That's also because we haven't shared a division with an original six team since, I think, 1971.
Understood, but if you put us in a division with three other O6 teams we wouldn't suddenly have three strong rivals, just like that. You seemed to imply that Detroit playing with three other O6 teams meant that they had some sort of natural rivalry with those teams.

I don't really care about Detroit or their rivalries or their travel or whatever. I'm just not a fan of the Original Six Rivals angle that the NHL shoves down our throat.

I think there's a big difference though between those. Detroit v Colorado is less than 25 years old. Cowboys v Giants has like 60 years of consistent history. Red Wings v Hawks would be the only rivalry that really matters for those teams. 828 meetings........ that's a rivalry. Avalanche can spark a rivalry with, I don't know, the Coyotes. And we can meet back up and see if it still matters in 30 years.

But part of that rivalry is because Detroit and Chicago have a long standing rivalry in general. It's not just down to the sport. Same with NY and Boston and NY and Philly and Toronto and Montreal.

Like what about that Panthers and Lightning Rivalry? What rivalry? Oh. Yea. Because people in TB don't really hate on people in Miami and vice versa. They are kind of budds.

yes, Chicago is the big one. St Louis was big too. Still not sure about Minny now that they aren’t the Stars.

No, the rivalries aren’t the end all yet i don’t see a Detroit vs Chicago or Colorado in the East. Too much history between Det and Chi imo.

Detroit vs Colorado was entirely a result of the playoffs though and had already fallen off before Detroit moved East. I think Tampa/Carolina has the makings of a similar thing if they can meet in the conference final a couple of times. Pittsburgh/Washington isn’t going to be the same rivalry in a few years that it was at the height of those teams. I do think rivalries are a little harder to generate in a parity-driven league, though

It does suck that we lost the Detroit/Chicago rivalry.

So for 19 years fans suffer?

The NHL is barely on the map. They need all the rivalries they can get right now.

In 30 years, when MLS surpasses the NHL, it might not matter....

But really, the problem with hockey is cost. You can't have a perfect sheet of ice everywhere for cheap. The equipment is insanely expensive. It just isn't the most accessible sport. It's why Polo never took off........ ok there are other reasons polo never took off. But still. Like Nascar might have the same problem, except everyone drives in the US and everyone, (hyperbole) has a car, so they can relate. How many Floridians go ice skating .... ever? Like even once in their life? There are real reasons that hockey is so popular in northern climes. In both North America and Eurasia. And there are reasons why soccer and basketball are popular like, almost everywhere, because you can play them pretty much everywhere for nothing.

Was just looking at stats between Barzal and Zibby. Zibby outscored him this year by 5 points and 6 goals in a year when he had COVID and was the walking dead half the games. This guy has improved every single year as a ranger and joined Gaborik and Nash in the 40 goal club. I’d resign this kid for $9M easy.

For the life of me I will never understand why they let the Northstars move to Dallas. I still find it troubling. NHL should have said no way and just offered an expansion or something. Was so stupid. And then Dallas basically kept the name, but they had to remove the "North" part of it, and they got soooo lucky that Texas Rangers badge and Tejanos use a Star as their symbol. SO lucky, otherwise it really wouldn't make any sense.

Wild's not a bad name. But it just, I don't know, doesn't have the class of the Northstars. Sounds more like a college team or your drunken coworkers fantasy team.

You can't compare them because Barzal does whatever it takes to win, including sacrificing his own offensive stats when necessary. He would probably be scoring an extra 20 points if he just focused on himself and offense. Not to mention the drastically different play styles between the teams and the relative lack of offensive talent Barzal has around him. Please. I would trade Zibby for Barzal right now in a heart beat. And I say that as a lifelong Rangers fan.

Carolina is kinda like (was) Hartford. It’s like they’re tough to hate but they can be a pain in the @SS. Tampa is riding high while i think Miami is looking for a fight. They have a making of good rivalries down South.

And this is bullshit. The NHL might be the 4th of 4 big sports in the US, but it’s still a $5B business that draws millions upon millions of viewers.

the operating income for these teams is low. The following isn’t too high in way to many markets.

He’s 28. Panarin is 29. We need vets too.

Question is will we be able to afford those vets if we eventually have to pay all our young players what they will hopefully be worth? And in that, I don't see Zibanijad here for more than maybe 3-4 years if he does extend and I don't see Panarin re-signing in 2026 when his contract is up. But itl be nice while we have them.

doesn’t stick for me much like the NFL Texans have never stuck with me to replace the Oilers.

The NBA has SO many bad ones. The Pelicans? The Nuggets? The F'n Lakers are lucky they've won like 20 titles because there ain't a lake in sight of LA. Washington Wizards? Why, cause Bullets were WAY too real ? The Utah Jazz? I mean, they could have probably sold that name to New Orleans and changed theirs to Utah Saltyboys or something. Or Utah Religious Fanatics. lol

And I get why they changed the Redskins name, but ugh.... it's kind of the end of an era. I don't have to like it. They just should have changed their logo to some fat guy painted red. Ohh look, that's what we mean by redskin.

The worst though has to be the LA Angels of Anaheim...... like wtf? I actually don't mind the Ducks. It's stupid. But then, the team is based off a Disney movie. So it kind of is perfect for Anaheim.

And then there are so many teams in the world named "Red Bulls"...... including the MLS team I hate the most. There's like 4 Red Bull teams in Europe in various soccer and basketball leagues. I don't know how that happened. And why aren't there more teams named Cocacolas and Pepsis? Way more popular.

don’t forget the Hess, i mean NY Jets. Lot of Green Airliners flying around in the skies today lol. Would think after this long they would change their uniform colors more silver like an actual Jet and maybe keep a green stripe. The stadium theme should be Top Gun imo rather than this football with laces which are supposed to be teeth.

If the contract takes him to 34 I’m for it.

That's really the only way I am ok with extending him. He's not likely to miss less games as he gets older. So it's almost a matter of when and not if he will have another extended injury. I think that would also align with when Austin Matthews would become a UFA. In fact, if they aligned Zibs contract to end the year Matthews becomes a UFA also, that would be perfect. Because if he doesn't stay in Toronto, the Rangers probably have the next best chance to land him and then we would have the money and cap space. Not that I think he's going to leave the Leafs. I am sure they wish they never signed Tavares and dream of the day his contract runs out.

Red Bull (the drink brand) owns and sponsors a staggering number of sports teams and sporting events. Crazy that became their big marketing angle, but it did and it worked.

You know, I never considered that, but it's spot on. Air Limerick, out of Ireland, literally the only one I can think of. You know, I don't know much about the Jets origins though, is that how they got the name? Because of the airport? And did Hess pick the colors because all his trucks and gas stations were green? That would make so much sense.
