Has there ever been a big trade deadline addition that has actually worked out? Isn't it mostly teams with a set core adding key role players and depth that tend to win cups? I might be missing something obvious, but I can't think of anything.

Kessel is not that type of player. Kessel isn't pking. You can't just plug average players into roles they aren't built for or that fit them. This isn't the Canadian Olympic team where you can send out Richards toews and Nash as a checking line. Kessel has always been a top 6 scorer, asking him to come in here and be a bottom 6 and probably 4th liner here is just setting up for failure.

He doesn’t have to PK. Strome, Kreider, Zibanejad, Goodrow, Rooney are all regulars who already do. Do we need a team of 12 forwards who PK? Not wanting to add guys like this is how you get stuck with the black hole Third and fourth lines who can’t provide any offense which we have now. This organization and fanbase is so rigid about roles. The team doesn’t score enough at 5v5. He would help and reports are he won’t cost much. There’s basically no downside. There is no role or scenario that would make playing guys like brodzinski, mckegg, Hunt and such better than Phil Kessel. This applies to any of these trade guys discussed it doesn’t necessarily have to be Kessel. Kessel is bad defensively but I’m not super concerned with that with shesterkin in net. It’s more valuable to this team to being in guys who can provide offense and let Igor bail out the defensive lapses
