If we were to trade Kreider this off season would we get positive value like a pick or prospect or would we need to pay for another team to take him by adding a pick or prospect?

The flat cap factors in. If we could get assets then a good signing right?

Aside from all the pushback you're already getting... that the Rangers wouldn't consider trading him... it's pretty standard practice for NMCs to go into effect when the extension is signed, rather than when the contract goes into effect on July 1 in a typical year. This is for UFA contracts only, obviously. It's different when there are RFA years. In other words, I'm pretty sure the NMC is already in effect. Players want it for this exact reason.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, of course... I just seem to remember seeing that several times.

since my long HF Hiatus I've stayed away almost completely from the main boards, but mother of god the trades board is still as bad as I remember.
I think it has gotten significantly worse recently because everyone views themselves as capologists that can accurately valuate contracts in trades

I appreciate the insight. I don’t want to move Kreider. I come to these boards for info from the more experienced people who I have been reading here for many years. I just wanted to understand better if Kreiders salary became onerous since the cap will stagnate. The cap seemed to be on an ever onward trajectory but will clearly plateau for the foreseeable future. All teams will need to deal with cap problems but we have a lot of talented young players to think about and just wanted to know if we will get locked up or if we will have flexibility in the coming years.

Kreider isn't going to get traded a few months after he signed an extension. The optics of that would be horrible.

I wouldn't pencil him in next to Zibanejad though.
Oh, I think that is exactly where the season commences. I understand the desire to insert our presumptive #1 pick into the top-6, but the reality is that he is going to spend a good amount of time behind Panarin and Kreider.

All the other top picks typically start on the 3rd line to give them a taste of the play. Let him get that treatment for 10-20 games. See where he is an if it's ideal to move him into the top 6. We don't have to rush him.

It's really not as hard as you're making it out to be. You honestly don't know who he is saying doesn't have a GM job in his future?
I take it back. It was the clearest communication in the history of communications. It was a beautiful, genius communication!

You know I was thinking about Matheson for awhile when it came to the Rangers. He signed until 2025-2026 at 4.875 a year. NTC doesn't kick in until the year after next, still young at 26. Of course unless ADA is dealt then we have an issue with protection.

Just curious what everyone's thoughts are on him--I know he was hurt this year but it looked like he was starting to come into his own before that.

I'm not saying ADA for him but maybe Buch and a small add. Florida I believe doesn't have cap space issues but maybe looking to skate things up.

Supposedly the Rangers were talking to the Panthers about Skjei before he went to Carolina, but the sticking point was that Tallon wanted us to take Matheson back in the deal. At least I recall hearing/reading that somewhere. I think it was LeBrun.

As far as Matheson goes, I think he's a better player than he's shown the last couple years in Florida. I don't think he's entirely dissimilar to someone like Lindholm in that regard -- though Lindholm was a better player at the time he was traded. However, I don't think we're in any position to take on a nearly $5m reclamation project. Especially one that impacts our protection slots and is locked in for 6 more years. Now of course we could just expose Matheson and not care but if Seattle doesn't take him that's a lot of room to spend on a guy who looks like an anchor if he doesn't find his game again. You could try and incentivize them to take him but I'd rather not go down that path. It didn't really work out so well for anyone who did that with Vegas.

He's the guy you swap with another struggling player on a rough contract, a la Neal for Lucic. Not someone you actively seek out as part of a trade.

You only say that because he has just had the best year offensively of any Ranger defenesmen since the days of Leetch and Zubov.
It's not only that
The year before too was very good PLUS the organization poured a lot of attention and focus on setting him straight to be the player he could be.
And even if what you said was true then still OF COURSE ges a top 4 scoring defensemen lol so what's your point?

Not if
Lundkvist is for real
Fox can handle 1st PP next yr
They get a top 4 LD back
Right but we dont know what Nils is
We know TDA is elite and possibly will get better
I think hes only scratched the surface of his potential...dudes only 24/25
If trouba wasn't signed I'm sure most if not all would be shouting SIGN HIM YESTERDAY

I don't even know if this is true.

Kreider spent a good deal of time with Chytil and Buchnevich last year. Some of that (okay most of that) was due to Zibanejad being out injured, but they weren't attached at the hip even when the season started (Quinn loaded up a single line.) Kreider and Zibanejad played together a ton the season before but were separated when the season started.

Not too mention that K-C-B was an excellent line when they were together. They actually out performed every other line combination that the Rangers put out there (smallish sample size, but still.)

I know that there is this whole "OHHHH KIDS GOTTA EARN THEIR WAY DURR!" mentality here and its true to some extent, but not giving your best goalscorer a true playmaker to play with at ES is kind of doing him a massive disservice. Not to mention you're going to fatten up the top 6 again which is the opposite of what this team should be trying to do.

But we're both getting way ahead of ourselves, we don't know what this roster is going to look like or who is going to play where when ever the season starts again.

We will have flexibility next year, but this year is going to be difficult. Kreider's contract was mostly offset by trading Skjei, so from that perspective, isn't an issue. To be honest, winning 1st overall created the real cap issue for us. Laf will get max bonuses. He will almost certainly be on the team, and we are already using up the bonus cushion without him. I'll spare you all the details, as I'm on my phone, but the bottom line is that Laf will cost us 3.775 mil against the cap. We very likely will have to trade one of Strome or ADA unless they both agree to sign for much less than market value.

Other teams couos say it’s 1 yr and he needs to do it again. I kinda get that thinking as NYR May be selling high

My predictions

1) Strome and Ada sign 3 year deals, neither of them are rangers at the end of those.
2) Krieder moves to Rw to facilitate Lafrenierre to the lw on Zibs line when he is ready.
3) Buch is moved after #2
4) We draft a center or LD with our other 1st.
5) Lundqvist accepts a trade to a contender.
6)Staal and Smith are still on the team, Staal plays a lot less this year with Hajek and Miller taking his spot from time to time, their contracts run out and Smith signs somewhere else while Staal retires or moves to Minnesota.
7) Morgan Barron makes this team out of camp.
8) We make playoffs this year, don't become contenders for the cup for 2.

Absolutely not. Mike Matheson is not a good NHL player. And definitely NOT for Buchnevich.
