I think this last series has tainted how people view Copp a bit.. since coming here he was a point per game player in the regular season for us, up until the Tampa series he was a hair under a point per game in the playoffs. That line completely fell apart but Copps been really solid for us.. something along the lines of Sam Bennet at 4.5$ X 4 years should be the target, but probably wishful, McCanns numbers are incredibly similar and got 5$ X 5 years this season. Should fall somewhere around there.

There are quite a few good comparables out there just recently.

Danault
RNH
Bennett
McCann

The number should be $4.85-5.25m depending on term.

This team is within a window of competing. Signing a 28 year old center who they know fits well with the team on and off the ice is a good move. If he were 30, it would be a different animal. And again, we need to remember that the backside of any contract for him will be in a cap environment where a $5m cap hit will seem more like a $4-4.25m cap hit when the cap jumps.

I think a number of teams blow away a 5X5 offer from us.

And that’s okay. But if we look around at opportunities for players, there aren’t THAT many teams with cap space to make a move AND offer what this team has to offer in terms of opportunity. On top of that, he’s not comfortable with the city and organization after being with them for a couple of months.

Could he scrounge some more money from a Buffalo or Seattle? Probably. But would he actually want to sign there long term?

I think it's less not wanting to resign Copp VS what he will likely command and if Miller/Laff continue their trajectories bridging will end up costing the Rangers in the long run.

This is an interesting argument but if they both take off next year and Chytil progresses to a 50 point center than the team can make decisions as needed. Guys like Lindgren and even Kreider or Trouba may need to moved a year earlier than anticipated.

With the team clearly competing right now, it’s a delicate balancing act to continue building the team for the now and the future. It may require bridging either Miller or Lafreniere with a long term deal to the other out of necessity.

I mean we look at this playoff experience and we have to weigh that as well. Bringing Copp back will more than likely allow the team to push further into the playoffs for the foreseeable future. What is that experience worth to those same young players down the road in their careers? We saw the steps many of them took this year. What’s it worth if they do something similar next year?

Thoughts on Mason Marchment? Good size, wheels and shot when he played against us. Might be cheaper than Copp because he doesn't have as long of a resume.

He’d be an upgrade over Rooney and Hunt. adds grit and physical play. I would not mind him. Does he win faceoffs and PK? Not too familiar but familiar enough that he would be an upgrade the depth here.

It's absolutely possible. You look at someone like Danault.. he got 5.5 X 6 years with a bunch of trade protection. The difference there is he had a proven track record. Like McCann, this is Copps first 50 point season. So I don't disagree with you, but both guys don't really have much history to back them up. I guess it'll really come down to where Copp would rather play, maybe some team offers him an extra half a million, but is that enough to lure him there?

I don’t think anyone is hating on Copp. He played very well here.

It’s really the contract that worries me. He’ll be 28 this summer. He’s not signing a 3-4 year deal. He’s going to want term and that worries me.
There are posts over the past few pages saying they can’t wait to see Copp off this team.

I'd like to see if Copp was playing with that lower body injury throughout the playoffs. Before the playoffs I was very interested in bringing him back at that 4.5-5 mil number but I can't get over how terrible his legs were in the playoffs. It looked like he was skating in quicksand. If it's due to the injury he sustained at the end of the regular season then that's one thing but between that, that 5 mil number supposedly getting closer to 6, and our cap situation, I'm almost inclined to pass. I think I'd prefer going with Chytil at 2C in an experiment to start the year and add a center if necessary at the deadline then bring Copp back at a 6ish number (if no other 2C options are available in offseason).

Messier line: Kreider - Zib - R. Smith
Gilbert line: Panarin - Copp - T. Johnson (50%)
Hadfield line: Laf - Chytil - Kakko
Ratelle line: Motte - Goodrow - Blais/Reaves

This is going to be another long summer on this board with the same nonsense as last year.

The idea of moving FC to a number 2 center aint happening. This team was really close to making the Finals lacking a 2 center why would they roll the dice with a question mark? If anything FC stays as the 3 center. I find it interesting that everyone is down on Copp for having a so so playoff and high on FC for having a good one. To me track record is more important

Already seen suggestions again of moving CK away from Zibs and maybe becoming a 3rd liner. Really this coming of a 52 goal season with their chemistry is absolutely mindless.

He may be too expensive but Vattrano added some scoring balance during his time here. If we don't resign him they need to replace that production. I also like Mott. Can help in a number of ways. So much better than the one dimension 3/4 line forwards we had on this team for 2/3 of the season.

This team was 2 wins from the final. Going into the season experimenting with the 2 center is not happening. They will firm it up in the offseason. The thinking on this board needs to be refreshed. This team can compete as it did this year for the cup. This offseason is for tweaking a bit not for taking a step back.

We already see some teams maneuvering for the cap. Dallas moving Bishops contract. More of that is on the way.

I think this team brings back 1 player they added at the deadline. Tyler Motte is exactly the player this team needs. Good 3rd/4th line type. Perfect for the PK. Maybe Braun, but it's more a 7D role. He was fine.

Copp and Vatrano did exactly what the team needed. They'll just cost too much. Those are internal replacements. The Kid Line needs to be the players to replace the top 6 spots opening up. Chytil and Kakko to 2C and 2RW. Lafreniere to 1LW. Maybe just roll them as the 2nd line and let Panarin-Mika-Kreider be the top line.

Build a matchup 3rd line. Also have the 4th line be Blais-Goodrow-Motte. That line will be a PITA to play against. Johan Larsson is a perfect target to add to this team as well. Won't cost much. Maybe lets you play Goodrow on the 3rd line. If Trocheck isn't asking for a ton, that's the guy who fits best as a more premium free agent to sign.

Kravtsov needs to play if he is around. Othmann needs to get 9 games to find out if it is worth burning a year. Few other young wingers that will challenge for spots.

For the defense, Jones needs to play. He's got the talent to make plays similar to Fox. Would also banish Trouba from PP2, which was their biggest issue. Jones can play the Sam Girard role. There is no reason Jones-Schneider can't be the 3rd pair.
