A. Which other GM said this? There are many of us, not just a few, many of us who wanted a different player at that spot and lo and behold, the player we wanted has turned out better.

Does that make us savants worthy of a scouting job? No, but it does mean the Rangers were off on that one. Shit happens, people miss on players all the time, they're human, which means that they can, and sometimes, are wrong.

B. This organization is hopelessly devoted to Staal. They moved a superior player to forward for most of the season just so that there was a spot for him to play. They continued to send him out there no matter how bad he was. I haven't seen him called out once for his performance outside of being benched for 3 games (which really looked like a move to try and wake the team up more than it was about sitting a player who doesn't deserve to play.)

C. My opinion is backed up with a ton of evidence. Its not like I want the player to suck, I would much rather him be as good as you and the front office/coaching staff think that he is.

Goawaystaal, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Everything Tony D said about Howden is true. However, while the things he listed are what make Howden a good teammate, they're not what necessarily translates to on ice results.

He's a hard worker and he tries to play the right way and he seems to be willing to do whatever he needs to do. But you can't ignore the lack of growth at the NHL level in his time as a pro. Nobody is expecting him to be a selke level center right away but the kid still seems lost most of the time out there. Sure, he's trying hard and as a teammate you always want guys by your side who you know are doing everything the right way and trying 110% at all times. But that doesn't mean criticism of his game isn't valid.

It's also why GMs need to look at things from a different angle than players and coaches. Evaluation with different points of view is very important.

Yes to both, especially number 2. There is nothing a hockey player values more in a teammate than them being hard workers. It's so baked in to hockey culture that players will overlook objectively bad on ice results and will focus on work ethic and toughness. Not that there's anything wrong with weighing those things heavily, don't get me wrong. It just is a blindspot players often have in their analysis.

It's complicated when it comes to players being able to be objective about their teammates. It's why players don't make roster and coaching decisions - for good reason.

I’m as frustrated with him as many yet that’s quite an endorsement while the coach keeps putting him out there.

With all due respect to DeAngelo, I don't think people have "zero" idea what they are talking about, but maybe they do not have the entire picture.

That being said it's obvious, with or without knowing what you are talking about, that there is not really any data that suggests Howden is very good. Hardworking, likable, and playing both ends of the ice is great, if it nets positive results, but I don't know by what measurement Howden gets you positive results.

He is still young, so there's that.

It's become increasingly obvious over the years that people involved in the game, from the front office down to the players, have a different set of values that large segments of the fandom don't share. Whether you think these people involved in the game are wrong or not is another story.

People truly think they know more than a professional coach does. These people can't even tape a stick blade but they try to evaluate a player. A young player at that. Hilarious

well, he has a much longer leash than one Dave Gettleman has with the Giants fans. That clown has made moves we all hate, all questioned and all have turned out to be correct so far.

Hoping Howden takes the next step b/c that would be huge if he’s the answer for #2 Center.

At this point, I'll be thrilled if hes the answer for #4C

Columbus was 33-22-15, so essentially a team with a losing record (33-37). I don't think they underperformed. At all.
And the funny thing is, that series is different with a few bounces. People try to make themselves feel better about 14 against LA try that every game was close, OT, blah blah blah but Columbus had almost the same series but Torts sucks and his style can never win and he's a choker. Lol this fanbase

I'd take Torts > Quinn any freaking day of the week. For the press conferences alone.

I'm not sure I'd say that he can't win. But the fact that he hasn't won (4 playoff series wins in 15 years) is suggestive of something, right?

Not sure and i don't really care tbh but people act like he's the worst coach to ever exist.
