My question is, if the Rangers get Rackell or similar and Laf is paired with Chytil and Goodrow/Hunt, what is that line’s identity? Not sure I see that line playing the type of game they did tonight with Lafreniere, and as crazy as it is to say, what is best for the team, what do they need from that line?

Because I could easily see Lafreniere being on that line and he and Chytil getting burned trying to play a more finesse game. Gallant then puts Goodrow with Rooney and Reaves, the Chytil line gets 8 min a game, the Rooney line plays over their heads, and the NYR in total are worse off.

I think Zib needs another RW 5x5 and Rakell fits

Laf can go W Panarin

Kakko fits better w Chytil and Goodrow

Hunt is better w Rooney imo

Regardless being in more depth. Nor even sure where Vatrano ends up but options are good

Good question. Gotta make sure the right players are acquired. I like Lafreniere playing where he is playing now. And Vatrano seems good with Panarin.

Whether it’s right or not, I don’t see gallant making fundamental line changes at this point in the season unless something really unexpected happens.

CHRIS DRURY GOES FULL 1994 MODE

NYR Roster 22nd of March 2022
Kreider - Zib - LAF
Bread - Strome - X1/Kakko
Vatrano - X2 - Kakko/X1
Goodrow - Rooney - Reaves/Hunt/X3

Lindgren - Fox
Miller - Trouba
X4 - Nemeth (GG gotta GG)/Schneider

Shesty
X5 or Disgruntled Bulgar with Big Blocker

DIFFERENT ACQUISITION OPTIONS FOR DRURYS MEGA TDL
X1
= Radulov, Kessel or Domi. Rakell If the price goes down.
X2 = Copp, Stephenson or Roslovic. Namestnikov or Tierney Plan B
X3 = Carpenter, Blackwell or Sheahan
X4 = Chychrun (But likely then moving out Lindgren), Giordono, C Miller, De Haan. Zadorov Plan B If Calgary nabs Giordono. Leddy If price goes down.
X5 = Greiss, Halak or Jones

Dealt
Gauthier
Chytil
Hajek
Barron
Georgiev
McKegg
Prospect(s)
Picks(s)

COMMENTS - LOTS OF DIFFERENT OPTIONS. THAT IS FOR SURE. THIS COULD BE DONE WITH DIFFERENT LEVELS OF COST. WILL IT MAKE THE RANGERS A BETTER AND MORE COMPLETE TEAM WITH MORE DEFINITE ROLE FUNCTIONS FOR THE 2022 PLAYOFFS? THE THEORETICAL ANSWER WOULD HAVE TO BE A "YES” - BUT WITH FLUCTUATING LEVELS OF ASCERTAINTY. IT COULD ALSO SOLVE PROBLEMS IN THE FUTURE (FOR EXMPLE NABBING STEPHENSON FROM CAP STRAPPED VEGAS AND TAKING A FLYER ON AN INJURED CHYCHRUN WOULD LIKELY DO THIS - BUT WHAT IS THE COST?). THIS HIGH ACTION PLAN WOULD HOWEVER POSSIBLY DISRUPT THE ROOM A LITTLE, BUT NO REAL CORE OR LEADER TYPES ARE BEING MOVED OUT… IN 34,5 HOURS WE WILL KNOW.

THESE ARE MOSTLY MY OWN THOUGHTS BTW. I DO THINK WE WILL BE ACTIVE AND BUSIER THAN MOST THINK - WEIGHING OPTIONS VS COST… AND THAT THINGS THEREFORE ALL MIGHT COME OUT OF LEFT FIELD. BUT THE BIGGER DEALS TO REALLY MOVE FORWARD WILL LIKELY COME LATER WHEN THINGS ARE CLEARER - ALSO IN REGARDS TO CAP CRUNCH AND UNEXPECTED OPPORTUNITIES. DON’T KILL THE PROSPECT POOL NOW OR DEPLETE THE OPTIONS SO YOU ARE HANDCUFFED LATER. LOTS OF TEAMS WILL BE IN CAP HELL - THERE WILL BE SHREWD DEALS TO BE MADE FURTHER AHEAD.. USE THE HUGE CAP SPACE WE HAVE THIS TDL IN ANY AND EVERY POSSIBLE CREATIVE WAY TOO.

I POSTED LAST NIGHT WHAT I HAD DISCUSSED WITH A COUPLE OF NHL AFFILIATED PEOPLE… NOT MUCH LEAKING OUT FROM NYR FRONT OFFICE. THAT IS FOR SURE.

Great point!

Take Radulov for example. I like him. But what does it do to the rest of our lines? If we had 5 lines, get both Keasel and Radulov. Now, I am less than sold on these moves.

I think we need Kakko insurance. And a McKegg upgrade. Nothing crazy. That is probably a little overkill but in the playoffs Black Aces are important. If the team is to go anywhere, the replacements will play a big role. And with all the cap space, no need to be cheap about it. As long as they’re expirings….

Schneider and Nemeth isn’t a good enough pairing.

First of all, I — love — Schneider. But soon X percent will call him a bust, because kids always needs loads of time to find the sufficient level of consistency on the blueline. It happened to K’Andre and will happen to Schneider soon.

Second of all, I want management to set up an internal investigation to get to the bottom of what went wrong with Patrik Nemeth.

