I know value depends on the market, but in a vacuum, Georgiev should be worth more than Talbot based on their contract situation

No he shouldnt...Talbot when he was traded was on a roll and had a sample size big enough that teams thought they could count on him being a #1, in hindsight he wasnt the same since leaving Allaire but his value was better than Georgiev at the time

Staal's buyout has a minimal (under $1.1MM) impact which would extend only one year after. Combine that with the fact that his replacement will presumably be a rookie on his ELC (given Miller's play in coronacamp we may have already seen who it is) and that move works just fine under the flat cap.

Just let the contracts expire. No need of kicking the can down the road, its what's best for the franchise long term especially with the cap being flat. Losing a guy like Fast sucks but it won't change the direction of the team. Imo we already have the players in waiting to replace him. Ie Kakko, Kravtsov, Gauthier.

Talbot was a pending UFA on a 1-year deal, Georgiev has 3 RFA years left. That impacts the value in a vacuum.

Talbot was considered #1 goalie ready, nobody has concluded that with Georgiev, to me he looks like an excellent option as your 2nd goalie.

You are not reading what I am saying. I was only talking about their contract situation. I literally said "in a vacuum", twice.

Talbot was way better both in the AHL and in the NHL than Georgiev. Talbot was also coming off that stretch where he filled in as the #1 and looked great. Georgiev has age on his side, but not performance.
Talbot played behind a far better defense in New York. And after getting off to a rough start in Hartford, Georgiev had an excellent run before he was called up. Georgiev also has excellent advanced stats (not that I care)

The market and contract situation will impact the return more than the performance IMO. Talbot could have returned more in 2015 if there weren't younger backups available in Jones and Lehner.

What other goalies in their 20s are on the market this off-season?

Well, let's check this out. Goalies who are RFA/UFA this off-season and are between the ages of 20-29 and with at least 10 NHL GP this past season:

RFA:
Blackwood (NJD) - 23
Murray (PIT) - 26
Georgiev (NYR) - 24
Ullmark (BUF) - 26
Jarry (PIT) - 25
Subban (CHI) - 26
Montembeault (FLA) - 23
Hill (ARI) - 24

UFA:
Brossoit (WPG) - 27
Domingue (VAN) - 28

Although, "on the market" probably isn't a great way to describe most of Georgiev's comparable RFA's this off season. They're on the market if the team wants them to be.

I don't think Blackwood and Jarry are available. Of the remaining goalies, who would you take over Georgiev? Maybe Ullmark? Only 1 RFA year left though

Yeah I didn't consider availability, I just put "free agent" and age parameters into CapFriendly and hit 'enter' lol.

As for the second part, yeah there is really no one on that list that screams "oh yeah I'd take that player over Georgiev" other than Blackwood. And he's not going to be available.

That's a good sign for a potential return (If Gorton is willing to trade Georgiev). Completely different scenario from 2015 with Talbot

Talbot actually played fewer games than Georgiev, yes he had better stats, but that is to be expected because Georgiev was much younger and Talbot played for a Cup contending team. Georgiev's ceiling is considered higher.

I read it but the fact remains we won't get more than what we got for Talbot in a trade for Georgiev alone, which is the actual topic here.

*samuel jackson voice* It was not.

That all depends on the market. And if Georgiev is indeed on the block, this year's off season is a better market for sellers than 2015. Georgiev with 3 RFA years left, and maybe Murray and Ullmark to compete with, he could be the most valuable backup available, unlike Talbot in 2015.

It's about more than just Talbot's and Georgiev's performance
