, etc.) for the bottom 6 either.

The caveat with all of this is if the Rangers dont feel comfortable with the neck injury, no deal. But having the elite talent of Panarin/Fox/Eichel/Mika/Laf/Kakko at the top of your lineup for the next 5 years is as good as anyone in the league. At the end of the day, talent still winds, and it always has.

With regards to the islanders, sure they're winning but they will never win the cup with that roster, at some point they'll run into a team that can play as hard but has more skill. Its just not happening, so for me I'm happy the way our team has been built so far. The way the isles are reminds me of the Torts years, we win some rounds and overachieve but we were never ever gonna win the cup with those teams.

Personally I'd keep the team we have, have a conversation with Getzlaf if he wants a 2 year cheap deal, sign Boyle and if you want a vet dman for depth, put Smith up front and away we go. However...im not comfortable resigning Zib to a long term deal, short term fine but with his concussion issues i think we will regret it, his style of play has already altered a bit because of them. They should be drafting centers in this draft and/or trading for a young center like Hayton( does Buch/Chytil and a pick get it done or Lavoie( could we get him for Buch?) Then get whoever it is some playing time this year and move on from Zib at some point.

I've taken issue with Brooks many times but based on watching playoff hockey for decades and just being honest with myself as an adult, it's hard to argue with what he had to say today.

It's all about balance and the Rangers are lacking in that right now. It's a simple truth that too many Rangers fans refuse to see.

We're loathe to give the Sticks any credit, but they are on thier way to the semis with a team that is well balanced buy any reasonable yard stick.

Hopefully we get a chance to meet them in a playoff next year to see how the team really measures up.

I had no interest in Eichel before his neck injury. I think my comments were well known on the subject.

Nothing has changed.

I do however caution against all types of risk avoidance. You can't avoid all risk when acquiring players. Will Cizikas break down too soon? Will Danault get old too fast? Will Ekholm leave after one year? Will Barkov leave Florida in a year?

It's also true evaluating our own players. Will Chytil break out? Will Lundkvist be NHL caliber on day one? Is Buchnevich worth a big contract?

These are tough decisions. The guys making them are paid a lot of money and operate on a short leash. It's tough to work under those circumstances.

It's also a lot of fun to first and second guess every move they make.

Yeah, its really a no-brainer.

It is not about changing how we play as a team. But you must have balance on a roster -- and if there is a single division in this league you will get exposed for not having that, its the one we are in (which was obvious before the season started).

Trade Strome, slide Laf over to center, and add a couple of wingers (of which one is a 4th line heavy weight) and a 3rd pairing LD that can fight and we have taken a big step in the right direction.

The question is how badly we want to rush things. We have plenty of skill and talent, the hardest thing to acquire. I’m ok letting the rebuild playout. But if we want to accelerate the rebuild two moves are obvious. Probably many more. So it depends what Drury wants to do. We all are impatient here, but either way I trust in Gorts even though Dolan is an asshat.

The only problem is that you need to win before the skill needs to get paid their big money because it gets harder to fill out the roster.