Nemeth was an analytics darling. At times, top in the league in some cathegories. But who eye tested him? 3 x 2.5m?? We know that there are some really bad rotten eggs in management of this organization.

Nemeth is just not a good enough D. If I was in the room I would have gone great length arguing that he is the type you can live with if it’s 1 year, never 3. It you are considering 3, you need to look harder because what we are getting, you can find it at 1 year. And like especially this year when we had a ton of cap space and basically could have overpaid for 1 year.

Nemeth is basically the only non functioning player on our back end now, maybe we can upgrade him, it sure would be nice to have a mulligan on that contract.

Friedman says talks on Copp are heating up. Boston, NYR, Colorado in there
The Athletic. Winnipeg beat writer says it's Colorado and Boston for Copp.

Does Boston trade DeBrusk in the Copp deal? Winnipeg is not looking to rebuild. They can re-sign DeBrusk.

Colorado and Boston are the frontrunners on Andrew Copp

Colorado had previously been connected to Claude Giroux — an acquisition that would likely have taken them out of the running for Copp or Stastny. Florida has taken over the Giroux race in recent days and now I’m hearing that Colorado is the frontrunner for Copp.

Copp would be a perfect fit on the Avalanche third line, offering two-way play and a bit of offence while playing big minutes on the penalty kill. Peter Baugh and I looked at his fit in great depth here, surmising that Copp would play with Alex Newhook and old friend J.T. Compher on Colorado’s third line.

This doesn’t take Boston out of the running, however. DeBrusk is one possibility and a definite fit, cap-wise.

Previous fits like Tampa Bay and Calgary have acquired Brandon Hagel and Calle Jarnkrok. The Lightning are done, while the Flames are running out of cap space.

Florida was once thought to be a possibility but they are the aforementioned frontrunners for Giroux. That’s a shame; a Cole Perfetti/Owen Tippett reunion could have been fun.

I really see this as a two-horse race.

The other Winnipeg writer Ken Wiebe thinks the Rangers have interest in Paul Statsny.

Copp is a big, versatile forward who can slot on the wing or at centre, kill penalties and contribute offensively – in the last two seasons, he’s produced 71 points in 109 games. The Jets had a scare when he left last week’s game against the Blues, but he appears not to have suffered a concussion. Sportsnet’s Ken Wiebe notes the Bruins as front-runners, the Avalanche as a stealth option and the Rangers, Lightning and Panthers as “in the mix.”

Stastny is 36, yet it looks like he’ll be able to produce until he’s 40. This season he has 31 points in 50 games and should break the 20-goal plateau for the first time since 2013-14, his last season with the Avalanche. Wiebe notes the Rangers have been watching closely.

The link to the article is f***ed up. It links to a Claude Giroux video.

Rakell for a 2nd and either Kravtsov or Robertson

Stastny for a 3rd if that fails
If Dallas gets a D then Radulov as a cap dump

I don’t think the teams going to feel Great w the current RW so they will try and go bigger W Rakell

Kessel , Radulov , Stastny types are fall backs

Rakell , Laf, Kakko , Vatrano , Reaves as RW depth

Too much for Rakell. If someone else wants to pay that, let them.

Still think Copp has to be option #1.

Stastny is a good fallback option. I would be quite alright if we came away with Stastny and Kessel/Radulov by 3pm tomorrow.

Yea I’m not complaining if that happens I just think that are gonna swing bigger W Zib reuniting W Rakell

Copp hasn’t really played C this year which isn’t ideal. Same w Domi. Really don’t need a LW

Goodrow is more comfortable there and I’d like Hunt on the 4th line LW

Copp has played plenty Center this year.

At this point it's hard to imagine a BIG trade that we will end up happy. Like some of you are saying, I hope we just get a little bit of depth for a 3rd/4th rounder and call it. Maybe find a home for Krav if something makes sense(and not a rental). Team is not close enough to go all in with these rental prices.

Reactions: Go Rangers
If, and it's a big "IF", Kakko comes back and plays to form then I really don't think the Rangers should do all that much unless a good opportunity is there to get a young asset that will be with the organization for years.

And, FWIW, I haven't liked Hunt much this year at all so it pains me to say that he's been pretty decent the last two weeks in his new role. He's more positively noticeable. I think Vatrano is a good add as well.

I'd look for Drury to do a cheap upgrade at D (again, I don't love Nemeth either, but he's been better since dealing with whatever his issues were earlier this year) or a young-ish good prospect at forward for one of our good D prospects not named Scheider. He might also look to add a vet or two with some playoff miles on his skates as well.

And, finally, these Lafreniere rumors have to be pure garbage. The Rangers are not shopping their 20 year old first 1st overall in 50 years.

I’m looking at a few deals if I’m Drury

Gettinger for Radulov + 3rd

Georgiev at 50% for a 4th

2nd for McBain

Beyond that I’m looking at 1 forward to help with depth depending on the cost:
Stastny
Lehkonen
Kessel
Domi

And 1 defenseman depending on the cost
De Haan
Leddy
Zadorov

I don't consider Rakell to be a big swing, and he's certainly not worth Kravtsov/Robertson + a 2nd. Not when he would be a pure rental. I'd offer a 2nd at most, and even then I'd probably be inclined to go with Stastny, as I think he can help us more. We already got Vatrano for the RW spot.
