We aren't a Smith or a Kessel away from a cup, you're basically throwing away assets that could be used when we are ready, and neither of those guys is being aquired for what you're saying

Yes, but at what point does experiencing the playoffs for players like Lindgren, Fox, Kakko, Lafreniere, Miller, Shesterkin, Lundkvist, Chytil, Gauthier, and anyone else that hasn't been there yet outweigh the fact that we are giving up assets for when the team is ready?

One thing about the NHL that is different from other sports like baseball, football, and even basketball (look at the Suns last year): playoff experience matters. When 40% of the roster hasn't been there, it's a big deal. They need to know what that level of game is like to develop further. They need to know what it is like to play more than 82 games, to prepare for a longer season. To know what you need to do in the summer so when you play game 90 of a season that you have more in the tank.

For all the crap McKegg gets here, he played really well Wednesday night. Really well. Busted his ass on every shift.

The problem with Mckegg is the same problem that Howden had. Busting his ass all game leads to absolutely nothing. He's just kinda.. there

I think the team is doing a huge disservice to Chytil by trying to force him in to this center role. He was drafted as a winger and in my opinion looks way more comfortable and useful there.

I remember a coast to coast goal he scored a while back I think against the blackhawks and it showed him flying down the wing and using his power to come across the crease and put it in. It was a beautiful goal, and it was him playing wing when he scored it.

I know the has huge needs at center, but forcing Fil into that role is not doing him any good.

Fil himself insists he is a center. He emphasized that categorically early in the season in an interview on Ranger YT.

I think McKegg gets crap partly (mostly?) because he has a funny name. He played well in the aspects Fil needs to pick up. Busting his ass on every shift. I guess that's what Fil was put in the press box to see.

I think this team suffered a lot more from the loss of DeAngelo than it did Fast or Buchnevich. Similarly, I think our biggest weakness right now is on the backend and not up front. Generating offense in the league right now has a lot to do with having defensemen who can join, lead, and sustain the attack both on the rush and in zone. Fox is elite in this regard. Trouba is fine to good, though with his footspeed it comes with more risk. K'Andre has potential, but isn't there yet by any stretch. Nils is in a similar boat. Nemeth and Lindgren are definitely not good at this.

Rangers are currently 2nd in the Metro, 4th in the Conference. There's 33 Games to go till the deadline. If they are sitting in a similar position, March 21 2022. I would bet good money that they look to make considerable additions.

Makes no sense why they cant just promote Laf
Maybe a speed thing? With Laf in there that would be a pretty slow line but then why not promote both Laf and Chytil and demote Hunt to the third line. Maybe GG still wants Laf to show more and earn it while giving Chytil a boost after benching him...dunno.

Also, Panarin is the real center of that line. That could have something with it.

Shesty and Chytil for Newhook and Byram. Slide Laf over to center and let Strome walk in the summer, next year:
Kreider-Ziba-Kravy
Panarin-Laf-Hunt
Goodrow-Newhook-Kakko
Reeves-Rooney-Barron
Lindgren-Fox
Miller-Trouba
Byram-Lundkvist
Kinkaid
Geo

Then when Ziba get too old and slow to play center effectively you slide him over to LW with Newhook and his jets at center.

I was going to post the following yesterday and didn't, I think it's something close as I deleted it.

In my opinion, when AV got here, the Rangers were a couple of years past where they are today in the development of their draft picks and young players. That said, AV came in, and the Rangers were superbly structured, be it through luck or design. I am going with both because if it was by design you don't get rid of whom they did after 2014 and replace them with guys like Glass. Similarly, they did all 3 phases correct, drafting, FA signing and trades.

Anyway, neither here nor there, that team had defensive pairs that worked, essentially all 3 and their forward lines were fantastic, all 4 of them, especially the 3rd line, and they were freaking fast. They were good by any metric, specifically advanced stats. 2014 was the nadir of AV, his teams were never as good as that team in my opinion, even though they won the President's cup the next year. There were too many personnel downgrades. That's not what I am trying to debate, although I do believe if they made better decisions in 14' that in 15-17 they would have made another final.

To bring it into what we have today. The team isn't structured correctly yet, and certainly not like 2014. However, the bones are there for an excellent forward group with a few substitutions. On the back end, I think this team will be much better off than what they had in 2014 to deal with the rigors of the modern NHL. Again, all that is needed is time and or a correct evaluation or decision or two to set the defense up for the future. Goalie, Igor is great when he's healthy, does he have the constitution to be healthy enough for a playoff run, when the games get tighter, tougher and certainly fewer days off. One thing with Hank, he was rarely injured. This team isn't an advanced stats darling like back then, can it be? I am not sure as presently constituted.

Anyway, to tie this thesis together. I don't think the team is as far off from being a true contender. I think organically, many of the players needed to progress to being a top tier contending team are present. Obvious needs to me are, more speed they just play slow at times, a center or two, preferrably one to at least play the heavy game and be competent on face offs, a better 3rd pairing. They also need to spend more time in the other team's end and shoot more. I think that the last 2 coaches for some reason thought that getting the perfect pass rather than shooting more was the means to an end.

What I am happy with is I think this team is on the right tack, for some reason I think they are improving. With a few correct decisions, they can be really good.

That's my 2 sense, if you want change too bad.

It could be mitigated by replacing Nemeth with Jones. But that's clearly not in the interest of Drury and I wonder if DeAngelo would still be on this team even if he had played out the last season with us. I wouldn't be surprised if he would've been traded during the summer anyway.

Why not sign Anisimov? I tbink he could be good for a 3c and allow Chytil to slide to RW.

he is still decently productive and defensively reaponisble.

to me its a low risk move. Worst comes to worst u can just keep him as a 13f instead of Mckegg
I love Arty, but he's cooked. I kindly pass.

Goodrow as the long term 3C for this team made way too much sense for me from the beginning anyways
It really didn’t, but I am sure people besides you will tell themselves that to try and justify his being the worst contract on the team right now.
