Other interesting tidbits in Carp's article this AM:

Unless my definition of a "whopper" is different from his, I'm not sure that's what it'll take to move Georgiev, and that third point in particular reads like Carp speculating, but the bit about Drury being given permission to interview for the FLA job is new to me – not sure if I'd read it anywhere before.

Other than the thread on this very board.

I enjoy Vince's stuff but he's starting to rival Larry in his off-the-wall trade proposals. DeAngelo, Lias, and the Canes 1st for Cirelli? Yikes. The Legend of Cirelli is getting way out of hand.
I dont think thats a laughable proposal at all. RFA + Disgruntled prospect + 1st for a better RFA that fills a positional need and isn’t even in his prime yet. Im not crazy about Cirelli but I’d probably be okay with that deal.

Would definitely rather have Lindholm if possible.

I do think the Rangers are a Lafreniere (needs to be included here too), Stastny and Martinez away from contending. Getting the first overall pick changes the timeline a bit. The Rangers have two Hart caliber players in Zibanejad and Panarin. A full season of Igor, and there is no reason Igor can’t do what Carter Hart is doing.

Rangers are weakest at secondary scoring, (helped by Lafreniere, season 2 Kakko and Stastny), face offs (Stastny), PK (also Stastny) and getting a better for Trouba (Martinez). Also with Hank likely leaving, they are going to need some leadership (Stastny & Martinez) and it wouldn’t hurt if they could get some former cup winner(s) (Martinez, and would also look at the cost for Bonino who would help with what Stastny does as well) To fill that void.

The East is weak, there isn’t a Colorado or Vegas like team. If Igor gets hot they can make some things happen. I think the biggest mistake that the Rangers could make is to take a step back by trying to fill too many holes with youth that isn’t ready, and may never contribute. The last thing they need is to risk regression, especially with Trouba. We saw this happen to Roszival. 2021 is when things should bust wide open, but need to make sure there is a good development year now and that we aren’t compromising cap space for that summer.

I'd temper the expectations on Laf a little bit, he's going to be 19 years old coming into the league during a global pandemic, it will be an even larger adjustment than rookies normally face.
I'm not denying that Stastny and Martinez could help, I just don't see why you throw in your best trade chip (and the best player in the trade by a long shot) for two 33/34 year old UFA's to-be who will take up $10m in cap space.
Take a year, let the kids grow and settle in, you can find Stastny and Martinez level guys every year for picks and B prospects, or even at next years deadline if we look close to contending. Players like ADA are much harder to find.

This is why Tampa won't move Cirelli. Everyone falls over themselves trying to help out the lightning. "Cap issues? Well I have this 1st rounder just lying around. You can have it." Someone will step up and take on their problems. It's like the penguins. The whole league has a subconscious compulsion to help certain teams win.

That Vince article reads like he browsed here for names and then just totally took a guess on value looking at capfriendly.

Rick's article he posted this morning says that when the Rangers sign Strome and Tony to one year deals, they'll both be UFA's the following season and traded at next deadline for picks.....

You'd think he'd send this shit over to Shayna to proofread before hitting submit. But that's the Rick Carpinello difference the Athletic is paying for
Carp sucks, flat out. I subscribe to the Athletic because the rest of their hockey coverage is awesome and Shayna is great but Carp just sucks.

That 1st and 3rd point are kind of hypocritical. The Rangers will buy out Hank if he doesn't retire but don't want to buy out Staal and Smith - who make more combined than Hank - because they don't want the dead space the extra year? But they'll do it for Hank?

Am I the only one who thinks it would be foolish not to trade Georgiev this offseason, regardless of whatever happens with Hank? His value will never be higher, Shesty is our guy. If AG and Igor are platooning next year then something went wrong IMO. That shouldn't be the plan. Yet I keep seeing Carp talking about the Rangers having a talented young tandem. Idk if I'm missing something but I see Superstar with Igor and low level starter, decent platoon guy with Georgiev - not sure why Carp talks about them like they're the same thing. I like Georgie, but he has the most value to us as a trade piece right now.

+ 1

The Mets are the go to team to bail out MLB teams.

“You mean, we can have Robinson Cano for only the cost of an 18 yr old prospect and others? Hell yeah!!!”

I think its more that those teams are built up with so many assets that they wind up in a position to continue dealing from positions of strength and finding ways to make the money work because of it.

That's hopefully the kind of system Gorton and JD are trying to build here. Even when the cap forces you to move assets, those assets are expendable, yet still valuable enough to replenish the system with what you lost.

You know, there keeps being talk about the Rangers demanding a big return for Georgiev and I just don't see it.

Not that they're going to give him away, but I don't know what some people are thinking Georgiev's value around the league is. Especially if Shesterkin takes the lion's share of starts next sesaon.

This is why people feel the Rangers get cheated when the actual trades go down. Because the hype on a potential return gets blown out of a propotion and reality feels deflating.

Yep.

If he brings back a mid-high 2nd rounder, I'm happy.

I think this stems from the fact that the Rangers pretty much made it known if a team wanted Georgiev they were gonna have to pay to get him.

If the rumors are true that Gorton was asking for a top 6 NHL forward in return for Georgiev, that pretty much signals they don't want to move him.

Because no team is trading that for a guy who *might* be an NHL starter. Just not happening.

But I agree with you, I would have been moved Georgiev by now. He's nothing special by any means

Tampa couldn't even afford that. Do any of these reporters do a bit of research?

Do you think it could be more a function of not wanting to move him? Setting a high, almost unachievable bar which has the side benefit of them not outright saying/indicating that they are 100% getting Hank off the roster. Maybe out of respect for him.

Good chance I am reading too much into this.

I'd hardly say Cirelli is a better player than DeAngelo. He's a great defensive player who is skilled enough to play with high-end forwards but he's not Patrice Bergeron. DeAngelo was top-5 amongst D-men in points this season. That's a rare commodity.
