"The last thing we need to draft are LWs." Says the fan base who said the same thing about centers two years ago.

In 2018, we were unsure how to work Andersson, Chytil and Howden into a lineup that already included Zibanejad and Hayes.

In 2019, we traded for Trouba and Fox with ADA, Lundkvist and Keane in the system.

In 2020, we'll draft Lafreniere with Kreider and Panarin in the system.

And like the scenarios that pre-date that move, it will work itself out.

Yep. Organizational strength can change to a weakness very quickly once players start moving around and kids start getting a couple years into their pro careers. Never a bad thing to have good players in the pipeline even if your NHL roster at that particular position reads like an all star roster.

True, but the focus should be on the holes they already have. Not saying they shouldn't draft a LW anywhere later in this draft.

With the exception of a guy like Lafreniere the draft isn't a place to address weaknesses on your pro roster. Most of these kids are 2-3 years away from playing in the NHL at least, let alone filling holes there. I'm a firm believer in filling your prospect pool with the best players you possibly can. Balance is important there of course but you can always trade from a post of strength to fill a need.

You just don't pass on a franchise player and a clear number one pick to take players based on need.

Your need will change. The talent of the franchise player will not.

This funadmental principle is particularly important when you're sitting at the top of the hill. It's a different landscape than picking 10th, 9th, or even 6th.

Center depth remains the most overrated aspect of a strong team.

Vegas is probably the favorite to come out of the west, they don't have a single center who broke 50 points.

You know what they do have? Some f***ing awesome depth at wing. Smith, JAM, Patches, Stone, Tuch, etc. Thats not a template that is too far off from what we have brewing here, and we have the "true #1 C" that they don't.

I want to upgrade on Strome not because I don't think he's not good enough to hold his own as a 2C, but because he's not multi dimensional enough to really justify keeping beyond a 1 year QO. The diversity in skill sets amongst our forwards is where we're truly lacking, but that needs to be addressed below the top 6 more than it does in the top 6 (where I would imagine they will do some work as well and I feel that Buchnevich's days as a Ranger are up because of it.)

Get me a solid 30 point scoring C who can PK and plays with a little bit of bite that I can throw on the 3rd line and another strong defensive PK centric one for the 4th (who shifts Howden to the wing, since there is no way he is going anywhere) and I'm ready to move forward with our offense for next year, even with Strome and his limitations at 2c.

+1 for Joe Thornton.

The element of surprise offense where laf basically weaves his way through the opponent and waits a minute for Thornton to get up ice before dishing him an easy tap in?

I'm here for it.

But for real, Nashville has a few guys in Bonino and Jarnkrok who I'd love to poach and thats a team that will almost definitely be looking to re shuffle the deck a bit. They have several guys actually.

Hold on, I NEVER said not to pick Lafreniere. If you look at my response to the poster who said we had no LW depth, I listed Lafreniere as part of the Rangers depth. Panarin, Kreider, Lafreniere, Lemiuex. Now fill holes with trades/draft and don't immediately worry about LW.

Things happen. The Jets’ entire defense was decimated in like a week. Maybe some dingbat like Tkachuk ruins Panarin’s ankle. Maybe Kreider’s play falls off a cliff. Maybe Lafreniere busts. Maybe Lemieux just isn’t that good. And remember, the Rangers organization is actually two teams not one.

Edit: literally as I type this Svechnikov falls awkwardly and his ankle points in a direction an ankle should never point, and he’s walked off the ice.

You realize these “maybe’s” could happen to any position? Otherwise try finding a team that has two LWs in the middle of their prime on Panarin and Kreider level for another 3-4 years at least and a prime prospect like AL.

Everyone knows I was uncomfortable as anyone with the Kreider talks. But the contract did end up being more reasonable than I originally worried it would be.

On top of that, I can't help but think that Kreider is both moveable, and capable of playing a third line role if the offense starts to dwindle with age.

Yeah, maybe the 2024 version of Kreider is more like a 20 goal, 40 point player. But if that's behind Panarin and Lafreniere on a third line, I can potentially live with that.

Important thing to remember is Vegas has no Cap.

Carolina Pick - Vegas has no 1st
Georgiev - Lehrer is UFA
DeAngelo - they don’t have a player like that, especially on the right.

Stasnty - middle six vet C Rangers don’t need to protect. Great as faceoffs; not sure if he still PKs though
Martinez - veteran stopgap. Cup experience (unfortunately) can play with Trouba. Don’t need to protect for exp draft.
Cap Space - 10m for one year for those two. Comes off when all the other Rangers dead weight comes of to create money for Zibanejad extension.
Krebs - not sure Vegas includes him; not sure they have to, but gives Rangers an asset for taking the $ and still on team when the other guys walk. Would be a nice get.

I think that is the kind of love staring the Rangers in the face

You mean "no tax"?

Strome being a controlled asset for at least one more year is the key. Allows a team at least a year to see how Chytil and Howden improve by then. Even if a stop gap is needed then it would likely be just for another year and maybe as a defensive and somewhat versatile 4C rather than 3C

Isn’t 2024-25 just a year short of when his contract becomes movable?

If I’m Gorton, I’m looking very hard down the road a year while I formulate this years plan and working backwards.

One year from now;
Expansion draft
Strome likely UFA (may not be a bad thing)
Lundkvist arrives
Miller arrives (if he is not here already)
Lundqvist, Staal, Smith and the bulk of Shattenkirk’s buyout off the cap.

So the way I see it...

One of the three wise men will have to retire, be bought out or be traded. The Rangers need the money to resign Fast and prop up the left defense. Once the decision is made on how to proceed in goal, the other decisions will be easier to make.

Strome gets a one year contract (likely) unless he is willing to take 2-3 years at a discounted price. If he gets a multi year contract, he could always be exposed in the expansion draft if he shits in the bed next year.

The Rangers would be wise to get a potential Strome replacement into the system. Most likely a young veteran, perhaps an 2018 or 2019 draft pick from another team. At some point they are going to need another middle six (or better) center.

If Lundkvist is indeed judged ready to step right into the lineup next year that begs the question what to do with DeAngelo. If there is value available, he could be traded this summer. He may be at the top of his value. There’s also no harm keeping him and seeing how next year plays out. If he is traded this summer, the Rangers could be in the market for a one year stop gap on the right side (Kevin Shattenkirk? Alec Martinez?) Many others available

All other decisions fall out of these plans. If Lundqvist is staying next year, Georgiev will be used to acquire a developing center or draft capital.

There are dozens of UFA defensemen available this summer. Someone who can pair with Trouba is a priority. A third pair righty could also be on the docket.

Finally, I’d like to see the Rangers find a Brian Boyle type to kill penalties, take face offs and sit in the press box when appropriate. Hey, here’s a thought...what about Brian Boyle?

I believe so, yes.

Strangely, I just don't have a sense it's going to be an issue one way or another.

IMHO, the only issue could be AL 2nd contract starting in 2024-25 on top of all other increases that could be expected to be needed by then. But for only one-year it would be doable.

Truth be told, just getting Lundqvist, Staal, Smith, etc. off the books will be huge.

Yes, a lot of that gets gobbled up by younger guys getting raises, but that's not a small chunk of change.

My question is what can we get for Georgiev. Who is going to be in desperate need of a goalie? Toronto is one team I keep looking to. Who else? And what can we get? 2nd round pick? 2nd-3rd line tweener? San Jose? Lebanc is someone I’d love to add to this roster.
Bruins ?
