This Gettinger Gauthier talk has me eagerly waiting for Hunt, Lafreniere and Goodrow to be back in the lineup so we can stop talking about players that don't matter all that much.

You hate Gauthier. We get it. Just put it in your bio. If you cant see that Gauthier has more offensive talent than Gettinger, McKegg, etc., as well as recognizing we have a number of “grinders” in the lineup already, then lets just end the discussion right now. I am fully aware Gauthier isn’t Eric Lindros. I am fully aware he has his shortcomings. But he is a step above the other depth chart players.

Like, assume Chytil stays going, Schneider stays being a solid bottom line D at 19 yo and the Rona-protocol squad returns.

What's left to fill out to compete? One bottom-6 guy? Imo that would be it. I'm still conservative, keep assets.

I like the roster as is. When everybody gets going at the same time, watch out.

.... but f***, the Chychrun crowd is getting to me. If he's as good as advertised, he'd be a great contract, young player and stability on the LD.

They still pretty badly still need a two way middle six center, a bottom pair PMD, and still another Blais type, or at least someone willing to pretend to be a Blais type for a little while.

Jones and Lafreniere might be able to fill the last two spots internally. Hertl would be a very expensive version of the first one. I'd like someone a bit more affordable.

Schneider stabilizing the third pair and Chytil becoming a fulltime winger is where you then focus all the attention on the center ice position and adding maybe a depth D.

At center you can look at Hertl, Paveslki, and Nick Bonino as options. At D there is Giordano, Leddy, or someone else for less who is an analytic darling (Michael Kempny the year the Caps won the Cup type find).

I've been debating on the main boards with some of you and contrarian Sharks fans all day about what it would take to get Hertl and it's going to be a combo of the three out of NYR 2022 1st, NYR 2022 2nd, STL 2022 2nd, Lundkvist, Robertson, Kravstov, with Chytil, Barron, Pajuniemi, and Jones all in the "very unlikely category". I forgot Grubbe earlier but he'd be fair game.

I think the Rangers really like Jones which is why he is on the taxi squad. We will see him again soon. Schneider I think is untouchable unless it's for like a McDavid or Matthews type of player. Garrand is not in play because he's the only legit goalie prospect the Rangers have with all others as question marks. They're not going to give up any of Berrard/Cullye/Othmann for a rental, and Korzcak is the only center in the organization with any offensive upside.

The Metro is going to be a bloodbath. 1st-4th place don't really matter other than for home ice. Washington and Carolina are playoff tested. Pittsburgh has their big three and don't be shocked if MAF ends up back with them for one final run.

The Rangers are very young and have to beat 2/3 of those teams guaranteed for a shot at either Vasilevsky/Kucherov/Point and friends, or high octane Florida.

If they can survive the Metro gauntlet do they have a puncher's chance to go all the way? Sure but it is highly highly unlikely. This team needs to earn their playoff badges before going all in. They still need more fiber in their DNA which is what players like Berrard and Cullye bring. Drury knows this.

Ok but this is a salary cap world. We can argue all day about Gauthier and what is offensive talent level is, but what do you expect? This is a franchise transitioning from a rebuild to a competitive window. You were the one who said XYZ of grinders should play over Gauthier. I pushed back saying that just doesn’t make sense. And it doesn’t. Out of a group of Gettinger, Greco, McKegg, etc., Gauthier has the most upside and is the better player. Clearly the coaching staff agrees. But please lets split hairs further

That's your opinion. He has 4 goals and 16 points in 74 games with us, Greg no offense Mckegg has 11 in 62 games for us, i dont like either guy, but to pretend Gauthier has some sort of offensive game is not accurate. Mckegg atleast can penalty kill and no i dont want him either.

this has been my thinking for a long long time.
I don’t even have a problem overpaying a bit, just so long as it’s the right guy.
Not necessarily the highest profile, flashiest, big ticket Center.
But kakko/LaF are going to need to get top 6 min and hopefully 1 of them will get consistent 1PP time as well

He's a placeholder for this season and maybe next. He'll be phased out once the Cullyes/Berrards/Othmanns of the world start turning pro.

He has the size and the speed that should have defense men falling on their asses. I think he's been more noticeable out there playing for Gallant, as opposed to Quinn. Unfortunately he hasn't put it all together at this level, and if he ever does, it likely will not be with the Rangers. I hope he proves me wrong, but again, he's gonna have to start scoring some goals. You can see why someone took a chance on him in the first round.
